From the beginning of this blog until this current writing I have gone through a food philosophy journey. Meat eater, lacto-ovo vegetarian, vegan, lacto-vegetarian, chronic fast-er etc. One might think I have culinary schizophrenia, and perhaps I do (but I'd prefer to be called sophisticatedly open minded).
In truth, I loved most my vegan adventure for reasons too personal for a public blog. But I don't think I could ever be vegan again, just like I'll never be 27 again, but shoot it was fun while it lasted.
After reading a very enlightening book Intuitive Eating just shortly before I became pregnant, I realized that I didn't need to be a labeled eater, just a happy one. Intuitive Eating is all about natural processes that emulate the finickiness in children (which we try to force out with our insistence at the dinner table, the "two more bites" syndrome). Anyway, after I read this book I prayed to know if it was true, then I decided to live by it's teachings (why not? It worked with the Book of Mormon).
Intuitive Eating was a process I needed to learn before my pregnancy because suddenly I was craving food that I once abhorred. Like ice cream. And cold cereal. And if I didn't know that it was acceptable to give my body what it wanted then I'd be really miserable, whereas now I'm almost-tolerably miserable (mixed with a heap of grateful).
With this new pregnancy palate I feel so uneducated. Having shunned 75% of the food available to me for one reason (not organic) or another (too acidic) I feel like I've missed out on experimentation. I am hoping that if I list some of the foods that I've considered recently there will be someone out there who can enlighten me about brands, textures, tastes and temperatures. Or whatever.
My recent conversions:
Fruit snacks -because I now need to be able to make it to Sunday School at church (I am the new lucky 14-15 year-old teacher) and I see that it is all the rage with kids these days. Cheerios are so yesteryear. Hold the fructose corn syrup. I'd like mine really juicy.
Granola Bars -for when I get sick in the night. I prefer mine with peanuts or peanut butter, but hate the acid-in-the-mouth tastes of Quaker. Actually, I think the Quaker bars are crap. And, I will take that to my grave. The Kashi ones are too grainy for three am. I am looking for more of a smooth sensation. Don't fail me.
Cold Cereal -I love Oh's. Oh my argyle socks do I love Oh's! But besides the fact that they are hard to find, the crunchiness chews up my mouth with every bowl full. I hate tender-in-the-mouth. Again, I like anything peanut butter-ish. For the fiber (I heart regularity) I can eat a shredded-wheat type cereal as long as it doesn't taste like barn.
Artisian Bread -it was always about the honey whole wheat, but now I've found that a love exists between me and a crusty baguette. I need to know what I've been missing here.
Rich Desserts -tell me more. I've been so cruel to myself.
Ice Cream -I found that an occasional ice cream cone will subdue my sicky. On a hot tip from my Mother-in-Law Honey I tried the creaminess of the Arctic Circle. It was good unto me. One time I even had them dip it in that waxy chocolate! Where else might I try?
Sour Candy - I've dabbled in Warheads and experimented with Sour Patch Kids. I can handle the hard core, so don't waste my time with Lemonheads.
If you belong to any of these culinary clubs would you so kindly take time to give a gal a suggestion or two? And if you can't, will you call your mom and see if she can help? And also, if you just read this list and are worried about my health, please know that I only eat these foods in moderation. Most of the time I eat ice.

Cold cereal is always fabulous. Shredded Wheat is good with or without milk. Along with Granola Bars, you should try Cereal Bars. The yogurt bars aren't bad either, and they actually have a decent nutrition count on them. Beware of the Fruit Snacks. Many of them are just sugary and not really healthy. Check the label.
Here's another one that might sound kind of weird. Frozen veggies. Like a bag of peas or corn. The texture with them is nice because sometimes (especially when i'm pregnant) mushy foods just make me squeemish.
I have had to find these kinds of foods because my girls just don't eat "meals" and "two more bites". They eat randomly -- a yogurt here, a banana there, etc. But I've read so many of the Nutrition labels trying to find Vitamins and Less Sugary products.
We just aren't the traditional here-are-the-food-groups-now-eat-them-all-at-one-sitting-three-times-a-day kind of family.
My pediatrician actually says this is a healthy way for kids to eat because they regulate themselves and become more healthy eaters.
Did you say food? I love food...
Fruit Snacks - the only one I like for my kids - Fruitabu - organic squished fruit.
Granola Bars - I can only eat the ones from Trader Joes - chocolate...peanut butter...yum.
Cereal - Chocolate Chex... Cinnamon Streusel Mini-wheats... Strawberry yogurt cheerios... (we've been on an Oh's kick too) My daughter likes "brown kix" Reese's Peanut Butter Puffs.
Ice Cream - You can never go wrong with Haagen-Daz Mayan Chocolate - or the dulce de leche bars.
Rich desserts... Ruth's Chris had a Chocolate Souffle that was orgasmic...
Key here is Chocolate - the UK did a study a few years back that I swear by. Chocolate eaten by pregnant mommies produce happier babies. That's all I need to indulge. I would also say that this is true after the baby is outside the womb...but I'm no scientist.
Dear Open-Minded Sophisticate,
I love Raisin Nut Bran (sorry, ~j) because it's perfect. Although I will deny it unless cornered, I mixed Other Half's Peanut Butter Crunch with my Muesli from the health food store. Don't tell Good Earth (I think it will hurt their feelings.)
Ice cream-wise, you need Hagen Daaz Mayan Chocolate as fast as you can possibly get it.
Sour Candy- Altoid Sours.
Elaine's for baguettes (but you already knew that.) Next time you are in Target, look for a loaf called Old World Rye (or something like that.) You're welcome in advance. Next time you're in Salt Lake, just head on over to Vosen's Bread Paradise (because it is.)
Fruit Snacks? Sorry, everyone has to draw the line someplace, and for me, that line is fruit snacks.
I see Queen already mentioned Mayan Chocolate. May I raise you a Cinnamon Dulce De Leche?
I am working on a hot chocolate recipe that will knock your ever lovin' socks off. I bet even the Chief will say his famous, "Oh, that'll do."
I have a confession to make. I LOVE me some Great Value Smiles fruit snacks. Yes, they are from Wal Mart, and I steal them from my children ANY chance I get!
I also love Oh's. When my youngest was in the hospital following a surgery, the box of Oh's and I had a little fling. Once I open a box, it's hard for me to stay away from them. I love them dry...mmmm
I also do not like Quaker Granola bars. But I love, love, love the Sweet 'N Salty Peanut from Nature Valley, or whatever it's called.
Okay, now I'm going downstairs for another slice of my fabulous Carrot cake, because my intuition says I should!! And yes, I just bragged about my cake because it's THAT good!
IE forever baby!
PS: whatever Weight Watchers is trying to tell people: IT IS A DIET!
Sorry - I'm just a little bugged with them but extremely happy for you!
Wheaties (the breakfast of champions) with sliced bananas
I only buy the fruit snacks with real fruit in them. There used to be these cherry ones that were shaped like little cherries--yum! Costco carried a big family size pack by Minute Maid or Welches--some juice brand. They were good and may have even had vitamins.
Queen and Azúcar mentioned my favorite ice creams (I once wrote a n entire post about Mayan Chocolate), but I'm also fond of homemade, as well as Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. (My favorite was the cookie dough Peace Pop, but they quit making them. Now of all times!)
I'm a bit of a bread snob, but I can't afford what I love so I usually ask for Macey's bread right out of the oven. And they usually give it to me, too.
Love the study Queen mentioned. Of course that would be scientifically proven. I know it to be true.
I was going to recommend the Nature Valley Sweet and Salty also. The peanut ones taste like candy bars.
While you're trying the Nature Valley's. . .throw in a couple of boxes of their yogurt granola bars. . .that'll give you a little smooth with your granola. We love the strawberry, and the lemon (hard to find that one).
I love Quaker's Crunchy Corn Bran Cereal - it's hard to find (my SuperTarget carries it), but worth the search. Love it with a drizzle of honey and some slice bananas.
Come to Texas for some Blue Bell Ice Cream - it's the best!
I agree with Wendy on the Nature Valley yogurt bars. Yum.
For a peanut butter fix, I'd try the Fiber One Oat & Peanut Butter ones. Regularity AND peanut buttery goodness.
Hi Courtney!
i don't know if you remember me- but I was in your Willowbrook ward way back in the day- and I can't believe it- but I found your blog through some random blog jumping completely bored last night... i had to read through quite a bit of your journal to make sure it was you- but it is!:) When I saw Jesse and Lindsay- I knew for sure (because they were in the next ward we moved to in Utah)
anyhow- congrats on being pregnant! That is awesome! I don't really have much help for you on the food thing- except I too, LOVED intuitive eating:)
Oh- and you know the Bentons?? I lived a block down from Aaron and his family growing up. Too funny!
I love your blog- you are hilarious- and I hope you don't mind if I keep coming back:)
I was all about cold cereal, of the Chex variety. However I had a serious addiction to Oh's. I loved how the crunchinest almost hurt my mouth. Now they are slightly too sweet for me, so if you want the perfect bowl, I say one part Oh's, one part Cherrios. Mmmmmm.
If you want to talk fruit snacks, you CANNOT beat Nature's own, natural fruit snacks. They are a rare breed and as far as I know can only be found at Target. Get the juicy nuggets, not the strings. (All though the strings are covered in sour sugar. This may be an answer to your prayers.)
As a culinary professional (see my degree if you want) I think I am capable to answer these questions:
- Fruit Snacks: The best are from Costco. Good portions and very soft. Healthy alternative are dried strawberries if you can find the chewy ones. Buy some the next time you are at Pike's in Seattle.
- Granola Bars: I personally like Nature's Valley Trail Mix Mixed Fruit. So delicious with its almonds and dried cranberries.
- Cold Cereal: I'm surprised that you find Oh's hard to find. It seems they are everywhere in AZ for $1.99. (Funny, but I taste tested Oh's for a marketing study before they came out into the store. I liked them then and I like them now.) Organic Peanut Butter Panda Puffs are good too. Puffins is good as well. I personally eat Shredded Wheat frequently with bananas and a smidgen of honey. Deliciousness.
- Artisan Bread - Costco. Rosemary Olive Oil. $3.99. Two loaves.
- Rich Desserts - Your sister's chocolate cake and Vanilla Bean crème brulee
from Cafe Trio in Salt Lake City.
- Ice Cream - I love me a Frozen Hot Chocolate from Dairy Queen.
- Sour Candy - Lemonheads are a favorite for me so I can't really help here.
Oh my gosh and Haagen Dazs has a new line called "Reserve" and the best flavors are Toasted Coconut Sesame Brittle and Hawaiian Lehua Honey and Sweet Cream. So, so, so good.
I have always loved icecream, but now that I'm pregnant, I REALLY love ice cream. One of my favorites is to get the chocolate/vanilla swirl frozen yogurt at Costco. I also have discovered that if you pour milk in your ice cream bowl and mix it around you get an instant milkshake. Delish!
You need sour gushers. It blends the sour with the fruit snack. Pure genius.
For colon blow cereal, Post Raisin Bran is good. Way better flakes than Kellogg's Raisin Bran. For sugary no nutrition cereal, Honeycomb. Yum.
I was pregnant last year and craved ice cream big time. I always found that soft serve vanilla was the best. Or an M&M McFlurry from McDonalds.
For decadent desserts, how about Key lime cheesecake. Good if you are looking to satisfy the tart craving.
I'm a fan of Fiber One granola bars--soft and chewy and all of that fiber must be good for you.
For cold cereal I like Multi-grain Cheerios. They kick all other Cheerios' butt.
Fruit snacks: I can't bring myself to do it. I have an aversion to everything gummy. I choose fruit leather instead. I buy it at Costco. Fruit sweetened goodness and my kids LOVE it.
Bread: artisan breads (La Brea baby) at (where else?) Costco unless I can get to a real bakery.
I second (or twelveth) the whole Hagen Daaz and Nature Valley Sweet & Salty movement....
Obviously, I'm not mathematician, but I believe that happy eating = happy mama = happy baby.
Peanut Buster Parfait.
And if you want so delicious ghetto deliciousness, try those extremely unhealthy Sunshine brand granola bars that are about $1 and are, essentially, coconut and peanut butter covered in waxy chocolate. But they say granola, so you know it is healthy.
And throw some grapes in the freezer.
Lurker here -- love to read your witty sense of humor.
I'm picky about my food, but my children are beyond pickiness into the realm of obstinate.
I have only one suggestion: Sunbelt granola bars, specifically the chocolate chip. They are soft, chewy and yummy with no hydro whatevers involved. They are "generic" so find them at quality retailers like Macey's or Foo4Less (if they carry them in Utah).
Fruit snacks, Welche's. It has the shortest list of ingredients. As far as I've searched they are the best oens for you as far as a fruit snack goes. They are made with real juice and have 100% of your vitamin C.
Granola bars, Cascadian Farms. They are organic but they only come in chocolate chip. They are soft as soft can be.
I only eat granola with yogurt for my morning cereal. I don't know how to help you on that one.
Breyers is the best ice cream by far. It doesn't break the bank, but it's creamy delicious and comes in fabulously yummy flavors. My fave is mint chocolate chip.
Good luck my dear.
First off, it was sooo great to finally catch you and chat for a minute -- I've been meaning to do that for awhile! Even if the men were giving us stink eye while they waited! Anyway, I really like the Salty Sweet bars by nature valley. They are soft and chewy and quite good! And I have been on a Honey Bunches of Oats kick lately -- the one with cinnamon clusters. Mmmm! And call me crazy, but I think McD's serves up a nice batch of ice cream on a cone -- with or without the waxy hard chocolate!
Don't forget Little Debbie Nutty Bars. They'll get you through church (2 per package).
YES to the Fiber One bar comment . . . totally agree.
But what do I know? I ate a can of corned beef hash every day I was pregnant with my first baby. ew...
And that vegan personal reference . . . can't you please share?
I too began craving Oh's and granola bars once I was pregnant. And my stomach which formerly shunned most dairy is now tamped by it. ... I like Oh's and honeycomb and Nature valley Oats and Honey granola bars. And fruit leather. ... Blue Bell ice cream is my ice cream of choice but I rarely partake. It makes it that much better for me.
Ooh!! - - and blueberries in regular corn flakes. So refreshing.
Oh man I understand! I LOVE FOOD! When I was prego with my first daughter I had NEVER EVER touched fish with a 10ft pole. I couldn't get enough of it! Then with my 2nd I couldn't get enough of cooked sushi roles and wasabi! ANYTHING spicy. Intuitive eating happens when prego, or more like posessed eating! Now I don't eat sushi and fish is OK. Enjoy the foods because they have never tasted as good as when you are prego. It is like your tastebuds are hightened to new levels!
Fruit Snacks: If you prefer the gummy ones, I prefer the Welch's variety. If you want REAL fruit snacks, try "Just Fruit Snacks" from Good Earth. Apple & apricot are my favorites.
Cereal: Peanut Butter Panda Puffs from Good Earth. They can leave a bit of a film in your mouth, but I don't mind.
Ice Cream: If you want smooth, creamy goodness, try Coneys in Orem. Technically they are frozen custard, not ice cream, but give it a chance - you'll like it! If you want something from the store, Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia is the best, with Pistachio Pistachio and Chunky Monkey running a close tie for second.
Desserts: Get a tub full of mini-éclairs or cream puffs from Sam's. If you let the puffs thaw just right, they explode perfectly in your mouth. Careful, though - I happen to know that one pregnant woman can eat an entire tub of either.
I don't time to read all the comments, but just in case nobody said it, Kashi Go Lean cereal is the most fabulous high fibre cereal ever made, and if you have to take massive iron supplements, you will need your 8 grams! (PS-I went thru the weirdness, too--non-pregnant I have almost no sweet tooth and cannot digest dairy; pregnant, ate ice cream and all manner of fruit/honey/yogurt smoothies and cereal...can't stand any of that with no bebe in my tummy!)
ummm, please don't eat fruit snacks. They seem kind of like alien food. Are they fruit? Are they rubber? What exactly did they have to add to those to make them bounce like that?
And do you think it's intuitive if my body is telling me to drink hot chocolate every day at 11:00 a.m.?
weight watchers is a diet?!?!
i had no idea.
hot fudge oreo shake from sonic...that is all i have to say.
Fine, I'll confess. The best cereal in the world is Cookie Crisp. I know it falls in neither the peanut butter or fibrous categories, but it's cookie cereal. COOKIE CEREAL. Does it taste just like chocolate chip cookies? No. But it tastes like awesomeness all the same. I also love Capn' Crunch Peanut Butter. I buy neither of these items because they are both bad for me and I'm cheap and buy generic cereal.
I heart Sour Patch Kids and Sour Straws.
In Texas we have Central Market with fantastic rosemary bread and sourdough to die for. The challah is great too. And we have Blue Bell Ice Cream which is fantabulous. I realize that none of this helps you because they're in Texas, but I felt like I had to represent.
Nature's Own granola bars rock. and I second the suggestion of those frozen cream puffs. If you eat them before they are thawed completely you get a frozen creamy center, which I love.
Your beloved Target actually has my favorite fruit snacks. It's the Target brand ones that are in the shapes of fruit and I believe have some kind of actual fruit juice in them. Love them.
A sidenote on chocolate and pregnancy, Shirley Temple's ever ambitious mother refused to eat chocolate while she was pregnant hoping that her yet born starlette would be spared the temptation. To no avail, Shirley loved chocolate. Go ahead and indulge.
Ahhh but these answers do amuse me. Who knew one question could produce such entertaining thoughts?
never underestimate the power of food.
I am baffled that no one mentioned Ben and Jerry's Creme Brulee ice cream. THAT is amazing shiz. I dare you not to eat the whole thing.
Fruit Snacks: Let's not be silly- Gushers for that juicy goodness and wretched artificial flavoring that unfortunantly tastes so good.
Cereal: I don't know when Utah is going to wise up and get Trader Joe's, but once they do, get yourself some Vanilla Almond Granola. The Maple Pecan is great too.
Granola Bars: (I actually just typoed "granola bras". Wonder what that is like.) Skip granola bars. They aren't even that great to begin with.
Sour Candy: Azucar hit it right on. Altoid Sour Tangerine thingys are great. And they come in a cute little tin and fit in your scripture bag. Especially handy for High Council Sunday.
Dairy Queen has some good ice cream. peanut butter cup blizzard w/extra pbc is the best way to go.
If you are in the STG area for any food I reccomend Marv's or Frostop. Picadilly chips are so the way to go. But you must have Fry sauce with them.
Cold Cereal: Cracklin' Oat Bran! Those senior citz really know something about regularity. Don't let the demographic fool you, they are tasty as the day is long. They make you feel as though you are eating some kind of granola too.
Fruit snacks: Jury is still out. If I could find a brand that does not stick to my kids teeth for time and all eternity I just might endorse it.
Ice cream: I'm a sucker for Baskin & Robbins Peanut Butter and Chocolate and Jamoca Almond Fudge. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm me likey.
Sour Candy: Lemon Heads. In moderation otherwise my teeth hurt.
I'm confused...do you eat chicken now?
Mortonfam mentioned the world's best fruit snack, but I think they're by Florida's Natural? They are hard to come by, but if you see them buy in bulk! Best flavor is the blueberry nuggets and at only 30 calories a pack, you can load up. I can't find them here in Logan, poor me.
Sweet & Salty peanut granola bars really are wonderful.
We have a bakery here called Crumb Brothers which also distributes to Wild Oats in Salt Lake and they have a seeded baguette which is lusciously crunchy and covered with poppy and fennel seeds, slap a hunk of brie inside and float away.
Right now there is a special edition of Dreyers 1/2 fat for American Idol that is chocolate with oreos in it. I actually didn't believe my husband that it was lowfat.
My saving pregnancy food was crispy gingersnaps which are delicious and eased my naseau with it's gingeryness.
I have never believed in LABELED EATING. OR DIETING. Your body will tell you what you need.
I can't believe no one has mentioned Breyers new ice cream - Fried Ice Cream. It's low fat too, so at 4g per serving I don't feel guilty about it.
I also love the Oh's, but my fave is Special K Fruit and Yogurt.
Ditto on the Fiber One bars. I like the chocolate and oats because I'm anti peanut butter.
smooth granola bar = 3 musketeers
"I'm a fruitarian, I only eat food that has already fallen off the tree"
and hummus.
I have no idea why my body is telling me to bake a scratch cake everyday, I don't even like cake, nor am I pregnant. It is winter though and that alone produces some unpredictable eating for sure.
I am only an expert on one of your requests and it is the bestest and best for you cereal. I get it either at the health food store or Costco (which is mucho cheaper). Write this down girl!
Natures Path Organic Pumpkin Flax Plus Granola (with 400 mg omega'3's to boot! But why such a long name?)
You are going to thank me I promise!
Hmmm... I bet I could make this into a granola bar! Or better yet a cake!!!!!!!!
when up in salt lake city, hit Ruth's diner up immigration canyon and have their creme brulee AND their homemade pudding. amazing amazing. also, betty crocker turtle brownies should be consumed in large quantities.
fruit leathers from costco are wonderful.
Courtney for President.
I am so in love with peanut butter cereal. My two favorites are Peanut Butter Bumpers and Peanut Butter Puffins - both probably sold at Good Earth.
(I don't let myself purchase either very often because I usually end up going through an entire box in two days. Or, if I'm being totally honest, sometimes slightly less than two days . . .)
Here are the champions of my world: Little Debbie Nutty Bars (peanut butter!) and Frosted Mini-Wheats with very cold milk, but don't let them sit too long-you want that wheaty crunch! Also, the Rosemary and Something bread from Costco (in a two-pack) is fabulous and freezes well.
i like the cinnamon harvest kashi cereal. i think that's what it's called. good luck!
It really was celestial meeting you at Target. We were gonna go up to Park City, but I think you just filled my celebrity quota for the year.
When I was pregnant last summer, I went to every Sonic in Utah County to buy a bag of their ice, but all of them said they couldn't because their machines were "overworked." That ticked me off. I think you already are doing the Sonic ice thing, though. Yum.
I second the Cracklin' Oat Bran suggestion. Yes, it may indeed resemble dog food in appearance, but oh how it tastes like Oatmeal Cookies! I love that stuff dry too. Perfect snack, and fiber to boot, who could ask for more?
Forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but if you're craving ice, you may be low on iron. It' true.
And Cap'n Crunch Peanut Butter cereal is fun for a change. (Plus I think it has iron--just watching out for you cjane!)
I was going to suggest Eliane's for baguettes, and Crumb Bros. for amazingly good artisan bread if you have a Logan connection, but those have already been preached. Amen, sisters!
If you haven't tried the key lime tarts and the dark chocolate-dipped macaroons at Kneader's, you and the Chief just ain't lived yet.
I have made a list of things I am going to try. I will have to do an updated post.
P.S. Jennifer B. You are so kind to look out for me! I only eat ice because it keeps me hydrated. I don't really crave it. I had my iron checked and all looked A OKAY! But you are good to suggest because my sisters are prone to have low iron.
I did the ice cream-thing too, during pregnancy. However, I went to the BYU creamery one time (while pregnant) with some friends (double-date). They had me laughing so hard that I ended up seeing the ice cream again, when I threw up all over the BYU parking lot.
So....
Ice cream + pregnant = GOOD
Ice cream + pregnant + laughing really hard over an extended period of time = BAD (but so worth it!)
I was a big fan of Tiramisu...
BIG fan!
Until my bishop said it was against the W.o.W. (oops!)
OK
Intuitive eating is such a funny thing for the way that our bodies really want to eat. Why can't we all just get along with our food?
fruit leather - sounds weird, totally natural and yum yum yummy. Kind of like a cross between dried fruit and a fruit roll up - only thicker. It's better than it sounds.
I am a huge fan of Skinny Cow ice cream treats. Not just the lower calorie count, but they are actually really good. That and Breyers Natural Vanilla - OK, so my ice cream palate isn't so adventurous. I used to love Hagen Daaz Rum Raisen, but I got a little sick of it...
When I was pregnant with my first daughter, all I wanted was pink food - pink milkshakes and pink ham sandwiches and pink fruit. My husband was really concerned about the ramifications of all the pink food if the babe had been a boy - dork. Now, I can't eat anything pink!
happy eating!
Be careful with the ice, I broke 2 teeth. My brother, the dentist, says, "Teeth are jewels, not tools." Hardy har har.
If you are truly hard core sour, a little dipping cup of citric acid mixed with salt 50/50 ratio, is great for dipping Jolly Ranchers and popsicles in.
Beware heartburn.
