Notes from the Gem State

Typical Evening

Let me level with you,
I never cared for Twin Falls Idaho much.

I tried to like it from the beginning. I toured the sights, ate the cuisine and met all the folks. I wanted to be impressed with the Niagra of the West (Shoshone Falls) but couldn't help but compare it to the Niagra of the East. I took pictures of Balanced Rock, but felt pretty sure that it wasn't just juxtaposed by nature. I tried the hot fries from Steve-O's to Jackson's Cafe in Buhl (the Trout Capital of the World!) but still salivated for Stan's in Provo. I took lengthy walks out into the endless fields of corn, beans and potatoes, but missed my mountains.

Even this: Their canyon goes down into the earth, rather than up to Park City.

And let's just not start with the Twin Falls County Fair.

But most of all, I hated turning into a Gadget Widow as Chup and Md abandoned all for a weekend of computers, remote control planes-trains-automobiles, gaming consoles and the wizardry of anything with a hard drive. (No pun intended.)

But something happened this weekend. Whether it was taking The Chief up for his very first visit to the Gem State, or fact that the Blue Lakes Blvd Article Circle's soft serve is more creamy than that of Orem's State Street Article Circle, or the discovery that there is now a place to get schwarma in Twin Falls (Twin Falls Burger and Kabob) I don't know. All I can say is that I've had a change of heart.

Wait . . . now that I think about it, I did feel a sort of melting when we all went through the new Twin Falls temple. All dressed to the nines, the structure boasted marble from Italy, light wood from Africa and decorated on windows and woodwork was the Idaho State Flower, the Syringa. I think Fancy has come to this quiet town in the Magic Valley. By golly.

I can do fancy.

As we moved from room to room in this lovely place of worship I felt more and more like this could be my temple someday. If Chup needed to get back to roots (beets, potatoes, etc.) I could follow. There would be Honey and Popeye The Chief's devoted grandparents living on the canyon rim. In the next town over I could visit Lawdy and her house full of delightful children and take walks next to the corn fields. I could learn to shop in the streets of the post-dated downtown area and eat potato pizza at Gerties. If I could convince Kentucky to buy the house next door we could be Gadget Widows together and push our sons in the communal backyard swing set. Does this blog even know how much I love Kentucky? She's the mustard to my mayo (inside joke).

So it was that I made peace with Twin Falls Idaho, the hometown of my beloved. I am ready if the Lord should send us there.

But please Heaven, don't be too hasty.

Muffin and "boyfriend"

Chup's little sister Muffin brought her "boyfriend" to meet us this weekend. I've decided that there is nothing more I like than to be the skeptical family member.

Should Muffin date him?

I'll be the judge of that.

So I asked him forty four million questions like,

"Where are you from?"

"Where does your mom live?"

"Have you ever had dysentery?"

"Lice?"

I also tried to put him in as many socially awkward positions as possible just to see how hot the pot could get before he jumped out. I nursed my infant in front of him, I asked him about religion, politics and feminism, and I made him say something nice about my parents-in-law when the family was having a real and tender moment.

I think he really got sick of me because at one point he said something about me being "the pregnant one." After which he took two distinct jabs at my wardrobe choices.

As you can probably guess, "boyfriend" didn't not score well on my report card.

And it's too bad no one ever listens to me. Apparently she's just going to keep on loving him anyway.

Sigh.

Don't you just enjoy this picture of a doctor, batman and a ghost?

Me too.

Ah, Cjane...hopefully you didn't put Chup through all of the rigmarole too.

Also, never forget that Dante's Peak was filmed in Idaho...yet another claim to fame.

Is it true they're coming out with potato ice cream?

My roots go back to the gem state as well. I even have a cousin in Twin. Her husband is a cop. If you want to put the boyfriend under surveillance I think I might be able to arrange that...

That picture is very precious (grandpa and his boys...)

Would you like to know a reason Twin Falls is terrific? One of my good friends got transferred there with her family. If you ever run into Megan Humble tell her Texas misses her.

The first time we went to the "Niagara of the West" we expected something really great. When we saw what it actually was, we thought we had just caught it at the wrong time of year! Well, everytime we made the trip from Utah to Oregon (my home) we stopped to see if the falls were bigger. Nope! We still laugh about good ole Shoshone Falls. Glad you found some affection for that place. I do agree, their Arctic Circle rocks!

This is me said...

Sounds like we are going to have quite the battle because WE are trying to convince Kentucky to buy the house next door to US.

That picture of MD and Chup is classic. Thanks for coining the term "Gadget Widow." I'm going to start using that one for sure.

You know how I feel about TF,I.
And that last picture is priceless!

Fate will probably play a horrible and ironic trick on us. someday when He wants to humble you to the core, you'll actually move here. And just then He'll judge that I have arrived at humility and will be moving away to Boston just then. And I'll sigh and ask Mr. Finch, can't we stay, cause now Cjane will be my neighbor, and now it's hip to be here with Cjane.

Hey now, Twin Falls was hot stuff when I spent the summer working in Sun Valley, ID. There was no where to shop in Sun Valley (unless you were a millionaire), so my friends and I would find someone with a car and delight in the two hour trip to civilization (Twin Falls!) and a mall. It really was a big deal! The Shoshone Falls are pretty cool too--in fact, one friend told me that Evil Kinevil once tried to cross the falls on his motorcycle. If I remember right, I think he might have even died attempting such a feat. Though I now live in the center of the universe (Boston--or so many who live here think!), I still have a special place in my heart for Twin Falls. Enjoy your trip!

I remember when we were moving to TF, we stopped for lunch at the Arctic Circle and I thought the same thing...it DID taste better. Weird. There are a few things I miss about TF (Idaho Joe's burger, fry and pie combo, the Hagerman horse, the thrift-store California strip downtown, and the smell of french fries at night due to the fact we lived downwind from OreIda), but Blue Lakes Blvd. and the County Fair are surprisingly not on my list.

I'd never been north of Logan until I was 21.

I stand by that.

I hope that doctor is related to the chief because they look exactly alike.

And, in your terms, let's give up some jazz hands to Idaho. I'm converted, too.

HEY! I am from Buhl and proud of it! OUr county fair rocks! I took my kids to the Davis County Fair here in good old Utah last year and was disappointed to say the least!

I will agree that the Falls are not great. They were better when I was a kid. There was SOOO much more water that went over when I was a kid.

The Arctic Circle does have the best ice cream, but Smith's on Broadway in Buhl has hard ice cream in tons of flavors, including potato and it is super yummy. My parents own the drycleaners across the street and I know from personal experience how good it is!
I still love your blog and your posts- they make me laugh- even if you don't like Buhl. ;[

I'm from an even smaller town in Idaho and based on my husbands comments those little towns just seem to grow on you. I'm sure the temple helps though!

Every time Steve and his brother get together, I become a Gadget Widow as well. Let me know if you want to start a support group. I'm thinking it could involve cinnamon bears, a karaoke machine, and Azúcar baking things for us.

I love Kentucky too.

Oh, wait.

you're right: you did give birth to your father-in-law.

I'll have to bake in advance, because my husband is a gadget widower.

Both of my younger sons have those jammies (along with Superman) and they MUST be worn CONSTANTLY due to the impressive cape that completes the ensemble. I wish I had some too...

Hey! My father-in-law is a doctor in Twin Falls too!

The best thing in Twin is 9 Beans & burrito. Also Buffalo Chips for breakfast at the Buffalo Cafe. A hike & a swim in Box Canyon, near Wendell. A soak at Miracle Hot Springs in Hagerman. Vineyard. The underground house. (which was recently torn down...) also the D.I. in Twin Falls always has some great stuff!

Oh mine shattered heart... that's where I'm from... good old Twin. But I love it. Probably cause absence makes the heart grow fonder. :)

Praying for you all.
