Today I wore my leg warmers and I don't care what you think about leg warmers. Leg warmers are phenomenal accessories because they function to do one thing: warm my legs. Don't you know that when your body senses that your legs are cold it sends a message to the brain that you need more hair on your legs to keep you warm? Hairy legs? Ugh. I mean, unless you like hairy legs. Then, hairy legs? Hooray!
But also, my legs are a bit white in this bitter cold climate I call the Mountain West. Even though today was like seventy degrees outside and the children and I spent the afternoon on our backyard jungle gym (thank you BobAnn) eating grilled cheese and fishy crackers. In all that time I really should've uncovered my legs from my leg warmers to tan them up a bit. But you know, it is hard to think about these things when the girls are singing "You better watch out, you better not cry . . ." Why? Why? "I'm tellin' you why. Santa Claus is coming to town." In like seventy days.
Maybe I'll ask for a tan for Christmas.
Or more leg warmers?
Mine are gray. I do have a set of brown but they always shrink down to my ankles every time I wear them. I haven't thrown them out yet because I think I might start working out to tone-up my calves. Then those brown leg warmers will fit snug for sure! Anyway, gray and sort of cable knit. That about describes my current leg warmers.
Chup hhhates them.
(His problem.)
I wear them with skirts. Black, pencil, Mexican and cotton skirts. Did you know that skirts come in all those varieties? Well, they do. Call the Banana Repub.
I am not a professional dancer either, just someone who likes to keep their legs warm. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love to dance! But I don't get paid to do it which makes my leg warmer wearing just a simple pastime. I think that is special.
Jane asked for leg warmers today. I think I just might splurge and get her some. She is named after me, you know, so she might as well know the secrets of my success . . . leg warmers and being my ability to wiggle my ear without the use of my hands.
Now I am rethinking ear muffs.

130 Pieces of Opinion:
Old Navy has some cute leg warmers!
You really are hilarious.
I love when people's personality still comes through when enduring the heaviness of tragedy.
Thank you for the good chuckle.
Hot pink were my leg warmers of choice...back in the day! For those of us who live in cold country they serve a real purpose! You go girl...Sport them like no other!! Your Awesome!
Hahahaha! My 14 year old is trying to bring them back into style. She wore some for Halloween, and then received two more pair for her birthday last week :)
This post will make her happy!
I haven't laughed that much about leg warmers in ages.
Thanks!
That was cute although I haven't worn them since aerobics class in the '80's. I don't think that was what they were meant for...maybe I should try them for practical reasons :)
Ahh -- leg warmers. I'm thinking back to Flashdance and ripped sweatshirts and the vision of my younger sister furiously pedalling on a stationary bike in her room to the soundtrack with huge earphones on her ears and, yes, leg warmers. And that's before your time -- you go girl with the leg warmers! And I've been lurking, loving your writing, your warmth, your story. Thank you.
I love leg warmers. I also love being warm. Have you seen baby legs. They are leg warmers for babies, and they are so darn cute. I love to check up on your blog. Thanks for a fun post.
You are so wonderful. Can you ever hear that enough. Seriously. You're hilarious. Keep 'em coming.
And by the by...I was a ballet dancer with black leg warmers. Okay, I was seven...but I rocked out to Neil Diamond while doing ballet performances for my dolls in my bedroom. I was awesome. The performances were amazing. It was probably the leg warmers.
They say if you're old enough to have worn a fashion the first time around you are too old to wear it the next time it's in style.
I hate "them".
My rule is that if you didn't wear it when it was in style the last time because you weren't cool enough or your parents wouldn't buy it for you, then you can wear it until you're too old to dress yourself(whether it's leg warmers or pink Kangaroo shoes).
Rock on, legwarmer girl.
I also LOVE leg warmers. Also, arm warmers. My kids and I made some using the knifty knitter device, which is hot fun and super easy.
You are adorable.
Oh, Courtney,(look at me talkin' like I know ya) I just love you. I love you so much, in fact, that I've gone ahead and made myself a username so's that I will no longer be "anonymous" signed, "beth, again" but now I'm actually somebody! I'm 'beth, again'. So anyway. I love that your wearing your leg warmers. even if chup hhhates them. (that is his problem) and that's ok. I love that I can hear you not sounding snotty when you say it's his problem. about a year ago my sister was visiting me (in Portland, Oregon) and we were downtown, she was wearing leg warmers (and a really cute dress) and some cowboy kid in a truck pulled up along side us as we walked down the city street, and he said, "Ma'am, those are real nice leg warmers." then he drove away. It was rather random so I liked it and still think about it whenever I think about leg warmers. And you've made me think about legwarmers. So. Hmm. I'm going on much too long. I'll let you go now. but, thanks Courtney, for sharing you.
Ummmm...LOL Santas comin' in more like 37 days!! 70 I WISH!!
Leg warmers are fab! I remember when...
Have you watched Flashdance lately? lol
My daughter has pink, sparkly leg warmers that she pulls up over her knees. As long as you don't do that - or start sporting the ridiculous headband that's been seen cropping up - I'm with ya.
i think i just might need some of those now. it's been over 20 years since i had a pair! good luck on wearing the brown ones.
p.s. thanks for the blogwork. i love reading here. inspiring!
Rock on with your leg warmers and your bad self. Not to alarm you or anything, but Christmas is only thirty-five days away, good luck!
Dare I point out that its actually only 43 days until Christmas, can you believe how quickly it's crept up this year?!
I love reading your blog! I think all men hate leg warmers; oh well they would like them too if they had to wear skirts.
My dad could wiggle his ears without touching them! I was fascinated!
A very special talent indeed.
The happiest day of my life was when leg warmers came back en vogue ... ok, maybe not the "happiest" but close! Hahaha!
Thinking about the brisk Utah weather and hearing your musing on leg warmers reminds me that Stephanie will be so much better off living around you to lift her spirits during her recovery. You are the keeper of the positive and will be a constant reminder of all that is good about the world.
Also, considering the weather in Utah, as opposed to the scorching heat and relentless air conditioning in most of AZ, not just Nie Nie's soul but also her body will be better off in Utah.
CJane, Bring back the ear muffs!! It's about time. They don't mess up our beautiful dos, and they are mighty cute, I say!
There are baby leg warmers too called Baby Legs. They're great because some times those little pants they wear ride up and their chubby legs get so cold! My 4 yr old would dig leg warmers. I should get ehr some.
I used to wear leg warmers ALL the time and once again, they are back in style,,lol. They do keep our legs warm don't they..And I feel 'oh so like a ballet dancer'.
God bless precious one and know you and your family are covered in prayers daily. It's amazing isn't it, that we may never meet face to face here on earth, but God brings you to my mind during the days,,,and says, "say a prayer, lift them up, bless them with My sweet Word over them", and I do.
((hugs))
You crack me up!! Set the fashion trend there in Utah. Make leg warmers the state of Utah fashion accessory of the year!!
I'm all for it! Especially since I was a late joiner to the leg warmer club in the 80's. Yes, I was one of those pathetic teens who once they finally figured out the trend and bought some the trend had died and I looked like a too young aerobics instructor. Knew I should have kept them!
Are there any leg warmers on your Christmas list?? Does Santa know of Jane's interest?
Your sense of humor sounds a lot like your brother Chris's in this post. (Although he doesn't wear leg warmers I don't think.)I also had leg warmers the first time around. My mom didn't seem to think they were very attractive and I had to tell her that I would use them for dance class too which proved difficult as they slid down whenever I moved and made dancing awkward which was already a handicap for me...Anyway, I'm sure you look fabulous.
HOoray for the leg warmers! My Mom made my sisters and I a pair each way back when so we could wear them during "Fame". Oh yeah, we were HOT laying on our stomachs on the floor with our leg warmers watching the show!
(My sister Debi had a crush on Danny, the funny one.)
There is a pattern for leggies (as my 5 year old niece calls them) in Joelle Hoverson's book Last Minute Knitted gifts. My mother in law is knitting she and her sister pairs for Christmas. We live in the midwest and it is cold!!
Love this post!! You will most definitely have to get Jane some - especially if she is your namesake!
I might have to check out Old Navy for my girls - Bella would LOVE them!!!
Ha! I still have original leg warmers from the early 80s. They are red, navy and grey, striped.
Horizontally striped.
Give me a holler if you'd like to borrow them. Chup'll love them, I'm sure!
Miss you--
CW
I think you may have been the final catalyst in my decision to sport the ol' leg warmer - Ive been contemplating this idea, but was unsure. They sound WONderful! And I totally think you should get some for Jane!
Ok, really, you are cracking me up. This is the first time, in a long time, I have read your post first thing in the morning and not bawled my eyes out.
I see a future post on your blog with a picture of both girls, in leg warmers, midair jumping off the couch or squirming on a quilt on the floor giggling. Just because you wear them, clearly, they will have to wear them too. Not only are you a internet celebrity, now you are a fashion trendsetter!
When Stephanie comes home to a Utah winter, with her precious new skin, she is going to want to wear them too!
Too funny! I haven't touched a leg-warmer since my crazyelemntary days in Utah back in the early eighties. They make some really cute ones for kids that I would totally wear if they wouldn't cut offm y circulation. . . plus I livein TX now--hardly necessary.
Plus it must kind of make you feel like "Flashdance"--extra bonus!
I am all about the legwarmers as I've been cold since Saturday.
I'll look into this phenom.
All I can think of is Olivia Newton John in that movie or video "let's get physical".........they STILL sell leg warmers??? I think if I put leg warmers on in Arkansas I would be shot....perhaps mistaken identity for a furry animal of sorts (someone's supper in these parts).
love this.
and i agree ... leg warmers rule!
cute, as per!! now, as a fellow coldie, I just want you to think about arm warmers too. Then Chup will really fall in love with your warmth. As a florist, going in and out of the cooler(FREEZER) and in minnesota too boot!!! I am dreaming of arm warmers this season and I am going to go to etsy first. STAY WARM SISTER!!!
You SERIOUSLY are so awesome.
hahaha, I AM a professional ballet dancer and I don't even wear leg warmers! But more power to you! Keep those legs snuggly warm!
Too funny! Yes, I think Jane needs a pair of them too:)
I love leg warmers and did you know that when we went back to Montreal two years ago...leg warmers were the big thing! So cute! I love how it takes two years for their fashions to make their way west. Buy one for every day of the week...Chup will learn to love them.
I can wiggle my ear too! (just my left one)
Funny you should mention that... my five year old just started tap dance classes and a lot of the little ones in her class wear leg warmers. Now I can't get leg warmers off my mind. They rock!!
lol. i saw someone last night at my fundraiser for you sis who was wearing leg warmers and i though, "hey, those are kinda cute, i wish i had some." so random that you are writing about them today. p.s. i can move my ears too! (w/o the use of my hands that is)
I love the "devout study of narcissism" posts. Seriously glad they're back.
I think that YOU can wear leg warmers if you want to, and they will look great.
Of course, if you wear your leg warmers with your Crocs, I don't know if we can still be friends. Fair warning.
You just made my day!! You made tears well up in my eye's. I can just see Chup's face, because my husband would be the same way. I might have to go buy some leg warmers just to annoy my hubby!! I love conspiracy. See you tomorrow, you crazy girl!
A good laugh...I haven't worn leg warmers since 1984. I owned one pair, purple with some argyle design on top. They were the coolest. But I can't go back there...those days are so over for me.
I can totally wiggle my ears without using my hands!! It's a talent like no other! My Mom used to do it all the time and I wanted to learn. I used to just move my eyebrows up & down and thought I was moving my ears. After much practice I can do the real deal! :)
Go leg warmers! About the only good thing that came out of the 80s!
I just bought a pair of leg warmers for my 8 year old daughter. Limited Too has some really cute ones for girls right now.
Praying in Ohio
All I have to say is: BabyLegs. They were designed for babies, but fit kids up to the age of 10. And they have the cutest designs ever - an added benefit is that they're sold at our Target!
leg warmers are for cool people. totally.
You can get cute ones at target...
I love your posts!
I love reading your posts. From Nie to Leg Warmers your posts always put a smile on my face. I too live in Utah and yesterday was so warm I can't believe you kept your leg warmers on! I had my Ugg boots on while running errands and I thought I was gonna scream from the clausterphobia it gave me by the end of my errand running! Good for you for keeping with the leg warmers.
chuckle chuckle! and thank you!
~Donna
Oh, darn. I was hoping they were ruched and orange.
When I was visiting my college kids in Provo a few weeks ago I noticed a darling kiosk at the University Mall that sold darling arm and leg warmers for kids - check it out for Jane!
i am buying some...see link
http://www.sockdreams.com/_shop/pages/accessories_cat_CategoryID_71.php
get with the program, chup.
Dear Courtney,
Just tell Chup that the leg warmers are your 'European style' - here they are back (or maybe they never really left) and we are wearing "arm warmers" and "overknees" as well! (I'm not too sure about the ear muffs though :-)!)
Anything to keep you warm - which brings me to my last comment for today:
Your blog always warms my heart!
Love from Katzelsdorf in Austria,
Nicole
You. Are. Hilarious.
I am over here just giggling at your whole leg warmer situation. I love you just don't care at all what your husband or anyone thinks of your dancing style. I love confidence!
The last time I wore leg warmers was in the 6th grade. I got laughed at by two boys. One I had a crush on and I never wore them again. Low confidence, I do not love!
I wanted to send a card to Christian and Stephanie...but can't find the address I had for the hospital on the recovery site...is there a better place to send cards to now that she has been moved?
I've never been brave enough to wear leg warmers... but... my legs get cold and I'm in the "hairy legs= UG" group! ;)
Oh... and in case people don't believe you about the ear thing... you can always link them to the conference talk where President Monson does it! ;)
Target has leg warmers for 4.99
I too have the talent of wiggling my ears without the use of my hands...must indicate high intelligence or something! I haven't worn leg warmers since 8th grade...you're awesome!
I can wiggle my ears too! We should start a club! :) ha ha!
As a child of the 80's, I firmly believe legwarmers are a staple item. Somewhere along the way, people lost their memo on that, but fortunately, they've relocated that and we can now find legwarmers and wear them to our hearts' content. If Miss Jane feels she should have legwarmers, there is no choice to be made, LOL!
I'm with Chup. No better way to warm the legs than to wear pants - save the skirts for the spring :)
You need to get baby A some 'babylegs'. Legwarmers for babies. BOYS EVEN!!!
R
All I can say is
Leg Warmers=Target
From one Mommy to another.
Jane with start a whole new trend at school cause she's cool. With a cool Aunt.
I loved my leg warmers back in the 1980s when I was ultra-thin and doing aerobics 4 days a week.
However, no one wants to see a chunky 50-year-old in leg warmers ... so sad.
BTW, it's 37 days by my count. If only we had 70! My sewing machine and I could make a lot more gifts.
you aren't a professional dancer but you do love to dance! hahaha
My husband doesn't like it when I wear certain things and I just shrug it off like you do - We're strong girls! You're really strong!
I would ask for a tan but it won't happen!
Well, you may or may not be happy to learn that those things are coming back in style. I just bought my 17-month old a pair from Tar-jhay and even noticed some for older girls while buying my 7-year old some footless tights.
Christmas is only in like half that time so you better get buyin' those leg warmers!
I'm so happy to hear that someone still wears leg warmers. I saw some at Target recently near the tight section and they were SO cute that I wanted to buy a pair. My husband looked at me like I was crazy but now I am going to email him your blog post. I am tall though so they may not stay up. God bless you, your leg warmers and those sweet children.
There is nothing wrong with hairy legs, as long as you have leg warmers to cover them up. ;)
You ought to wear them over thermal underwear pants..Chup would really like that...P
Oooo- I totally need some now. I have been contemplating them to wear with the wide variety of skirts available in the world and I think you have given me permission. I bet they look great with ballet flats, no?
I love legwarmers! I'm definitely making some for my girls this winter!
Now I wants some!!!
Years ago, my mom got me these socks - we'll call them "over the knee socks" - that came up to my thigh. They are AWESOME for keeping warm. At the time I was commuting downtown and had to then walk 6 blocks to my office and it was the coldest winter we'd had in years so I loved those sock! Some of my coworkers used to totally make fun of me but I didn't care - it was all about warmth baby! Still have 'em and will wear them whenever I desire AND I am totally going to look in to legwarmers now too. I bet you can find some REALLY cute ones on Etsy!!
Don't forget the banana clip.
You should definitely check out the Leg Warmers on my site. I think Jane will love the Neopolitan one's. You'll need the 39cm ones though, since she's no baby. ;-)
Let me know, they're on the house if you want them.
Here's a link to see what we have in stock.

Dude! I have a pair of gray cableknit leg warmers that I wear and my husband hates.
Small world!
Oh, and where are those shoes from?
katie.cardon (at) gmail(dot)com
University Mall has these great leg warmers for kids...fun styles and you can use them on your arms and everything. The Kiosk is right by Desert Book or so and I think the owner designer is Lyndi Barrus.!
Buy two get one free! I bought 9 the other day and they are so fun just to look at. Thanksgiving treats for the grandkids....
I love love love leg warmers. I am so glad you do too. That means that they are really cool, for sure!
I made my daughter a few pairs of "leg warmers" a.k.a. "baby legs" from women's knee high socks using this tutorial: http://www.flickr.com/photos/babyhopes/sets/72157594274454468/
sweet jesus, woman, you're killin' me! let me know if you have any trouble finding your leg adornments ~ michigan is full of them! :-D
Shes a maniac , maniac on the floor! and shes dancing like she never danced before!
That is all I could think about!
xoxoxox
Isn't it so funny how we end up wearing/using things we swore we never would. I would totally wear leg warmers. And my husband would also despise them. But hey, function has to beat our form sometimes. (but in this case I secretly think they're cute).
Hanna Andersson.com... right up the Nie alley!!!
LOVE IT!!!
I got a pair for my birthday in sixth grade, rainbow stripe ones. I was a little clueless on how you wore them. I knew what they were called, so I put them on, got on the bus and headed for school. I can still remember the look of horror on my two friends faces as I stepped off the bus. I was wearing my rainbow striped leg warmers pulled all the way up to my thighs.
Love leg warmers! Wear them proudly!!
Uhm. I'd like to purchase those orange leg warmers in the picture, please.
The leg warmers I wore in 2nd grade were striped, pink and gray. Oh, and also, awesome!
I truly hope MUSIC from the 80's doesn't make a come back. I'm really not prepared for that.
the leg warmers at the Mall are called Snuggle Luv's....
I need to learn to pull of leg warmers. Oh and in response to your prev post how wonderful that all of the cousins will be raised together. I feel like I am constantally trying to get the cousins together, that they are drifting apart which makes me sad.
Leg warmers are back...whether Chup likes it or not. Enjoy!!!
OH MY GOSH!!! I'm so excited! I remember the days of the leg warmers! Man I wish I had a picture of my old leg warmers, I can't even remember what color they were. My kids have sucked all my brain cells out. I'm so glad you posted about this & that someone mentioned that they have them at Old Navy. My 14 yr. old daughter, who is very into all the latest 80's fashions has been asking for leg warmers for the last 6 months. Well here in sunny AZ you can't find them ANYWHERE. I was hoping they would come out when it got a little cooler. Don't ask me why she was asking for them in our 115 weather, she's crazy! Anyway, thanks for bringing this blast back from the past Courtney! Love you!
There are so many reasons why I have grown to love you - your leg warmer love, just adds to the list!! Because my friend, they are a BIG love of mine too!! LOL. I had rainbow striped ones when I was younger, but I think I will stick to the basic colors, they seem to not attract as much attention...:)
Speaking of the 80's... I woke up this morning with the perfect claw bangs and side wings! The 80's called... they want me back... so, while I'm there, I will pick you up a few new pair of leg warmers in EVERY color and even little Jane some... Heck~ if it's on your blog, I bet the clothing industry will pick up some and start selling them EVERYWHERE again! Do you peg your pants? I love your blog!
I love your blog. Thank-you.
Just can't express my love for Stephanie enough. The Lord knew how many lives would be changed because he changed hers.
If she only knew. She is the best kind of celebrity.
www.xanga.com/candacecg
Check out www.babylegs.com. Now The Chief can have some too!
I like those over-the-knee socks that Target sells, especially when they're on sale. Of course no one sees them because they go under the jeans, not over -- but they'd be cute as all get-out with a skirt.
Ahhh...legwarmers...I think I still have a pair.
Checked out the "Little Travelers" and ordered my kids the Bali DVD so they can learn more about where their Uncle is..Thanks!! It looks great! I'm going to get them the Japan one as well since I lived there briefly as a child and they are fascinated with that idea.
Take Care!! You're going a great job....don't ever doubt that.
I heard that Target has really cute long stripey socks on sale. Buy them and then cut off the feet and stitch around the bottom! Leg warmers!I think you're great courtney!
You are so cute!
I loved your article and laughed. In Arizona they aren't as popular. You go girl
Connie in AZ
Gosh, I'm almost convinced. ;-)
Ear muffs all the way! I think they're far less controversial, LOL!
Hey - I had a cool (or I thought so at the time) blue and white striped pair in the 6th grade. They even had fringe at the top and bottom....haha..makes me laugh just thinking about them. I guess clown wear was cool in the 80's...maybe not? :-)
I'll admit it! I have been a blog stalker....always read it, never comment. I just wanted to offer some leg warmers for her..or whoever, complintary. I make them, so I would just need to know colors or pattern and they'd be on there way. Please let me know..I'd love to do it for her! I don't have a site up yet for the leg warmers, so you can just visit my blog and leave a comment, or email me....
I call them lil legs. :)
You are H I L A R I O U S! Whenever I need a smile or a good laugh I just come to your blog and you cheer me up! Thank you so very much!
Court-
I love it! There is absolutely nothing wrong with leg warmers. My hubby thinks they are sexy with a little pizazz but modest! With the right outfit...if there is such a thing, Im sure you were a stylin! ;)
Hugs my friend-
I love leg warmers, especially on babies and kids. If Jane wants a pair of leg warmers I would love to treat her to some. Have her look at my supply and tell me what she likes best. Look under 'Babylegs' at www.diaperstyle.com. I'll send them out next week. Until them, stay warm. I wish I could wear leg warmers, but I live in AZ and shorts and T's are all I can handle right now.
I spied some for little girls today at Old Navy for $7.50. So, you may not have to spend a fortune to make little Jane's dream come true!
I've always loved that you and your sisters wear skirts year-round (and not just for a three-hour-block on Sunday). I have to admit that I understand how someone in Arizona can pull it off, but now I know the secret to Utah and skirts in the winter. Brilliant!
WOW, those were the days!!! You are so funny! I love the way you write girl!
Hugs and prayers from CA
Haaa! I LOVE this post!
That was cute. You're simply a doll!
I'm so glad you keep this blog, I've never commented before, but I love reading it.
My prayers have been with you & your sweet sister & your whole big family. Take care.
I just got some pink striped ones for my daughter and she loves them! Too bad they weren't in my size (hers are size 18-24 months) :)
Two pairs coming right up!! In the mail tomorrow! :-)
Right after I read this post I found these on Etsy through a friend - http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vl_other_1&listing_id=15155523. They look So cozy!
Love the Flash Dance reference. Made me think of times back in middle school during sleepovers where us girls would belt that tune out. None of us knew the right words and it was ugly, full of passion, but ugly :o)
Oh man, you are taking me back. I remember now the dilemma of wanting to wear certain of my leg warmers that always fell down. Good times.
I always thought it was "what a feelin, (da da dada da dada da) SEEin's believin!" I've been singing the lyrics wrong for like twenty years! hee hee, still a great song...
Please, just promise you will resist any urge to cut off most of the sleeves of your sweatshirts! (Flashdance ring a bell?)... :)...Katie
I can have it all, now I'm dancing for my life.
Take your passion
And make it happen.
Pictures come alive, now I'm dancing through my life.
What a feeling.
ew leg warmers. but YES for sporting them!
but ew. but yea!
