Neglector

"I can't do things the way I used to do them." I lamented to Page the other day.

"Yes you can." She countered.

"No I can't. I used to have zero children and I had all the time in the world to do things. Like make sugar cookies and tan myself and give my face a facial every Saturday. Now, I could do these things but I would have to neglect more than I am willing to bargain."

"But you can do anything you want to do. You can choose to neglect. Don't get stuck in that rut." Page looked at me, eyes glaring seriously. Page hates excuses like I hate advice.

Though I did my best to garner more empathy, in the end I gave up. I could make my fruit tarts on a lazy Sunday afternoon if I were willing to let my living spaces become collateral damage. So I've chosen a life relegated to the painfully easy. Though, I have stopped short of buying the slice-and-dice sugar cookies that come pinched in a tube.

But this morning I proclaimed ENOUGH. There was an announcement that today we'd spend the entire day making sugar cookies. Given nursing breaks, accidental egg shell chips and decorating tragedies I knew we'd be at it all day long. But we weren't going anywhere, and it had been too long since my pinkie pie Kitchenaid made me feel like the investment was worth the cold cash (or, credit card), so cookies we ventured.

I looked at what a day of cookie making would require for necessary neglect. I decided to neglect spontaneously, if it wasn't happening, it wasn't happening.

First though, the kitchen had to be fully cleansed. I started with the dishes. I made Claire help while Ollie and Jane discussed their personal expectations of tomorrow's inauguration. It better be spectacular, they both agreed.

All Retro-plaid laminate countertops were sprayed and kitchen carpet was thoroughly vacuumed. Remember? I have carpet in my kitchen and I hate it. Worse than advice. When all sparkled it was time to head to the store for some ingredients. Only, at this point it was time for The Chief's morning nap, so we had to hurry ourselves. No time for my quick shower.

Neglected: Personal Appearance.

We live close to a corner store where we can buy little groceries for big prices. But I will avoid putting four children into seatbelts and car seats at ANY price, so we bundled up for a short jaunt. Before we left I looked out on our front lawn to check the immediate weather. Sun was out, but from the far reaches of my front yard I could barely make out the flag our scouts had drilled into the frozen ground for Civil Rights Day. Inversion soup, haze up to our hairlines. Gross, but we needed butter.

Neglected: Better judgment.

Half-way to the store I checked the vitals of my troop. Claire and Jane? Fine. Ollie? A red nose. The Chief? After I found him buried beneath seven quilts, two hats and a knitted winter suit stuffed in the stroller he responded with eyeball stimulus. We were braving the inversion just fine, but gravy in a boat it was impossibly cold. Kinda snuck up on me, the whole frozen air molecules in my lungs routine.

Flour, sugar, butter, milk, lime juice and two cans of coconut milk (for peanut sauce, dinner) were purchased. And, like always, I tried to make a joke to the cashier about something, and, like always, the cashier acted like she didn't hear me.

Neglected: Trying to make the cashiers at my local grocery laugh at my jokes.

On the way out I tried to use the ancient cash machine for a couple of twentys so I could pay my underage house keeper. The machine kept flashing: TRYING TO PROCESS YOUR TRANSACTION over and over until all four children were crying in peril.

Neglected: Getting cash at Methuselah's ATM .

Back out. It was so cold. Again, took me by total surprise. Even my toenails were tingly. We crossed the frozen tundra against the haze of an environmental hazard and made it home before The Chief lost a lung.

"My goodness that was cold." I said still in shock (wait, was this story about making sugar cookies?) "I am going to call time and temperature."

"Currently" it told me "it is seven degrees."

Neglected: to remember how unforgiving January can be.

Finally it was onto the cookies. We measured and stirred, cracked and whipped. When dough formed in the belly of pinkie pie we wrapped up the concoction and let it chill for three hours.

In which time I put The Chief down for a nap, rotated laundry and made lunch. Helped Claire produce a Bedouin costume (Daddy introduced The Black Stallion into their lives) and watched as she tamed the Ollie stallion. Listen to Jane read books to a swirmy baby who I continued to nurse throughout the day.

Neglected: a bra. Like they always say, simplify, simplify, simplify.

When the dough was chilled we started to roll and bake. We made hearts for friends, doggie bones for Gigs, butterflies for Mommy and flowers to remind us that spring can't be that far away. SEVEN DEGREES. Claire even went so bold as to bake her name. And with our sugar cookies came three primary-colored vats of glaze so that everything shined and sparkled with the raw sugar drizzled on top.

Neglected: my insistence that Ollie not eat that cookie drowning in green sprinkles.

It wasn't long before our sugar buzz was nothing but a drunken stupor of sweet crystals. Claire let her body roll down the stairs over and over again. Ollie slid on the ground because the use of his legs was too much. Jane was the only pioneer who glazed and glazed until her eyes matched. The afternoon sky was saying good bye from our kitchen window as we finished off the last batch.

One full day dedicated to making sugar cookies isn't a bad way to spend a cold-bordering-unhealthy day. Page was right, I can do anything I want to, as long as I am discreet about my negligance. Speaking of which, is that red and blue glaze crusted into my carpet?

Soon to neglect: carpet on my dang kitchen floors.

Gross.

I love sugar cookies. I have a great collection of sugar cookie recipes- may I have yours? We must neglect some things in life so that we can participate in the things that make us really happy, and believe me, sugar cookies make me happy.

yum maybe I will have to neglect sometime this week. I think you might have just started a new pregnancy craving. I will let you know that my neighbor(bishops wife) and I were talking about the things we neglect today. And we feel that neglect in the name of fun, me-time, memories, food or anything else that I or you or her deem important for the day is NOT neglect!

I have to admit I cringed when the "carpet on the kitchen floor" came up... ICK. I cannot even imagine. I SINCERELY feel for you!

It is so easy to talk ourselves out of doing things. I know I do it way too often. Love that you went for it. And I love that you had a great warm weekend before this bitter cold day today. Just read both posts. Love your writing, as always. Thanks for sharing.

Ack! We have the same kitchen cabinets. I think even the knobs are the same.
But I have Nike swooshes (or boomerangs, if you like) on my counters.
And no carpet on my floor.
And no sugar cookies. :(

It's not neglect - it's choosing the better part!

Carpets in kitchens are almost as bad as carpets in bathrooms. Our current house had thirty year old carpet in the master bath. I didn't know it had been there that long until we'd lived with it for a year. I promptly ripped it out as soon as I found out. Still grosses me out just thinking about it - thirty years worth of bathroom gunk on that stuff. There should be a law against it (and carpets in kitchens too)!

Melanie said...

I love the story.

And I hate to ask this (but I'm going to since that's how much I want it), but could you share your recipe for peanut sauce? I've been looking for a good one...

Good for you! I will take the advice of Page and neglect something tomorrow!

I love it. I say a day well spent. The inversion is horrible. Just horrible.

Other than that, all you have to do tomorrow is put on a bra and its improvement over a good day, making tomorrow great too!

Liz said...

Funny, this. I was just remarking to my husband (while watching 24, sitting with piles of unfolded laundry on my couch, and checking on my four-month-old babe for the umpteenth time) "Why can't I get it together???" You have provided the answer to my prayers. Selective neglect. I like.
Thanks, Courtney, for your humor and wisdom. I love that you boldly proclaim your love of nursing The Chief. As much as having a zealous little nursling requires neglecting many things, I too love the time and closeness with my girl. Thanks for offering daily inspiration of what motherhood can be.

We lived in a place that had carpet in the kitchen for over 5 years. Why oh why, carpet in the kitchen. The only sweeping to be done in that place was our one small bathroom.

Love your cookie day. Seven degrees is cold. Nose hair tingly cold.

*~Mandie~* said...

When we first purchased out home it had carpet in the dining area and in our small bathroom (which is worse than the kitchen) I had it ripped up and replaced with "kid friendly" flooring. I am so glad, I have 2 messy boys! I can never make tasty sugar cookies. They are always so bland. But I make some DELICIOUS pumpkin cookies. You neglected nothing! What you did was very important and neccessary every now and then. A day of homemade goodies is a day those precious kiddos will remember and re-live w/ their children in the future and it will all be thanks to you!

P. S. You should post your sugar cookie recipe!! Please :) :)

It is so stinking hot here, we have to hibernate inside otherwise we'd melt. Tomorrow we're going to hibernate and spend the day making and decorating gingerbread. I don't see any neglect here - just hours of memories being stowed away for future happiness!
I can't get over that you hoover BEFORE you bake - I put off cleaning the kitchen floor for weeks on the basis that it will only get mucked up again when we bake! In fact it's the best incentive I know to keep baking - to avoid having to clean the kitchen floor! (how's that for expert reasoning?) t.x

Aaaaaah carpetted kitchens...it brings it all back to me. Our first home. Our first kitchen. Orange and chocolate brown carpet on the floor. Caramel brown "wood" cabinetry. Chocolate brown tiles on the benchtops so that all the food could get stuck in the grout. The oven of death....shooting flames out the front whenever you turned the gas on. I miss that kitchen.....actually.....no....I don't.

Love to you all,

we lived for five years and two babies turned toddler to almost big kids with carpet in the kitchen AND the powder room. we complained to each other (and apologized to all our guests) about it every single day. i refused to do anything about because i wanted to wait until we did a whole kitchen make-over for the wow factor. but this summer my husband snapped and just started ripping and ripping until we found that under that layer of carpet, was another layer of different carpet. cute. and under that layer some kind of vintage tile. and then a thick layer of funky glue. finally, we made it down to the hardwood. victory.
you'll appreciate your new kitchen floor (hopefully, in less than five years) so much more because you lived through the carpet. power to the carpeted kitchen wives and mothers. i feel your pain.

What you need to do is find a hour or so I know with a nursing baby that almost sounds impossible, but go get a pedicure!!!!!!Girl, I love those and they help me not feel so neglected. Take a companion so if you need to take the chief you'll have back up. This is what my sis in law and I do!!! It works i promise!! Love you much. wish I lived closer and I'd come over this morning at let you go indulge in that pedicure, and bring my spot shot and clean that carpet in your kitchen. It works wonders. but dab don't rub. Yes i had carpet in my kitchen in one of our houses. we even had it on the walls. WHY????
Hope you have a good day sweetie. love ya

Wow - there are always so many comments and I never read them all (I wouldn't read my own if I weren't writing it!). I too, had carpet in my kitchen for a time and HATED vacuuming my KITCHEN. Through near tears I managed to convince my husband and landlord that tile was necessary to my sanity. Once they had agreed, I quit vacuuming and may have even spilled chicken juice on that carpet. We'll pretend it wasn't on purpose. :) I sure hope you get to change THAT aspect of your retro house soon.

And sugar cookies rock! Especially with sprinkles.

I love baking sugar cookies! My favorite is cinnamon rolls and it takes all day! A mothers life is full of neglects on days like these. But isn't it worth the memories. I like a clean house too, and sometimes I have to really tell myself that it will be okay to not do a, b, or c, so that I can spend time with my kids. It is hard but so worth it.

As for the carpet in the kitchen, been there done that. My husband once dropped a glass bottle of syrup on the carpeted kitchen floor and the bottom broke right off. I had a syrup ring FOREVER!

I wanted to run up and give you a hug, say how amazing I thought you were, how much I adore your blog, what a talented writer you are, and tell you that I know your beautiful sis-in-law Lindsay. But, my insecurities set in and I figured I should give you and your family your privacy. Instead, I settled with just giving you a great big smile:) So, I am now telling you all these things I wished I would have in person! Oh, and btw - your baby is even cuter in person (if that is even possible). No wonder you want to eat him!

Kim said...

This certainly made my day. I have been thinking to myself since Christmas..."I NEED to make sugar cookies with the kids!" I feel inspired, but it will have to wait for another day. I just cleaned three bathrooms, and that is much too much.

Hugs. Thanks for making me smile today.

Maybe it's just sugar-obsessed me, but I cherish memories of cookie-baking days from long ago. I bet you have created a wonderful memory the kids will carry with them a long time.

It's so sad that your checkout person is so cold since so many of us on the internet fall over ourselves laughing at your jokes every day. Maybe one of us should apply for her job.

If ever there is a reason to neglect, then cookies are that reason. Any kind of cookies....well as long as they don't have coconut in them, that is.

Hmmm...trying again as I don't know if my comment went into the moderation queue or into the ether...

I've been jonesing to make sugar cookies forever. Holidays are the time! (Halloween, Christmas, V-day...) and now I know MLK day too! Yum!!! It's about time I seriously neglect something else and make cookies! :)

Funny that you would post this on a day when my son really REALLY wanted to make cookies with me. I told him we would make them on Saturday and he insisted this IS Saturday. I promised him oreos instead for today, then came into the office to go on the computer and see how Nienie and CJane were doing today. I have neglected my son's need for cookies too long now! It's oreos time, buddy! (Thanks for the reminder, CJane!)

I think I have been neglecting things since Christmas was over. I don't know why but I just can't get my 2009 life put back together. And I only have one child! I think all of us have to trade in some things for other things. At least you had a fun day though (minus the bitter cold and the sugar in the carpet)! :)

Thank you.

Do you know how much filth could be living in that carpet? Those kids could get ringworm, or ebola.

You know what you should do? NOT GIVE THEM RINGWORM.

Also, if you are using my Top Secret Sugar Cookie Recipe, you are not allowed to give it out to people, not even if they beg. They can go beg at the altar of Granny B's or something.

Your children will not remember your carpeted kitchen, nor your sticky counters nor your sugary flooring. What they will remember is making sugar cookies with their mom/aunt and the wonderful memories that comes with this. It's all about priorities and you have your priorities in the right order for sure!

I quit worrying about my kitchen carpet the day I accidentally dumped a dutch oven full of frying oil (from fried chicken)onto mine. I watched it grow into a huge, round, greasy puddle. I blotted up as much as I could and told my husband I wouldn't do one more thing to keep the floor clean until I got tile. I think that only took a year. Now I'm a grandma (with a painted wood floor, I just repaint it when it gets too yucky.) Yesterday I took care of three of the grandkids. I count myself lucky that we had only two nosebleeds and one bloody lip. Your're doing the very best you can - which is all any of us can expect to do. You are not alone.

Oh yes can I relate to the carpet in the kitchen. My kitchen currently sports dark navy industrial carpet. I dream of the day of getting a washable floor but secretly know that I won't wash them as much as I think I would. Just having the option to wash them is what I am going for.

UGH! All of the blog is wonderful and other people have identified that...but I want to talk for a minute about CARPETED KITCHENS! Our house came with one too (and real wood paneling in the basement). In fact, up until we ripped out some carpet from the bathroom in May, the entire house was carpeted. Who are these people? Do they never spill? What on earth inspires someone to carpet a kitchen? I'm waiting for mushrooms to grow out of mine. I dream of Carpet One whisking in and moving the kitchen and stove and ripping it out and replacing with some solid flooring...my dream isn't even picky about tile vs vinyl vs linoleum. I just want to be able to get flour off the floor with a rag and not panic when my three-year-old pours his own juice.

Aaahh, the curse of motherhood...you remember all the things you didn't get done and that the house was a mess.

this is my first comment on your blog- although I've checked in from time to time, and have enjoyed it thoroughly!

I'm right there with the selective neglect, so nicely put, and so true!

I also just wanted to say that I've been inspired by you and your family, I am also a Nie reader, and love to hear about the love and service you all show to one another. It truly is magnificent, the power and strength that comes from serving and loving so deeply. And thank you for sharing, so openly your testimony- if not always in word, it truly shows in your deeds. Thank you.

tjhirst said...

I often read your posts but NEGLECT to leave you a comment. It seems like with 175 others I ought to neglect that on your behalf.

But this sugar cookie episode is exactly why I've neglected making them for many years. Last week, I inspired my daughter to do it instead. She's nine and old enough. I learned a great lesson from her--we can make just half a batch and be much happier.

At Home said...

When our children were small, we lived in a happy 'selected-neglect' state. Now that they are grown and wonderful and raising our precious grandchildren, I can do the things at the bottom of my priority list with calm and a smile.

Because guess what? After they are grown...you are still alive. Save the 'stuff' for then. Love your little ones now...that will last forever. The Stuff never does. Let the storybooks and cookies begin!

Sara said...

that was wonderful.

I'm not really writing about your blog, but Nie's, and how sweet to hear from her yet painful to read of her daily agony. Since we can't give her hugs, please, gently, give her extra for us.

I can't stop thinking about how much I would hate carpet in my kitchen- if I had my OWN kitchen... If I were you I would let the kids go nuts and destroy it, then you could complain to Chup that you really can't live with the carpet all ripped and torn to pieces, and he could then make your life blissfully complete my putting lino/tile/hardwood/laminate/your choice of solid materials down so you could have a real kitchen floor in place of the crud catcher carpet :D This is how my mind works...

I have been reading your blog for a while but have never commented due to the bagillions (yes that is a word in my dictionary, you should use it. It make you feel special) of comments you get, I figured mine owuld be lost in thw crowd. However, I must say you are AMAZING. I tried to make cookies iwth my 4 and 2 year old and after licked dough, smashed cutouts, I neglected to bring my patience. BUT, I will prevail and do it again. One quick question-how do you make that oh so yummy looking glaze? I have the most fabulously moist recipe, but have never quite got the right topping for it. Would you be willing to share your secret? Wow that was a mouth full. I guess I had to make up for lack of comments!

Gloria said...

I am a new reader and a no longer young mother....Three sons and three daughters are mine and so far13 grandchildren. My philosophy was what I called "selective neglect" and it has served me well through the years. Every so often you just need to make sugar cookies! Kitchen carpet is NOT a good thing.

Hess said...

I am a sugar cookie fanatic!!!! There are never enough sugar cookies in the world. Is there anything more fun? You get to roll, cut, decorate, and eat!! I have gone through a lot of recipes and would have to say this is the best by far that I have ever tried. They turn our like the round soft pink cookies with sprinkles, uhmm.

BEST SUGAR COOKIE RECPIE

1 c. sour cream, 1 c butter, 1 tsp vanilla, 6 c flour, 2 c sugar, 3 eggs, 1 tsp lemon juice, 1 tsp soda, and 1/2 tsp salt. Bake at 400 for 6-8 minutes.

make sure you beat everything except the flour on med for at least 3 min. That makes the cookies extra soft and fluffy!!

now you need to go make another day of making sugar cookies. Go gettem girl.

A perfect example of how we must taste the bitter (no bra, no jokes, no money) so that we can taste the sweet (oh-so-pretty cookies)!
