Today was the last drip of summer.
Tomorrow is officially autumn.
We toasted the season adieu with goblets of Kristian Regal peach sparkler before dinner. (I don't think I've ever tasted a better drink in my life.)
Feeling the change in the air, I spent some time in my neighbor's wondrous garden this weekend. The Chief rolled on his stomach like a snake, scarfing up all the dark raspberries dangling from the vine. We moved through peach and apple trees, past reaching grapevines and around colorful pepper plants. Food was everywhere. It was a God-given, man-harvested, earth-meets-heaven natural factory. For the first time, I understood how dreadful it was to be cast out of the Garden of Eden. How I want to go back.
"It is beautiful." I told my neighbor.
"Now it's getting close to the end." She said, looking towards a line of stubs where tall corn once grew.
I could see what she meant. Everything was heavy. The apple trees were being pulled down by the weight of their creation. Giant peaches sagged their way to gravity off tired limbs. Squash begged to be picked from the ground below. Abundance ending.
Page and I like to talk about the seasons as they pertain to a woman's life--as a human being, a mother, a wife, a divine entity. Spring is about youth and planting seeds--the seeds of character and knowledge. Summer is for working, weeding and cultivating those seeds--while fighting the heat and the sweat. Fall is for enjoyment in the harvest. Picking the best of the heavy fruit and tasting the flavor. When winter comes it brings with it quiet redemption, a peace of self. Best of all, after the fight of change, winter promises purity.
This summer we cultivated our tastes. We saw art in London together. We took The Chief on a food-rampage in the desert of Arizona (our tastebuds will never be the same again). We weeded together in the front flowerbeds while Dad mowed the lawn. We worked on our kitchen floor (with the help of my gracious in-laws). And we took a trip to the Pacific Coast which was slightly peppered with my pregnancy sickness. At the beginning of the season we asked for it to be fruitful. It was.
But now here is fall. And my hope is that we will sit a little more still--our heads full of fine summer memories. Stay out in the backyard longer to appreciate Chup's hard-fought lawncare--most of which was done in the dead heat--before it becomes frosted. Marinate in the sun while we can, until it offers only shorter days. In the newly floored kitchen, we will eat the pears, peppers and cherry tomatoes my neighbor bagged for me from her ample cropping. Cook meals inspired by the food we ate in Arizona. Soak in hot water tubs (rembering the ocean) with a promise of warm pajamas after drying off. Ask for less, be grateful for more.
God has given us an incredible planet. One that moves through space and creates movement in our surroundings, making us beings of transition. Even so, I always find myself fighting the changing intervals. It is not until I feel safe inside the adjustment (light patterns, weather, landscape) I can finally tranquilize. Tonight, with a peach sparkler in hand, I accepted the incoming season.
A toast to summer, and a welcome to autumn!

60 Pieces of Opinion:
...hooray for Autumn!

Oh, if only. I miss fall. It's my favorite time of the year--the smells, the leaves, football, scarves, sweaters...I love everything about it. We don't get fall in AZ. We get hot and less hot, at least that's how it feels right now. Talk to me in November. I might be more cheerful then. Until then, please step on a crackly, crinkly leaf for me would you?
welcome, indeed! i just wrote an ode to fall the other day on my blog, celebrating my love of mellowcreme pumpkins, among other things, that only this time of year brings.
and i even made a batch of choc. chip cookies and thought, i should drop a dozen off to cjane. but i didn't—i wasn't sure if it would make you puke or not.
CJane~
It is suppose to be 104 tomorrow here in good ol AZ. I can't imagine living anywhere else but Utah sounds AMAZING right now!
It still feels like summer. I don't know if we ever get that autumn feeling of baking, raking leaves, etc.
So please keep posting (with pics!) so I can live vicariously through you and your seasons of Utah.

I miss fall. I didn't realize that would happen until I now live in a place without fall. The crispness in the air, the crinkling of leaves, first frost. The smell. Fall is all about the senses and my senses miss it.
Beautiful post, beautiful description of the stages of life. Enjoy the abundance of growth from your summer.
Here is Australia its spring but its nearly as hot as summer. I envy that your seasons are so different from each other. We tend to be mostly hot or warm... even winter is barely cold some days. Spring is my favourite season, i love natures food!
Having grown up in Ireland with its cold wet winters and its cold wet summers I now live in Australia with its warm mild winters and its HOT HOT HOT summers.
I still cant work out which I prefer but I do find it magical as the seasons shift from the old into the new and you get to look forward to the changes on their way. For us it is a case of getting ready to slap on the sunscreen!
I dont think we had a summer here in NJ. It was cool and damp all summer long. Now it doesnt seem quite so fun to have fall! I am wishing for a little more summer, then I will Love fall.
Hopefully this will be the most beautiful fall ever and then I wont miss our summer at all!
I love reading your blog. Reading it today made me think of this song fireflies by owl city. The way you and your sister talk of fall sounds so lovely...makes us want pick and move out of florida to place where we can experience the season badly. Congratulations!! may the little seed inside of you continue growing healthy and strong.
It is still summer here, hot and humid but the nights are finally cooling just enough to enjoy being able to sit out back on the deck and ruminate about the day. In the fall, it becomes slightly less hot, moving towards the mid-70's slowly, with less humidity. It is usually mid-December at the earliest that we start to have cold. I do miss the seasons but I do so love it here in the southeast.
I started reading your blog because of Nie, I wanted updates. Now one of the first things I do in the morning is come to your blog, not for anyone else, but for you. Your words, thoughts, ideas, musings, are second to none. Your idea of women is almost magical. I love your blog. Thank you. Thank you for what you give all of us.
Ask for less, be grateful for more! May I use this phrase? its beautiful! I love the colors and the changes fall brings. Breathtaking!
That was just beautifully written -you really do have a way with words :) Here in Michigan we experience a spectacular fall as well. The trees are brilliant with reds, yellows and oranges, the mornings are foggy and cool giving way to warm, sunny afternoons - I LOVE fall. Can't imagine living anywhere where I couldn't experience the changing seasons - it's magical.
I will lift my "glass" to toast my favorite season. Cheers!
Oh Autumn. How I love the crisp cool air, the smells. And all of the comfort food!
that was lovely! you spoke once of wanting to give your children something special in the place they live...well i would love to give my children that! thanks for sharing it!
I love fall too! Have you seen Nikki McClure's paper cuts/calendars/prints? Your paragraph on seasons reminds me of her (very awesome) prints.
Fall is still not upon us, here in the red rocks of Dixie. You made me yearn for colored leaves and chilly mornings!!! I was up your direction this last weekend and it was beautiful! Enjoy it for the rest of us!
ahhh...enjoy it while it lasts. I woke up to an inch of snow and 24 degrees this morning. My nine year old son and I had to launch a massive search for winter gloves...sigh...
Beautiful post Courtney! Hope you're feeling better these days and yeah for fall!
Beautifully said!
We're both lucky to live in places that know all four seasons. (I'm in your neighboring Idaho.)
Summer is over...for you. It's still going in Houston. And I envy you all the beautiful colors of autumn. Maybe someday I will see them.
But I can be grateful that I don't have to deal with a harsh winter. A few winter's nights may bring freezing temps, but I won't have to face them by morning.
I look forward to hearing of autumn through you.
Oh - I'm so excited that fall is finally here (or about to be anyway). I can hardly wait for the changing leaves and the crisp, cool air! :)
"Ask for less, but be grateful for more." Love that. I need to write that down.
I've never even thought of commenting before (not that I always could have) but that was an incredibly well-written piece. I actually felt the earth spinning and moving through space, whirling us into Autumn. Thank you.
Beautifully put! We had a very short and strange summer here in NYC, nonetheless I am so happy to welcome fall! Central Park looks lovely in its fall colors! The city always seems more relaxed and cheerful during the fall/winter months!
This was a good post to remind me of all the good things of autumn when what I was really thinking this morning (before I read this)was "oh great -- we're that much closer to winter" lol
I should actually mention that it's still in the mid 80's here so It's not really hit me yet...
a beautiful post. thank you. I needed to read that as I have too, been torn by the inbetween. (how do i decorate?, what do i wear?) I love the analogy of seasons to a womens life.
Ask for less...be grateful for more. That will be my new motto. (I need it in vinyl) Thank you.
We just got our first snowflake in Denver yesterday. I love the fall, the colors, the cool nights, a fire in the firepit. But let the snow wait awhile please. Fall is fickle in the Rocky Mountains!
While I rarely comment (despite reading for years) the wording in those last two paragraphs was just too perfect not to compliment you. Beautifully put. And what's more, you're inspiring me to reflect back on all the bounty this summer has brought me--I've been focusing too much on the fact that I didn't do as much canning as I meant to, and the garden wasn't harvested as regularly as it should have been, and I didn't prune my flowering bushes when they needed it...and not taking into account that no, we didn't have time for those because this summer brought us our third baby. What's a few lost tomatoes compared to that?
Although the change between summer and fall here in Southern California is minimal, it is still very welcome!
Beautiful post, CJane. Definitely one of my all-time favorites!
I'm hoping for double digits in AZ today instead of triple like yesterday. It still feels like summer here... most of the year. I loved hearing about autumn though. Thanks.
I need to tell your sister, Stephanie, something about her post today. Ollie's great-grandfather, Harold Thomas (my uncle) did the same thing Ollie is doing... when he was a little boy, his dog 'Jack', died. From then on he insisted that he be called Jack. I always called him 'Uncle Jack' and didn't know his name was Harold for years. Funny Ollie would pick the same name and with similar circumstances. Will you tell Stephanie for me? She didn't have any place to comment.
PS- congratulations on the pregnancy... I do have some ideas to overcome morning sickness, it helped my daughter who was in and out of the hospital with dehydration from morning sickness. Facebook me if you want to know... I'm one of your million friends on facebook. =D
Fall is officially here tomorrow...but the forecast is predicting near 90. I'm so ready for a cool crisp 65. That could just be because my pregnant incubator can't stand the heat any longer, but really it's just because I adore fall...well maybe it's a bit of both.
Such a beautiful post.
Best post ever.....
Thanks so much for this post! I needed the reminder about how a woman's life has different seasons! Your post was beautiful!
Beautifully written.
Lovely post... Your peach drink reminds me of a peach wine my friends and I made homemade last year. But I think yours is more like a drink we have called "Clearly Canadian." It's so good! And I'm happy that fall is here too! I love the cool, crisp nights.
Girl, It's official. You really do need to write a book.
What a beautiful post. I am going to post the paragraph about the seasons of a woman's life beside my desk. Thank you for giving me such lovely thoughts to 'chew on.'
What a beautiful analogy - the seasons of a woman's life. Love it! And love autumn! Reading your post made me doubly excited for it!
love this, beautifully said
...and you know what I'm looking forward to most about said fall time? Cider doughnuts. I'd toast to that.
I had never thought about the Garden of Eden in that manner, but today you gave me new insight, THANKS! I too love fall and like many of your readers live in AZ where we have only two seasons, hot and hotter, and from all indications hotter is going to last longer than normal this year...LOL
I miss crinkly crunchy leaves, with all their glorious colors, fall up Provo Canyon...yea I miss that also, but most of all I miss the smells...and being able to watch HS football with a sweatshirt on. Thanks Courtney for all your insight, I too started reading you because of Nie but I look forward to your daily thoughts...like today "Ask for less, be grateful for more!" That is profound
Thanks
Beautiful and eloquent post. It captured my thoughts exactly. Hello fall, I will miss you Summer.
I agree with everyone that wrote that this was a beautifully written post. And my favorite line was "Ask for less, be grateful for more" also. Thanks for the insights you shared! :)
Kristian Regal peach sparkler - - Ahhhhhh - - the best item at IKEA!!! :) SOOOOOO worth the 40 minute drive!!
You're so lovely.
And suddenly i want to eat a peach.
I posted a pic of myself today on my blog b/c my sister tells me she loves how you always do self-portraits.
Hopefully I can share in your loveliness :)
A beautiful post! Fall is my favorite time of the year.
-FringeGirl
I love the changing of the season. Somehow it makes me feel changed too.

Such a lovely post, it captures all the bounty of the season, in your very personal voice. Thank you
Only you could make it so poetic Love you for that
reading your thoughts on the seasons of a woman's life was touching. Summer is by far my favorite season. The working, the sunshine, the free-ness of it all. We're in the summer of our life now, and sometimes I forget to soak up the sunshine moments everyday. Can I quote you on my blog? You have started a sea of thoughts that places me somewhere in the midst of tears and utter bliss.
Absolutely beautifully stated. What a lovely way to remind me to be grateful and to allow autumn some splendor, instead of moping about how summer is leaving or winter is coming.
so glad you put what i was feeling into words. so beautiful!
Thank you. I have been having a rough week and reading your words has really help put things in perspective.
"Ask for less, be grateful for more."
This made me tear up. Thanks, cjane.
where did you purchase that???? i have been searching for that brand drink for like 4 years. my local grocery store had it once and i bought 5 bottles of it. The berry is yummy too!
love your blog!
We have just come into Spring here in Australia...it feels like a light switch has been turned on in my body...I appreciate Winter and all that it gives but rejoice when it's over!!
Love your comments about the importance of the Seasons and how they relate to us personally, our cycles; spiritually etc. thanks!
