Today I'd like to blog about one downfall.
Our son, The Chief, believes he has two mothers. I am his task-oriented, disciplinarian mom, and Lucy is the fun mom. When Lucy is around I am barely mentioned in my son's behavior. As for her daughter Betsy, The Chief has come to the conclusion that her existence is to serve his need to poke, roll and body slam another human being. Lucy and Betsy make up my son's perfect team of excitement and thrill.
As far as The Chief understands, he is part of their family too. Immediate family.
Per proof, I show you outtakes from Chup's photoshoot with Andrew, Lucy and Betsy this last Saturday. The point was to capture life in Betsy's nursery for their annual family Christmas card. The challenge was to explain to our son why he wasn't included in their family photograph.
"This is Betsy's mommy and daddy." I explained to The Chief utilizing a mix of small talk and hand gestures. "You stay over here [on this side of the camera] with your mommy and daddy."
But he did not like this idea--as his sneaky tactics attest:

Ah well.
What are you going to do?

44 Pieces of Opinion:
Sneaky monkey. It's like that Kleenex commercial... he's just trying out moms, but I bet when it comes down to it, you're the only one that fits... every time.
Something completely unrelated:
You know what I always think when I see pics on your and Nie's blog? How colourful your life is. Quite literally. You're family is colourful. I love it.
Oh and the Chief?
He's just cute!
That boy is the cutest!
Oh my sweet goodness. He is a sneaky one isn't he. Perhaps he will be a Director when he grows up so he can tell people how it should be done. Love the photos!
mmmm...take him away and close the door so they can finish the shoot in peace? Just an idea.
priceless!!!!! LOL
Lucy and family are perfectly adorable! Betsy is just scrumptious!
THe Cheif, however is all you and I LOVE these kinds of posts that show you both off. Your the best Courtney!
Totally off topic:
I LOVE that Lucy pastes bows in Betsys hair. I was the last of four and the only girl and my mom did this to make extra sure people knew I was a girl since I was born with a bald head. The pink lacy dresses weren't enough I guess.
And I think The Chief just knows he is darn cute and should be in all pictures no matter who else is in them
That is friggin HIL-AR-IOUS!
What a cute boy!
Soooo cute.
LOVE Betsy's nursery ~ love the wallpaper ~ love the red chair ~ love the pics.
What a beautifuly family you have=)
What a darling pic of Andrew, Lucy & Bets:)
Beezer doesn't look to keen on the whole situation.
Oh! I love that little bald head! You are blessed to have your sisters near. Treasure it! I lost my older sis 2 years ago to cancer and my younger sister lives seven hours away! Sister time is precious!
Lucy and Betsy are such an adorable mother/daughter pair! (I actually think the Chief adds an indefinable somthing to those pictures that you might not want to leave out...)
that's both hilarious and adorable. we also live close to my whole family, and all of the cousins thought they were interchangable within families when they were small. it's great! we can love on, holler at, have fun with and discipline any of five kids and they are fine with it. yay! :)
Love it. We got cousin love going on over here too...
5 sisters (with kids) all living within miles...seriously it is the best.
I completely understand the two mama thing too..OUr kids are truly lucky.
(and us sisters as well b/c we all have each other every. single. day!)
love the pics!
So cute!
Wow! I love Lucy's wall paper!!!!! Ok...she seriously needs to start blogging too.
Lucy's a babe.
That nursery is gorgeous, as is your son, very cute!!
Where did Lucy get that flower in her hair?? So cute!
Hmm, I'd pick the second one down. It really brings out Andrews eyes.
I am swooning over Betsy's room. Lucy is so popular with the little boys, she is so darling, it's really not the chiefs fault.
That is very funny and very cute.
I have a brother in Draper, a sister in Cedar hills, one in Orem, and one in Provo, (in fact she is in your stake) and I wish they were closer! You are SO lucky to have family - lots of them - right around the corner!
Lucy is sure darling and so is that little boy of yours!
I think that last pic is perfect if you just take The Chief's head and put it where the top of Andrew's is meant to be. I'd send that sucker out in a jiffy! Happy Christmas!
that is hilarious because I go through the same thing with MY son although it's with my sister IN LAW which makes it very difficult for me to digest. I do not even exist when his aunt is around. sniff sniff. She is amazing though so I completely understand where it's coming from but I just want to ask him, "what did I ever do to you except give birth to you, nurse you, and wash your bum everyday!??" oh well...
Ah, the buzz. You're killin' me. Love it!
could Lucy be any cuter???!!!! you nelson gals are ALL beauties.
So once upon a time (3? 4? years ago) I worked at the MTC with a Lucy Clark. As I read your blog, I often wonder, is it the same Lucy? Sometimes I'm convinced it is, sometimes convinced she's not. My Lucy Clark did have brown hair and freckles and was seriously one of the most fun people. Ever. I LOVED her. She gave me rides to work all the time (hooray for cool friends like that) and taught in the classroom next door. If my friend Lucy is your sister Lucy (which I just don't think she is, despite those pictures in which she look just like her), than you are a lucky girl! And tell her Carly (Torgerson) says hello :)
But since I'm pretty sure she's not... you can just tell your sister that I think she has a rad chair.
First time commenter, but have followed your blog for the last year.
Oh wow, that is too funny! You can see Lucy's husband's expressions.....priceless! And you can see your son's delight at getting in the pic, LOL.
Perhaps this will be a good thing when he hits the terrible twos...you can send him to his other family:)
I love how your brother in laws face changes, thus reflecting his defeat in the "family" photo opps.
That is awesome!
I have to say, Andrew looks THRILLED in these pix! (oh, and we should ALL be so blessed to have 2 awesome "Moms" as The Chief!).
Oh, I love you. This post made me smile. (don't be scared that an absolute stranger said she loved you. It's late on the east coast, okay? I'm a bit wired..)
I am reminded of SNL Weekend Update when Fred Armisen is playing the blind mayor of NYC and, after his segment, he ambles unguided through the studio and in front of cameras. It makes me laugh. This also makes me chuckle.
SEE see?!! wall paper IS Cool! I keep wanting to do a textured wall paper(pretty one) but everyone keeps telling me no! Adding depth and charater to a wall is not a bad thing in my head. thank you for showing me that wall paper is still awesome.
Um... Love the wallpaper! Is that Cath Kidston?
You guys are all so funny and cute! Merry Christmas!
The nursery is so beautiful! Isn't the Chief such a lucky guy to have so many adoring fans?
Just curious if that is an antique bed. I am not pregnant, but am longing to be. Some things are slowing us down. But, someday I want an antique bed. Is it safe? I don't know anyone that has one to ask. Could you be of assistance? : ) Thanks. Jill
p.s. what cute pics!
Gotta love the little rascal.
I don't know if you read all your comments or not but I just want to tell you a little something. :) I love love love that there is a little baby in your life named Betsy. You see, that's my name too and I have only ever met two people in my life with this name. They were both in their eighties. I love it. And she is going to love it too. It's so cool that you call her Bets. I can always tell if I will become friends with someone depending on if they call me Bets. But she will also have people calling her Becky, Bethany, Betty....maybe even a Bertha. Haha. Anyway...I just wanted to tell you that I have really liked the name and I know she will too. :) Merry Christmas. :)
he's just trying out moms, but I bet when it comes down to it, you're the only one that fits... every time.
