Five Photographs in Five Days: Day Two

When I was about 16 years old
I decided to start questioning my parents for procedures they forced upon me in the past (sounds about right, doesn't it?) Like for instance, the bowl cut:

Why Mom? Why?

(And why did you let baby Lucy spit up on my first grade class photo? I get no respect!)

But my mom has always held the same response, formed in her internal opinion-generating-office, "I just liked you better that way."

Which is a response I never understood until I birthed my own child who came out sprouting hobo hair. A cropping of hair molecules so defiant and wrong, it attracted its own sphere of sticky things and made me forever pick at it. In short, my son's hair made me look like a bad mother.

Exhibit A:

See that soft tuft in the back? You'd think it was charming until it reminded you of a wanton bird's nest with intentions of permanent residence. (Although I am sure this is just a phase of baby hair--a temporary fix until the real stuff grows in.)

I started noticing my adoration of The Chief's adorable face was often diminished by his directionless hair. When we put him in hats he became many times cuter (something I formerly thought not possible!) And cute is important at our house, I disclaim.

So on Saturday we put our son in the tub with lots of toys and I with my camera and Chup with his razor, buzzed away at the The Chief's feathers we once called hair.

Exhibit B:

About half way around we discovered that our son can indeed pull off the punk look, and considered stopping there.

Exhibit C:

But no, we'll wait for his turn at sixteen to decide that for himself. We carried on.

Exhibits D & E:

When all was shaved and sheared, I looked at my child and saw a small trace of my former nemesis--his overgrown baby hair--in short collections on his head. Here was my beautiful baby, I could see his face again because I wasn't getting caught up in in the confusion of his coif. Simplicity had returned.

Exhibit F:

I don't want to say I love him more now with his shorter hair, but I think I might. Even Chup remarked, "I think he is actually happier this way." This coming after The Chief discovered he likes us to rub his head, as you are want to do with any buzzed head offered in your direction. I actually think The Chief's hair was complicating our relationship because things are so much happier around here since the cut. I now get kissed seven times more daily with his open-mouth-I-want-to-devour-you style of affection. I mean, from The Chief (although if those kisses were from Chup I'd not complain) and his developing oedipal complex.

To my mother, I now understand. Mark this as the first Now I Get Why She Did That realizations to come. The bowl cut for her, is like the buzz cut for me. And if at age sixteen The Chief reads and asks, "Why the buzz cut Mom? Why?" I'll respond with a familiar phrasing:

I just liked you better that way.

ZOMG THIS IS SO CUTE. Your son is adorable on a normal day, but with the buzz cut he is almost edible he's so cute!

Kim said...

He does look adorable! I have found that I, too, prefer... actually 3 of my sons this way. And it made the baby (who is actually 2 1/2) look like a baby again *and* all grown up, though I'm not sure how that was achieved exactly...

Bonnie said...

I love the bowl cut! Priceless!

Elizabeth said...

I'm too distracted by the collar on your shirt, the striped sweater over that and the overalls over that to worry about the bowl cut. But you sure were cute! This is a sweet post and The Chief is just so darn cute with or without hair.

So well written.

We too do the buzz cut at this house. Every 6 weeks or so, Ingram boys hair is shorn by their daddy dearest. Tear ensue because Son One is convinced that his ears are going to be cut off just like his hair. Son Two just sits down and takes it like a man.

One time it was apparently quite short because a lady at the grocery store asked me if Jack had cancer.

lukeandjack said...

For the last (almost) 4 years, we have done the buzzzzzz. Right now we are growing both our boys hair out just to see what happens since we've never grown it past a few milimeters. So far, I do have to say that short is way easier. What's with this new thing called, bed head?

if you wanted to snack on him before, i just don't know how you'll ever restrain yourself now.

God bless c jane doesn't eat the chief for breakfast.

Lisa B. said...

The bowl cut. OMG. AWESOME.

soybeanlover said...

You looked adorable!!

We buzz the boys heads every summer, with the humidity hair is just gross. Plus we can tell what time of year our pics were taken by looking at hair length. Hope the Chief keeps lovin' it! His hair will grow back fuller too.

Michelle said...

Gosh, he couldn't be any cuter! You are so blessed to kiss those sweet cheeks every day! How do you keep from eating him up?

crissy said...

What a stud. I have a similar issue with my little guy's hair. It is wild and rowdy and needs to be tamed. Although I'm not brave enough to buzz him, 'specially during winter....he does need a haircut, though. Desperately. (Perhaps tomorrow..)

jen said...

I didn't think it was possible for him to look more like his daddy. I was wrong.

And, as the mother of four boys whose styles only alternate between different attachments on the buzzer, I agree that buzzing boys is the only way to do it.
I do wish there was an equally painless alternative for my girls. When you discover it, please publish.

Stephanie said...

hahaha your mom rocks! the bowl cut is attractive... isn't it?
i love those little newly shaved heads, it just makes you wanna squish 'em a bit more while you rub their tiny bristles!

I know that back of the head's birds nest oh too well. My 2.5 year old has it (and has since he grew hair) every morning, and after every nap. Sometimes I try & tame it, sometimes, I don't. Now a days (per my husbands request) I have finally agreed to let it grow out a little, he does have some cute curls. But I've found that if I spray in some 'Aussie Sun Kissed Shine Spray' after the bath, and comb it, it dries pretty smoothed down. Oh, and I use conditioner on it too. I LOVE the buzz cut, and your sons big brown eyes with it, but if one day, your husband requests to let it free, remember my words of wisdom. I promise.

If only you could buzz girls hair... 3 of my daughters definately inherited 'hobo' hair... and I feel the glaring looks of other mothers constantly :)

Hayley said...

He is a handsome devil. Don't you think he looks older this way?

The bowl cut is tragic. I pray that it NEVER comes back in style. Ever.

Along with overalls.
And big bangs.

Hayley said...

And pegged leg jeans...

Pierce and Stacy said...

Ummm, I love C. Next time, embrace the punk look. :)

Pamela said...

Glad I wasn't the only gal who endured the bowl cut!

Chief is as cute as can be.

Elizabeth said...

I think your mother had/has the perfect response for everything.

As the mother of nine, she's it's amazing she can do that.

Cheryl said...

BUZZ cut? More like a BALD cut, lol! But no matter how you cut it, the result is still adorable. (As you were with your bowl cut.)

Jeannie said...

Koreans always shave their baby's head at about age one, "to encourage better hair growth". It seemed silly to me, but maybe there's something to it...

Mary said...

he does look cute, but my heart lurched when I saw him all buzzed. All of his baby hair gone. I hurts me to cut my boy's hair when their baby's. Actually it always hurts. I buzzed my 8 year olds wonderfully curly hair a few months ago and I wanted to cry. I like his hair now though.

Hetrick family said...

Totally have the same problem with both of my kids. My son's hair grows STRAIGHT out or up--he sports a buzz cut. My daughter's "bird nest" makes Chief's hair look like Farrah Fawcett perfection. Everyday we spend so much time with conditioner and combing. Only for it to return to it's original state as SOON as she sits back against the couch.

The Hopkins Home said...

I did the same thing to my son when he was about 15 months old - I just HATED his feathery hair and the buzz cut was so PERFECT. I felt guilty for feeling he was cuter - now that I know I'm not alone in that feeling I don't feel guilty anymore :)

Katie B said...

That makes me feel almost normal about my old pictures. My mother cut my bangs once the night before school pictures. When she was done, I had no bangs and what was there looked like I dipped my head in a shredder. Good times. Good times.

dotti said...

I love it...but I did like the "punk" look...he sooo could have pulled it off :)

He looks so grown up that way... I did the same with my son when he was about 2 because he had beautiful curls that made people think he was a girl! He has carried off the buzz ever since.

I couldn't help but giggle at the cuteness!

Azúcar said...

Glad to know my mom isn't the only one obsessed with her children in bowl cuts.

Cardalls said...

i SO had the bowl/Dorothy Hamill haircut for so many years, along with uneven bangs because my Mom would cut them herself.

Crystal said...

Hey the good news about the bowl cut picture--- your little stud earrings are totally back in style.

Becca said...

Ummm...ok. Am I the only one who finds this incredibly odd?

Lynette said...

I am so with you on this one! I even think my sons' teachers will be nicer to them with well groomed hair :)

Wendi said...

My mom always told me the short hair cut and the way she dressed me was "the style" back then. If that's the case, I'm SO thankful that style went away!!!! :)

The Chief is so cute. Those EYES are gorgeous!! Thanks for the play-by-play pictures. I love to rub my son's buzzed hair too--he's 10 and only lets me do it sometimes, though. :)

Jennifer Bowman said...

What a handsome boy!!

shanon said...

I winced when you said you put your baby in the bath and then were using electric clippers. Then I noticed there was no water in the bath. Phew! I thought your baby was going to be electrocuted! Sorry...just one of the many things that I worry about.

I did the same thing with my boys. Then one day my oldest (a senior) said he wanted to let his hair grow longer. Then the next one wanted longer hair too. So enjoy the ease of buzzing while they're little. So sad! Now, I think I will go and look at pictures of my boys with buzz cuts. Sniff Sniff!

amy said...

ohhhh i think buzz cuts on little blondies are so delicious.

yum!

but seriously - he could really pull off a mohawk next time. awesome.

The Lowe Family said...

SO this is funny because we have four boys and we've noticed that as their hair gets longer, they get more rowdy and naughty. Once we cut it, they go back to being sweet again. odd.

so yes. the chief DOES like it better like that.

Lisa said...

I propose that there is nothing sweeter than a little boy with a buzz. Love love love fuzzy buzz heads.

Grapefruit said...

Okay, this is going to come out sounding mean, but it's so funny I have to say it...

My four year old son just looked over my shoulder as I pulled up your blog. He looked at the first picture, of you with the bowl cut, and asked, "Who is that Mom?"

Then he paused, looked at it and said, "Maybe it's a bad guy."

I guess even a four year old can sense the danger in a bowl cut...

kristib said...

I love it! I have three boys that also sport the (almost) buzz cut. And thank you, thank you, thank you for not leaving it at the "punk look". Nothing looks quite as ridiculous as a child with a mohawk.

anne said...

Let me just quickly say that I am with Becca. This is the first I have ever heard of giving tiny little boys buzz cuts. That being said, all of cjane's friends will now blast me and later my comment will be deleted.

Sharon said...

I love it! My boys have always had buzz cuts. I love how grown up they look after their hair is cut. My 3 yo just got his done again. The one sad thing is that his hair doesn't look quite as red when it's short. I guess your gorgeous little blonde doesn't have to worry about that. :-)

2busy said...

He's so cute, but a cold cut for this time of year. Wear lots of beanies...

Brittany said...

Maybe the hardest thing about girls is dealing with the hair. I just had to cut an egg size nest out of my daughter's beautiful long blonde locks.

Husband really wants to shave their heads. I cannot explain why. He just likes a buzz cut like you like Chief's, I guess. Of course I won't let him. . .

. . . but sometimes, I'm tempted.

I so would have stopped with exhibit C. So adorable!

Hilarious and Adorable!!!!!

He is so stinkin' cute with his little buzz cut!!!!!

mooneyequalsmc2 said...

Your baby is PRECIOUS! Not a fan of that buzz cut, especially that short, on such a tiny tot but you are the mom and you know what you like!!!

I think I am just one of those moms that hang onto the angel infant hair WAY too long. My little guy had his head shaved when he was 7 months old due to a scalp IV (and omg did I cry)...and now that it has grown back I can not imagine cutting it.

Going to have to do so soon though...he has an odd mullet look going on. ha

Cherry Tree Lane said...

Is it ok that this made me cry?

Darn estrogen.

Sarah said...

I hate to break it to you, but, my husband STILL has the hobo hair. Short, long, washed, not washed...I call it his ding-a-ding hair. It just screams ding-a-ding at me every time I see that little tuft of rebelious hair.

It's adorable on him and on the Chief.

Brenda said...

Listen, your bowl cut was all the rage back in the day. Everyone was doing it, so why not you? I question a lot of the fashions either my mom chose for me, or I chose for myself, but the bottom line is they were in style! You just gotta laugh. :-)

Susan P said...

Years ago, when my 42 year old son was little, I gave him a buzz cut every summer, only we referred to it as a butch haircut. When he was about 8, I tried to skip the tradition by claiming I forgot how to give a butch haircut, to which he replied, "then take me to the butcher shop". Some remarks you never forget. Enjoy the Chief. He'll be grown too soon.

Kath said...

At least you got ear rings and ruffles on your overalls. that's somethin'!

Katie said...

I am IN LOVE with the shaved head. He was precious before, but he's adorable now! That's just ridiculous!

Jeannie said...

the buzz cut IS cute, and I also love the faux-hawk. A-dorable.

Liz said...

It is true. My husband is bald and he is always rubbing his head.

anne said...

what's done is done, but the baby hair rats nest could have been solved by putting conditioner in it.

Tessa said...

That is a JV tuft of hair. My kids have it going on!! A fist sized knot of the sweetest sweatiest baby hair you ever did see. When they are birthed with a full head of hair, it comes with the territory.

But I like his buzz.

Elisabeth said...

Maybe you like the bald look because of your hubby? The kiddo is cute for sure. We buzz my older kids hair, not quite so short though.

Andrea said...

I feel exactly the same way about my children's hair. Shaggy hair is distracting, and I am always amazed at how much my affection grows toward them after their hair is neatly cut. I have often wondered if I am a bad mother for liking my children better when they're "cute"...now I know I'm not alone.

amber said...

I had this EXACT haircut until i was about 11 years old! I have five brothers and we all had the same haircut. My mom said it was just easier to deal with because I would cry when she brushed my rats nest. and i love the new 'do on your son. super cute!

thorney said...

He is adorable with his buzz cut. I get the, "why didn't you cut my hair?" from my youngest, who was in 2nd grade with long blonde curls all over his head and running down his back, past his shoulders. Even dressed as a boy people assumed he was a girl. He has his dad's hair and we so didn't want to clip it all off, but we finally did. He was simply adorable when his short buzz and his already big deep brown eyes, liook gigantic with the less hair look. Good looking he still is.

okay, seriously, i just buzzed Willem's hair 2 nights ago. And (like the Chief) looks so adorable! He's like a little 1950's football player. I love it. We are on the same wave-length you and I.

It might not be a great idea to use the electric clippers in the bathtub - I've heard bad stories.

aezra noell said...

oh no! the baby chief is gone. its a sad realization. for boys anyway. thank goodness girls get to keep their hair.

H HoopThiel said...

My first grade photo documents my OWN hobo hair. I thought I'd grow out of it, but it just keeps cropping up. I have ALMOST decided to go for the girl equivalent of the buzz cut - the pixie. With a new baby, banishing the hobo hair is just too much some mornings.

I LOVE your blog. It makes me smile. You are witty and imperfect (who among us isn't!!) and wonderful.

I've lurked for awhile, but wanted to make that affirmation.

layla bliss said...

oh my.

this is the chief we're talking about.
this is c jane we're talking about.

i am fairly certain his little head
will be kept quite warm.

La Yen said...

Totally pro the buzz cut. I would do that to my boys in a minute, if I had boys. My brothers ALWAYS had it.

Next time, do it on a chair on the carpet, then vacuum it up. WAY easier to clean the hair that way than in the bathroom.

And I see your bowl cut and raise you giant teeth and glasses that were two sizes too big.

kanishk said...

look like a baby again *and* all grown up, though I'm not sure how that was achieved exactly...

Oh I really cringed as I scrolled down through the pictures, his "hobo" hair was such sweet baby hair! He is of course very adorable still but I miss the HAIR and its December! I personally have hair issues with my 4 kids so I can relate though.
