They Try To Pull Me Away, But They Don't Know The Truth
I meant to write last night but got caught up when I saw Leona Lewis was going to be on David Letterman.
Dear Leona,
I don't care what they say, I'm in love with you.
Love,
c jane
Plus I had to watch the finale of So You Think You Can Dance even though I don't feel emotionally invested this season. I think it is because the choreography has been nothing to write home about.
Dear Home,
Nothing to write about.
Love,
c jane
Nothing like say, season 4 when Chelsea and Mark danced to Bleeding Love by--who else?--Leona Lewis:
Anyway, as I was writing this post in the basement I forgot about the pot of milk I put on the stove for hot chocolate and it boiled over and burned mightily, filled the house with smoke and produced a smell of charcoal, urine and nightmare.
This why I usually post at night.
Dear Self,
Get ready for the slew of "safety comments: friendly reminders!" from your less absent minded friends.
Love,
c jane

104 Pieces of Opinion:
I've never commented on your blog, but HAD to today. I too LOVE Leona Lewis. I love to belt out her songs over and over. I too have not been impressed with the choreography on SYTYCD. The bad deal is that I think the top 10 or 12 have been their best top 10 or 12 they've ever had. Where's Mia Michaels? I too loved the Bleeding Love dance. But remember the Breast Cancer Awareness last season? I don't think they had any memorable ones like those these season. Sorry, no amazing suggestions for the smell problem, I hope you solve it quickly!
I tend to be absent minded, too. Do you think scented candles would help? Otherwise, probably just time...
I should have suggestions for removing the burnt smell from your home--I should have them because I'm a perpetual burner (of food, not myself). I should have them but I don't. I say you just get into it. A smokey kitchen is the scent of worthy preoccupation.
Hmm. For the smell, my vote is for making clove oranges (citrus and clove both help-- plus seasonally festive).
TOTALLY relate! And that is one of my all time FAVs on SYTYCD! This season...not so much. Happy Holidays :)
Frebreze really does help with that kind of thing. You might get some of the room freshener and some of the fabric refresher, in case the smoke settled into your furniture. They have some really yummy scents out for the holidays right now...or they have some really yummy fresh scents for the rest of the year too!!
Ever since Mark and Chelsea danced that number, Dave and I have been trying to master that move that they do with their chests to the heartbeat beat. Let me tell you, it's NOT easy.
My bad kitchen experience was with an artichoke. It ruined my beloved Le Creuset pan and I have never quite recovered. We got rid of the stink in the kitchen by simply moving. And scented candles.
*Febreze, sorry. Got R happy :-)
when your house is smelly (I usually do this after my husband cooks bacon):
Fill a pot of water on the stove sprinkled with cinnamon. Simmer for a few hours, until your house smells like you've been baking :)
I also put a small bowl of vinegar out to absorb yucky smells.
candles will work.
I will suggest the Christmas Tree scented candle by Hobble Creek which you can purchase at your local Robert's store. I believe it's 30% off this week also! :D
Mia Michaels quit the show. Sometimes I thin she is full of herself - although that Joshua/Katie dance was awesome.
Did you see the Katherine/Jacob dance? How could you not love it? Or the one Travis Wall choreographed? Awesome. But I agree, on a whole I haven't been that impressed this season.
Hi my name is Tiffany from Bakersfield, I enjoy reading your blog... =) The other day I turned the wrong burner on my electric stove and the burner I turned on still had the metal cover... It smelled all day.... so bad... I tried everything ... nothing worked till I pour about 1 box of baking soda under the burner.... and the next day it was fine... well that and a lot of febreeze.. =0)
I meant to say "think" not "thin".
Lemons. The acid counteracts the sour milk feet smell. :)
Just today I read an article in the paper on the married Utah DiLellos where they discussed past Utah contestants. And can you even believe they failed to list Chelsie? My feathers were a bit ruffled.
The Chelsie/Mark/Leona combo is my favorite number ever on SYTYCD. Ever. Long live Chelsie, Mark and Leona!
I am CRACKING up over this blog post! LOVE the "Dear Home" part! And yes, SYTYCD this season is bleh. Still good and all, but no dances to remember, like Bleeding Heart or the addiction one with Kupono.
Hmmm..I am not allowed to make cocoa anymore. Because I keep forgetting about the milk on the stove. Now, J takes care of that task. Standing by, stirring, not letting distractions get in the way of cocoa in progress.
Our house stunk, too! Now, Cjane, you and I have something in common!
**How Cjane and I are alike
1. Morman? nope
2. Big family? nope. omly child
3. Kids the same age? nope. no kids
4. Married to a guy named Chup? nope, married to a guy named J.
5. Homes smell stinky with the aroma of burnt milk? YES!!!!!!
Yep, Febreeze worked fairly well. But, I like the suggestion of moving.
Misha
I just watched it again. Chills. Chills I tell you.
I won't talk about how after I first watched this number live, I downloaded "bleeding love" and then put it on repeat for like 2 weeks. I won't say anything about that.
Kitchen: in a small pot put sliced oranges and lemons, cover with water and add a few sticks of cinnamon and cloves, simmer on low for hours.
I've heard that if you cut open an onion ~ it will absorb the smell after you just painted.....hmmmm I wonder if it will work on the burnt smell?
Minus washing every surface in your house with a nice lemony vinegar solution I think the smell has to dissipate on its own. I know this because my brother tried to cook cookie dough in my brand new microwave, but since he is deaf did not hear it cooking and filled my house with horrid smoke smells in the middle of freezing winter and it took MONTHS to not smell that stink. May the fragrance fairies be with you.
I googled ~ people said onion would work=)
Also vinegar. Place bowls of vinegar throughout the house. and/or boil 1 part water to 1 part vinegar.
I think SYTYCD has been horrible this year! the stage? the choreography? and since when do they have 6 people in the finale?
Love, love, love Leona Lewis!
I'm with you on not feeling interested in SYTYCD this season. I suppose it's just meant to be on in the summer. It gives me something to look forward to. But truly, if it isn't choreographed by Mia Michaels or Wade Robson, I'm not as interested.
As far as the smell, try Bath and Body Works Frosted Cranberry scented oil in an oil burner. That stuff covers up any yucky smell! Good luck!
coffee grinds in a bowl near the offending area have been known to soak up the nasty smell...good luck!!
I also love Leona Lewis, and SYTYCD and still cannot watch that Bleeding Heart routine without crying!!
Crabtree and Evelyn make kitchen spray. It's the only thing I've ever found that immediately gets rid of any kitchen odor.
Totally agree about So you think you can dance this season... sad really. No Mia Michaels. Thats really sad!
My husband burned popcorn until the microwave was black. We had to wipe every single hard surface then febreeze every soft surface that we couldn't throw into the washer. Good times...
He's still not allowed to make popcorn.
As one of your readers who lives in England (and one who has stayed with you even after you stopped writing about Stephanie as I find you fabulous, funny and interesting), I am delighted to read about your love for our gorgeous Leona Lewis. She really is just so beautiful, talented and humble. Keep up the fab writing
Tara
Williams Sonoma makes a great candle that eliminates odors. I think it's just called a Kitchen Candle or something basic like that.
Oh my gosh you just made me remember a time my mom put some eggs on the stove to boil and then forgot and we went shopping. We came home to a pot of boiled sulfur and a house full of black smoke. UGH!!
I agree about this season of SYTYCD totally!
Well, I say, whatever about the spilled milk--don't cry over spilled milk! :o) But I will say, that I LOVE your tree. I love a good flocked tree. A.) It shows off the ornaments and B.) I LOVE that you did orange and turquoise.
Merry Christmas from Gig Harbor.
my mom used to be a caterer, something always spilt in the oven. simmer lemon slices in water on the stove to get rid of the burnt smell, but don't forget about them, because burnt lemon water smells even worse!
I agree with the Febreeze suggestions. My husband the pyro has gotten our house smelling smokey numerous times and Febreeze does the trick.
I miss the old stage, the 3rd rotating judge, don't like the new choreographers, don't like the top 6 vs top 4, and besides a couple of contemporary routines can't really remember that many of the routines from this season, and am sad that Mia left the show. I am sorely disappointed. I have watched every season, and all but a handful of performances. I was so excited they'd be doing a Fall season, too. Sigh. Hopefully season 7 will be better!!
I have too many comments for this post!
1. I love Leona Lewis! It all started with Chelsea's dance (she's friends with my daughter Jenny, I know so many famous people because of my daughters - like YOU!) and I bought the CD for "Bleeding Love" and then discovered that it's the best CD in the world! My current favorite, except for with the holidays I'm loving SheDaisy's Christmas CD
2. When my 3rd baby was about 8 months old and still getting up in the night for a bottle, which had to be heated on the stove in a pan of water (yes, I'm that old - before microwaves) I put the bottle in the pan of water on the stove when I heard him fussing, but he stopped so I thought I'd just heat it up for later and laid back down - well, next thing I know the entire house is filled with acrid smoke since it burned through the water, the bottle and the milk. (I had to just throw the pan away) My husband had a broken ankle at the time and couldn't get up, just started yelling at me. It was February so I opened all the doors and windows and put all three children in our bed with the electric blanket. What an adventure! And to answer your question - I don't remember how I got the burn smell out of the house.
love the mark/chelsea dance too...oh so fab. My husband once put KETTLE CORN in the microwave for 5 minutes plus and we had black billowing smoke and a situation VERY similar to yours, it was awful and I was also pregnant and very nauseous.
I tried MANY MANY things to get the burnt smell out, but I have to say burning oils from the Body shop is what helped the most!!! You can try putting vinegar in bowls around the house too to absolve the smell, but I know it is so bad, sorry!!! GOOD LUCK!
Okay, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who isn't emotionally invested in this season of SYTYCD. I too haven't really loved the choreography. Is Mia Michaels still around? Maybe I've just missed her good stuff.
Seasons 4 and 5 were my favorites.
Good luck getting rid of the yucky burn smell. I loathe a stinky house, so I would be going crazy right now trying to get rid of the stench.
Love the blog. . . for the stinky smell. . . . put out a bowl of coffee beans. Weird but true.
You're too funny! I have had some kitchen mess ups this week that have made me wonder where my head at! I suggest brewing a pot of apple cider in the Crockpot. I just use a can of apple juice, some cinnamon sticks, sprinkle of cloves and a couple Tbsp of sugar. Let it brew and most importantly hide last night’s mishap!
I'm so not feeling SYTYCD this season, either. I think when they do it twice a year it becomes a little too cliche.
I burned something a few weeks ago and I put a pot to simmer on the stove with cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, whole allspice berries, some orange peels and water. It took the smell away after a day or so... or maybe it just covered it up with holiday goodness, I'm not sure.
boil vinegar with baking soda in it! That should do the trick! I'm not a fan of SYTYCD this season either! My favorite from last year was Jeanine and Jason!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9LbkI4Pfuo
Back-to-back seasons of SYTYCD is just too much. Nap and Tab have lost something in their hip/hop choreography....it's just so blah! Wade is a genius and Travis has helped with Mia being gone but there's still a huge void. Having said that, last night's episode with Kathryn and Jacob's dance was FAB-U-LOUS!
I agree about SYTYCD completely! The choreography this year has left MUCH to be desired, and getting a Shane Sparks number is pretty much the kiss of death - his stuff is horrible! Plus, the personalities of the dancers haven't been showcased very well, unless they have no personalities to begin with... Which I'm thinking may be the case here. Except for Mollee. As annoying as she was in the beginning, I grew to love her dancing and her work ethic. Jakob for the win, though!
Sorry about the stinky kitchen! My suggestion would be to bake up something yummy like cinnamon rolls. That way your house will smell good AND you'll have gooey, sweet treats to nibble on :)
I'm so glad that other people feel the way I do about SYTYCD. I love the show, but this season isn't my favorite.
Just last week I painted a HUGE nativity set and then had to, of course, spray seal it which left the house smelling like a paint factory for several hours until I plugged in my "Scentsy" cinnamon candle thingy. I know there are several different brands of melty wax non flame no smoke type candle burners... it totally helped. Any who my two cents.
That clip from SYTYCD is my absolute favorite. I posted it on my blog a few months ago. Not sure if anyone else has really watched it, but I am obsessed. Thanks for giving me an excuse to watch it again. This is the routine that makes me wish I could dance!
I'm so with you...this season I find myself fast forwarding via DVR much more frequently than most.
And, I know I'm going against the Utah grain here, but not really feeling Ryan this year. A little TOO ballroom cheese for me (in the other styles).
Man, I'm a geek for having that many opinions to post in one comment section about a dance show. Says the chubby girl that can't dance herself.
Good luck with burnt milk. If you find a cure, please let the rest of us know.
Funny I thought I was alone in my feeling let down by the choreography in SYTYCD this season. SO NOT TRUE as shown by your readers comments.
There are only two dances I even think were memorable. One of them being the Vienesse waltz with Molly and Jakob last week. There has been too much ballroom and hip hop, and not enough lyrical or jazz. What they have had has been mediocre. And yes, the lit stage background causes eye drama too. -sigh- Hope for better next season.
k i cried just watching that chip from SYTYCD!! darn those prego hormones
so i'm a blog stalker who has never commented but i KNOW this one...because i burn things often...it's a curse bestowed on the multitaskers of the world...put a bowl of vinegar in the room and it will suck up the smell. :)
I must say that other than Travis Wall's choreo I also have not been impressed. Yes, to piggy back onto what everyone has said, the Bleeding Love dance was sick, rad, and as the Yankees would say, wicked awesome. My other favorites:
1. The Breast Cancer Dance (the Maxwell song makes me cry everytime)
2. Addiction Dance: Kayla and Kupono
3. The Bench Dance: Travis and Heidi
As for the smell, the vinegar with hot water solution with drops of lemon and/or lavender essential oils works like a champ.
God speed dear cjane!
and this, dear cjane, is precisly why i love you....i giggled through the whole thing. wanna be my bff?
Season 4 was the best and that dance my favorite. In fact, I got to see it live when they toured in SLC and I screamed until my throat was raw.(That makes me sound like such a teenager!)
I heard Mia Michaels didn't quit, she just had work conflicts with this season. Hopefully she will be back next season.
leave vinegar around your house. I usually just fill a lid and put that somewhere hidden where the smell can permeate. It doesn't make your house smell like vinegar, instead it neutralizes the air around it. Perfect!
hmmm middle of the night huh... lets see if one of the kids wake me up... and might stumble my way to the computer :-)
had to laugh about the milk....I'll tell you later! LOL
Boil some orange peels and cinnamon sticks and whole cloves, but don't let it boil over. I've used this more times than I can count, and if it does boil over (guilty) THAT is a smell that only open windows and a good scrub down can get out. Good luck
That video still gives me goose bumps! It doesn't matter how many times I see it, it does it to me every time. Plus, who doesn't love Leona Lewis? AWESOME!
I put tons of cinnamon on a baking sheet and put it in the oven at 300for an hour or so
Try vanilla candle for the smell. Love your blog and your family!
White vinegar. Pour in a spray bottle and spritz over carpet. You can also do this to your couches but do a spot check first to make sure it won't ruin the upholstery, I've never had a problem but you never know... You can also use on all hard surfaces just dilute to 50% water 50% white vinegar.
You don't know me, but I just have to say AMEN SISTA about Leona Lewis!
LOL! Oh CJane. You know you're readers so well! :D
I have no suggestions for getting the burnt nightmare smell out of your house. I should know the trick though, since it happens to me at least once every six months (hopefully no one turns us in to family services for being so absent minded. How dare us?)
Lots of luck with that! :D
PS Leona Lewis rocks!
I'm a total SYTYCD geek and just have to say that I was on SYTYCD with my hubby during the Top 14 Tuesday night show. You can see us right behind Cat Deeley every time she's about to announce the dance. It was very fun. But I agree that it hasn't been as good as last season. I think it's partly because we haven't really had a chance to get to know these contestants like in seasons past, for some reason. I think the win will go to Katherine if it's a girl or Russell or Jacob if it's a guy (wow, do I sound like I'm picking out baby names or what?!)
Besides being gorgeous and talented, Leona sounds so lovely and kind in interviews, too. Love her!
Love love love that dance! I posted that video on my blog when it was first done, did I say how much I LOVE it! Probably one of my all time favorites on SYTYCD. Sorry no advice about the stinkyness (is that a real word?) in your house it will go away eventually hopefully sooner rather then later.
I LOVE nappy-tab when they do more lyrical hip-hop. Don't you think though that we could at least say Sonya is choreographing some pretty cool things? The one with elanor and jacob where they were wearing red and black was pretty awesome. I miss that Mia Michaels though.
Put some vanilla in a saucepan with some water and simmer it... but don't let it burn (which I tend to do!)
Dear C Jane,
I love this post...and that dance by Mark & Chelsea. One of my favorites. Thanks for giving me an excuse to watch it again.
An adoring reader.
Loved this post, especially your letter to "home" CLEVER! I actually live in Australia so your chat will be first thing in the morning here but I will definitely try to make it!!!
Don't you know you're contractually obligated to love SYTYCDers who are Mormon (not to mention from the good ole valley) and therefore be emotionally invested in the season? Welp, now you know and can root for them regardless of how well they do or don't dance.
I have been reading your blog for over a year and have never commented on here...I wanted to share a cover of 'Bleeding Love' that a friend of mine sang...to me it takes the song to a whole new level. I hope you enjoy and keep up the awesome work on your blogs...they are very inspirational to me. here is the link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHc9qnRZDJg or jakewalden.com
I love love love that Chelsea and Mark number whenever I hear that song on the radio their dance plays in my mind. It made me appreciate that song in a whole different way. Tabitha and Napoleon are my favs with Mia Michaels a close second. I wonder if they just played this season too close to last season so we weren't really hungry for it yet?
Wash your walls.
Haha I loved this post. It's great to hear that you too get distracted by your favorite shows and burn things on the stove. LOL :) You're such a doll!
I love love love Leona Lewis and I have to say that Chelsea and Mark's dance is STILL my all time favorite off all 6 seasons. Wow! Just wow! I have no suggestions for the smell of burnt milk......sorry.
I just love Leona's hair. Is that for real? How can someone be blessed with that much great hair? It's so unfair.
I haven't really been into this season either. Chelsea and Mark's dance was amazing, I still pull it up on youtube every now and then! I loved that season, loved Chelsea, and loved the memorable dances that came out it. Definitely missed that this time around.
Suggestion: stop burning things in the first place.
Love, Rookie
I am largely absent minded as well, like the time I put popcorn in the microwave for 30 minutes, instead of 3, the whole house stunk, bag was on fire, had to chuck it out the kitchen window. Febreeze and open windows helped my smell go away, luckily it was in the summer :)
You have to burn something else to get the smell out. Something mild and not meat.
Read your blog every day...or every other...anyway I keep tabs on ya. About the burnt smell, set out a bag of charcoal, (opened) you know brickets. The charcoal will absorb the odor. Works awesomely. Found out the hard way, when my husband put a dead javelina head in the freezer of a vacant apartment next to us. Then the power got shut off who knows when in that apartment, and well, you get the idea. The smell could have killed someone, then bag o charcoal to the rescue!!! Good Luck!
Just went through the burnt issue but with rice pilaf I was making for my grandparents 50th anniversary. My husband called me frantically while i was at the church decorating "the rice is burnt!" Ugh! I knew it couldn't be because i had checked it and added more liquid, but when I rushed home I was greeted by a thick cloud of smoke in my house! Yikes! Luckily it had just burned on the top sides of the roaster oven. That was Saturday and this is the first day I finally realized I don't smell the smoke anymore. It took opening doors and windows as much as possible despite the cold and burning some cinnamon pumpkin candles for hours on end, JUST DON"T FORGET ABOUT THEM! Others suggested oranges, cinnamon and spices on the stove which would be festive and smell yummy, but then you have the stove issue again. I have heard of the charcoal but never tried it. I have tried vinegar and didn't feel like it helped much, but that was for the cupboard where our garbage is kept. Good luck!!
That was by far the best dance ever on SYTYCD!! LOVE IT!!!
Do you have a special needs community leader?
How about an older than dirt community leader?
Just wonderin'
For taking care of funky smells, open a window. It's cheap and works wonders.
Tammy and Parker
I've been reading long enough, time for a comment. The absence of one Mia Michaels was sorely felt this season. I believe Li'l C would put it, "My heart has longed for the majestic harmony of brilliant bodies in motion, creating a melodious symphony that resonates through the very fibers of my being directly to the soul, where all things beautiful are felt and stored."
On the stink note: Make a batch of apple butter in your crock pot. It involves enough stong, yummy spices and cooks long enough that it's lovely smell fills the house. You can even use store sauce. It's worth buying a few jars to yummy smellify the house. It wiped out the smell after I caught my apples on fire when I forgot about them when making applesauce (and blogging at the same time).
I think I have watched that particular SYTYCD dance, like, 50 bazillion times (in the past).
We should be best friends. Wanna?
If it makes you feel any better...I went through the Wendy's drive thru, paid and didn't pick up my food. NICE!
I say you try every single suggestion at once. Vinegar, candles, coffee beans, oranges, cloves, onion, exorcist--everything.
And tell Rookie to go to Hell; when she made me bruschetta, she burned the bread (though admittedly not to the point of pervasive odor).
I disagree about SYTYCD, the dance they did again tonight with Elenor and Jakob, LOVED.
Try the Baking Soda boxes and bowls of white vinegar...both will draw in scents. You can also wipe down walls and countertops (stovetops where milk may have boiled over) with white vinegar.
Katrina
ok, but why urine?
Oh stop it Sparks. It wasn't even that bad. It was a shade darker than golden. And that didn't stop you from devouring the bruschetta anyways.
That is the only SYTYCD clip I have ever seen. SOOOO good.
Bad smells? I am your gal. I sell Scentsy. Amazing, and I am here in provo. (proud wife of a byu law student & mom of 4)
www.scentsy.com/33949. Check it out and e-mail me for more info.
Buy it for yourself for Christmas :)
Sarah the Scentsy lady. You know from TheCoterie.com?
LOVE YOUR POSTS!!!
I burned something in my kitchen and I got the smell out by spraying the room with one of those air sanitizing sprays (like Oust) and wiping down the walls (the smoke smell will stick to the walls) with diluted Mr. Clean.
Yeah, this season of SYTYCD stinks. I think it has something to do with the stupid stage. Bring the old one back!
c jane, boil some water with cinnamon stick for 5-10 mins and that should help with the smell. : ) btw love all your posts!!
My toaster is possessed. It chooses to not pop up if I leave the room. If I stay in the kitchen and watch it, it pops up every time. I have a bunch of pieces of burned toast in my flowerbed (where they were tossed for smoking in my house!)
Dear Santa,
Amelia (as in Amelia Bedelia) needs a new toaster for Christmas.
Oh how I adore you :)
To get rid of the burnt smell (and I've been there, done that) I boiled a big pot full of sliced lemons. That helped pretty well but then to fully get rid of it I did a pot of water, cinnamon sticks and vanilla. Now THAT helped tons AND smells holiday-ish. :)
There is SO-nothing-wrong with being in love with Leona or that dance.
For all its faults, I applaud "Scrubs" for capitalizing on hetero love. It's guy love.
Oh, the smell? Dunno.
My smoke alarm goes off so often that nobody even bothers to investigate anymore. Regular Sunday occurrence.
Thank you for the SYTYCD comment! I have been so unimpressed this season, and every time I say so, my friends/family look at me like I'm taking crazy pills!
It's nice to finally know I'm not alone...
This post literally had me laughing out loud! Loved it!
