My Brief History with Beyonce's Single Ladies

Dancing at The Chief's birthday party last May

Some time last year
it was my turn to stay the night in the hospital with Stephanie. I can't tell you it was a fine experience, because it was miserable. Lights were turned off at nine, Stephanie fell to sleep talking and mumbling, I had a smelly recliner next to the bed and machines beeped on-and-off all night. This was all made worse by the fact I had never left my baby overnight and was still breast feeding. My chest almost had to be air lifted out of that hospital by the time the night was over.

But have I mentioned? I love my little sister. Anything for her.

(I also had her children and husband living with me at the time, so extra kudos right?)

Some time in the very early morning, nurses came in to take Steph's vitals and ready her for the day. They turned on the tv so we could wake up to the fuzzy outlines of outdated tv shows.

"Would you turn the channel for me?" Steph asked.

And I clicked through until we found some channel playing music videos.

"Keep it here." Steph ordered.

So we sat there watching videos, something I hadn't done since college. It was then Beyonce's Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) first came to my soul. It was perfection: the dancing, the music, the lighting, the camera angles. I've never been so taken with anything on tv. After it was over I sat in the recliner paralyzed with the joy of it all.

"Awesome." I said slowly and whispery.

Steph rolled her head over in my direction, her eyes following.

"DO NOT show that to Claire and Jane."

"But did you . . . see that?" I asked her still staring at the tv with adoration in my eyes.

Steph raised a finger at me and shook it.

"Alright. Alright." I assured her.

On the way home I thought, "As soon as I am done breast feeding--and my chest isn't Texas--I am going to learn that dance."

----

When I was done breast feeding I tried to learn that dance.

I wanted to perform it at The Chief's One Year Dance Party in front of our family. In order to do this I called on two dancers in my family, both named Lindsay. One my niece, the other my sister-in-law, trained dancers each.

They taught me the first eight counts. Yikes. My body hadn't moved my hips in that sort of direction in a really long time. Maybe ever.

I had Lucy record our practices so I could privately go back and fix my faults. There were too many faults. By count 16 I plead mercy. MERCY!

Instead I asked my sister-in-law Lindsay to create an entirely new dance to go with Emilíana Torrini's Jungle Drum--a snappy song The Chief and I liked to dance to anyway. There was some definite shaking in the her choreography but I didn't have to rewrite my body's entire muscle system to figure it out.
---

I had my parents over for dinner tonight. Lucy and Ric came too. We ate Mexican Chili-- a recipe which called for cocoa powder and chili powder. My kinda spice.

When my parents come to dinner there is only a short amount of time post-dinner they will stay. Maybe twenty minutes. My dad will say to my mother, "Cindy, I think it is time for us to go home." Because that man loves his bed and a good book about some non-fictional subject.

Yawn.

Lucy and I had a little game going on tonight to see how long we could get my dad to stay. We tempted him with sugary fruit tarts, law-maker conversation and Ric's creamy hot chocolate. But it wasn't long before we heard the infamous line, "Cindy, I think . . ."

Which is when Lucy said to me (with a wink),

"Show him Beyonce's Single Ladies."

And I smiled back, knowing the joy it would give both of us to watch Dad watch that video. Though conservative in politics, my father has a liberal heart for R&B. We were raised on Whitney and Toni, so Beyonce is only inevitable.

As my parents sat on the couches in the den, I asked On Demand to show me the video. Up it popped and in no time the brilliance of that piece of work was displayed for all to see.

After it was over Dad got up and gave a hand to pull up my mom.

Then he turned to me.

"Darlin," he said kissing my cheek. "Thanks for having us over. Thanks for the chili. And thanks for the video. You just made my night."

That's awesome. I showed that to my dad and he started dancing. :) Gotta love our dear sweet daddies! Hearing about your family reminds me of mine, thank you for sharing!

I wish I could shake it like Beyonce! Thank goodness the video came out after my husband already "put a ring on it" or I might be in trouble!

Sammi said...

A definite CJane moment I think! I think we would love to see the video!

Katie said...

Well who wouldn't stay a little longer for that video?

My three year old (who happens to be an amputee) sings it, "All the single leggies." Which we always get a good laugh out of.

Jungle Drum is our FAVORITE!!!!! I burned a mix for our road trip down to North Carolina this past fall and it was pretty much on repeat the entire time. Have you seen the video? weird. That and Great DJ were the most popular dance songs of 2009 for our family.

We LOVE dancing. Maybe when I come to Utah again this spring with my boys we will have a dance party at Tyler's house! woo hoo! That tyler can move too.

cjane, i have wished many a time that i could shake it like beyonce does in that video. but alas, i don't think it'll be happening in this lifetime. love the idea to dance at your son's birthday party though.

I think it is hilarious that you guys were playing how long can we get dad to stay.

I love Beyonce! And, you are absolutely right--that vide is a masterpiece.

Great story. Your dad is so cool. You come by that honest, I can see.

What a great post! And that is one addictive song... I don't think I've been able to change the channel when I hear it come on. Then that funny youtube video pops in my head of the guy in the leotard dancing alone to it.... which always induces laughter.

Lisa said...

Ugh ugh ogh...All the Single Ladies. Thanks! I'll be singing it all day long! What was Steph's bumpy road this time? Details! Our Soul Sista' is at the forefront!

Ha ha! That made me smile! What a great story. My FIL is just like that - he's gotta be in bed by 8:00 or he just can't function. So cute that you and Lucy were trying to get him to stay! Have a great day!

I love LOVE that video. . .and the jonas bros version. . .it's the only jonas bros thing I've ever seen. Single Ladies makes my day!

Emilíana's a minx. You chose well.

One of my all-time favorite TV-watching experiences was the time that my dad, brother, and grandpa were flipping channels and collectively stumbled across the Single Ladies video for the first time. My dad immediately hit "record" and after it was over they watched it about three more times.

Those were happy dudes.

My baby girl (almost 2) and I have a love affair with that song. She puts her hands up, dances around with me and says "Lyssa is Independent WOMAN!" I love it. It makes any long -20 degrees wintery day a little brighter. :-)

Court! I just giggle and giggle at your words. Makes my mornings extra happy. Nobody tells a story better than you!

I like that Beyonce looks like a real woman! No fakies and she embraces her "ass"ets! And while I really like her Single Ladies song/vid.... I LOVE her and Justen Timberlake on SNL making fun of it! HILLARIOUS!!!! I have a crush on Justen's humor. :-)

Cjane, I'm a big fan of yours! Do you watch Glee? They had an episode featuring that song. It incorporated a football team winning it's first game by distracting their opponents by dancing to that song. It was hilarious! I recommend watching it. Keep writing! =)

It's amazing how much baby's like that song! My Little Man loves all music but when he is particularly cranky, I turn up Beyonce on Pandora.com and he is happy as a clam!

I love that song too! Kudos to you for actually trying to learn the dance. It just looks so hard and intimidating!

We love us some Beyonce over here too. My two year old breaks out singing "All the single ladies, all the single ladies" at least 6 times a week. Good stuff!

I love Beyonce and that song is a favorite workout song of mine. If only I could move my old body like she moves her young one. I have no bust, hips, thighs or butt and envy all that she has and in such perfect porportions.

Of course I am still relearning how to walk up stairs so moving like she does is a good goal for me to have at this point in my life.

I love you parents so much. Does Cindy have FB or a blog?

Blessings, Mari

Wow, I'm such a prude in this crowd. I dance and this is not bragging, I could do that dance. But it was way too sexy. Not something I'd want my children or husband to see. Is it obvious that I stopped watching MTV a long time ago?

I love how you guys party in your family though!

steve and lisa said...

HA HA!! my parents & my husband's parents - mad dash for the door after 20 minutes in our home! Lol! We have tried so many tricks to keep them longer after the watch check, the "we cannot drive after dark" mumble, the 8:30 p.m. lights out excuse, the eyesight & hearing are failing us! Love your outake on life & made me feel that it is OKAY if my parents cannot feel at home in my home! "we will be on some beautiful WARM island doing unmentionables" will be our excuse when we reach the tottering age! HA! Dream on!

Thank you for reminding me of "Single Ladies"! Oh how I wish I had grabbed my camera before putting it on for my 1.5 yr old. I think her moves are just as good as Beyonce's!

Meanwhile, I keep dancing said...

I love the video for "Single Ladies," too! Thanks for introducing me to "Jungle Drum." I love it!

as they say here in scotia - cheers!

Jeannie said...

while i probably wouldn't want my little girls watching it either, i don't think it was all that sexy given what we see on TV constantly every day. i loved it. also the SNL version which by now you've probably seen. as someone else has also mentioned, Glee has made Jeannie feel like PERFORMING baby, but she shakes it like a hippo, unfortunately.

I've had this song in my head all day long thanks to your post! Then I realized that I did not have it on my iPod, and quickly remedied that situation. Love me some "Single Ladies"!

Love the story about your dad!

Wow. My very first Beyonce exposure. Ever. That woman can move. And so can you apparently. wow.

I read through the linked posts--I had to tell you--Jesse and Lindsey lived in my ward a couple of years ago--they had just 2 children then. I drooled over Lydia's hair every week. Oh if I could do my girls hair half as cute . . .but no. Ponytails it is. anyhow, they are beautiful children. Lindsey is a sweetheart.

Hope all is well with everyone.
