An email arrived in my inbox from Jodi. For a school project her son is collecting responses to the question, "What is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you?"
The nicest thing?
First, my mother conceived me, gestated me, bore me and then raised me. And my dad--you know--did his part.
Second, my husband married me. That took a lot of courage for at least twenty reasons.
Third, my son lets me change his pants even when he adamantly does not want me to change his pants which is most of the time I try to change his pants.
I'd say those three to start with, but perhaps this isn't the response Jodi's son had in mind.
So how about this?
How about this weekend when my brother-in-law Ric (alias Andrew) spent three days painting my living room because my dream of gold walls never left my soul. In fact, it would wake me up mid-sleep with electrical messages up and down my spine. GOLD WALLS! GOLD WALLS!
Reminding me of that poem from The Great Gatsby:
Then wear the gold hat, if that will move her;
If you can bounce high, bounce high for her too,
Till she cry "lover, gold-hatted, high-bouncing lover,
I must have you!"
I must have you Gold Walls, indeed.
So Ric--under the guise that we would be paying him instead of a non-family member-- coated our walls with gold and our ceiling with white. He worked around the weekend clock, dug deep into his personal time, and ruined a pair of shoes, until the place was the envy of El Dorado itself. Metallic and shiny, ritzy and retro.
But when it was time to pay, Ric insisted on service instead of payment.
"I need the blessings more than I need your money."
And how do you respond to that? I mean, besides with tears and heart-melting gratitude?
So I tried Lucy instead, a slight whisper in her ear.
"How much do we owe really?"
But she--she who spent every minute at the house with her husband and baby cheering him on--wouldn't take it from me either.
Almost every day someone does something incredibly nice for me. Almost every day I think, "How can I return the kindness?" I am daily recipient of the "nicest thing anyone has ever done for me."
But Ric painting my gold walls so that the nesting crew inside my head will let me sleep? That is goes beyond nice. That is humanitarian aid.
Thanks Ric, Lucy and Betsy.
And as a post script:
Today I went to Ikea to buy lampshades in colors that would compliment my gold walls.
"Oh walls you are so sexy!"
Like that.
And when my cart was sufficiently full of difficult-to-pronounce Ikea goods I checked myself out. Only when I went to do the paying part, my debit card was not in my wallet. I had used it for an online purchase the night before and left it squarely on my desk. This was not good. I live thirty minutes away from Ikea and I had no intention on driving back home, retrieving that piece of plastic and driving all the way back.
So I said to the helpful employee,
"I don't have my debit card."
"Is it in your car?"
He asked.
"Nope."
"Can you run home?"
"Nope."
He looked at me. I looked at him.
I was in shock, really, that this was all happening.
Which is when a tall, bobbed-haired mom with an adorable red-head two-year-old in her cart said to me,
"I will pay for it."
I looked at her. The Ikea guy looked at her.
"You want to pay for her stuff?"
He asked.
"She can pay me back."
She replied.
"Really?"
I said surprised. Not one to take people up on such offers.
"I know who you are. I've read your blog."
she said, whipping out a credit card.
"I will take you up on the offer."
I replied.
Because suddenly we weren't strangers, suddenly I felt like I knew her and she knew me. She'd sat on my couch before--so to speak.
(The couch I bought at Ikea.)
After the purchase, we exchanged information and I promised a check in the mail stat. I was overcome with her generosity and I couldn't help but stutter a million thank yous.
As we left the store with our babies riding backwards in our metal carts, the Ikea guy announced,
"Nicest customer ever!"
Seriously.

Wow...amazing....there are good people out there :)
If someone had told me that blogging would get you help when sans money, I would have started years ago. Oh wait, I did, minus the picture of my mug (British for face) which would be needed in order to have such fabulous groupies. May have to re-think the whole privacy idea.
Your gold walls remind me of Dynasty, Falcon Crest and Dallas. All filled with top women.
What a great story! and a great lady~
Yay for good, blog reading people! Did you find your debit card???
gold walls!!!! my husband looks at my cross-eyed when i ask to paint them egg-shell blue. i should REALLY aim higher!

That story warmed my heart. Thank you.
Wow - I love to read your blog each morning. This is a wonderful story. It is heart warming to hear kind stories.
First that is really a nice and amazing lady who would do that. You blog restores my faith pretty much everyday.
And second. Love the Gold walls. L.O.V.E them.
Love the gold. It's a rich and warm color...unique but comfortable. Gold can be tricky, but it looks like you totally pulled it off.
What an awesome family you have... lovely piece this morning....
I needed this today. Thanks for the reminder that there are still good people out there! (Like you, too.) Love the gold walls. If only I could get my hubby away from beige. Oh wait...we're renting. Never mind.
a guy bought my Kale at the market the other day when I was in a rush and the checker was waiting to get the price. The guy goes, "go, I will pay for it, take your Kale!" It was helpful considering I was in a rush. I need to paint some walls. Although I love my walls, new walls would be nice.
How awesome is this story? Too awesome for words. Now I'm going to have that warm fuzzy feeling all day - thanks for sharing Courtney! =)
oh my goodness! another perk to having a blog! and even if you didnt live 30 minutes from ikea... to get through that whole factory store including the delicious meatballs and lingonberries... and then to leave empty-handed wouldve been a sin!
I was just thinking to myself as I read this post, I would have just bought the stuff if I were behind you in line, then that was the outcome of your delightful story. Thank you to the stranger whoever you are for Helping out Cjane, You made her feel how we'd all like to make her feel if seeing her in a bind!!!
THAT is the epitomy of kindness!!!!
gave me goosebumps! I did that once for a lady in one of those big box stores with obnoxiously long lines. We got to chatting in line and when she approached the cashier she suddenly realized she had forgotten her wallet at home. I could not let her leave without her birdseed (the birds needed it, and she had earned her spot at the cashier!). So I paid. It seemed like a no-brainer to me. I was so happy my boys were with me so they could learn it's the little gestures in life that go such a long way to being happy.
That woman will be rewarded 100 fold! What a wonderful story!
That gave me goosebumps too. I feel like that is how we should treat people. As if we do read their blogs everyday and see that they are just like us. They have struggles and joys and are good.
Whenever I'm behind a slow driver I pretend it's a family member of mine and just smile and get a big dose of patience.
Anyway, such a great story and I am so glad good things happen for you. May then continue.
That is just the best! Hooray for the lady who got an urge or "prompting",if you will, and followed through! I am convinced we are surrounded by good people everywhere we go. We all just need to drop the barricades and "do unto others" more often!
Wonderful, wonderful story about what happened to you in Ikea! That lovely lady will be rewarded over and over for her kindness.
P.S. I meant to comment on your posting of your letter to Nie Nie- it was so beautiful and made me wish that my sister lived near me, not 8 hours away! You are so fortunate to have family close by.
What a nice lady. I totally would have done the same, as I'm sure tons of your readers would. We love you.
I think your wall color is awesome, so far.
Wow. Wow. I am shocked at reading that. What a great thing that fellow shopper did for you! I once left my credit card on my computer, too, after online shopping, and my heart sank when I looked at that empty slot in my wallet! I now have the number memorized so I can online shop without taking it out. :)
By the way, I adore your blog.
I had something to share, I really did, but my thought process was interupted by my two year old who felt it was necessary to announce to me that dinosaur train is on. So....
Great post, gotta love other people where would this world be without them ;D
Thanks for sharing...I see service and kind deeds all around me too. I have yellow walls in my house. I love it!
LOVE the ikea story. I know she'll probably be reading this story and will be filled with such great memories of her service. Yeah for good people. Yeah for blogs who bring the strangers closer together.
This was a great post. And... I thought that fame would be all bad, but it isn't in this case, so good for you!
you are sooooooo in a blogging groove that i am loving!!!!
That's so wonderful! It renews my love of humanity.
Once a guy bought me a hot when I was pregnant and somehow couldn't locate my money in my purse. I was on my lunch break and will never forget his kindness.

This is why I love blogland. Good things happen because of it. I've never paid for anyone's purchases, but I always let people go ahead of me in line at Costco or the grocery store near our home if they look frazzled or have fewer items than me. Maybe that's something. I love it that we can look for opportunities to take care of one another in this world. It makes it a better place. And congratulations on getting your gold walls. What a nice family you have! :) :)
I read your blog but rarely comment. I just couldn't resist today! I am floored by the kindness of the women who helped you out. It is so nice to know people like that still exist!
That is so awesome! It made me cry a little, I don't know why! I love the gold walls too- very sexy.
who is the one with the adorable bob in the photos? did you get your hair cut??
So sweet of your brother in law. And lucy. I feel a musical number coming on...just for them. Amazing IKEA story. Really, really cool.
And oh my, the POSSIBILITIES with that gold wall. Love it. Can't wait to see your IKEA purchases hard at work with the gold.
That is a great story. It amazes me that people would do that which is sad because it should shock me when someone wouldn't. (if that made sense)
Love the walls, too.
That seriously brought tears to my eyes. The world needs more people like that, and frankly, more people like you ... she knew you would pay her back.
I love this post, thanks!
I love that people still do things like that. And I love that you bring attention to them.
That story made my day - and it was so nice & brave of her to offer and it was wonderful that you accepted the offer. You allowed her to do a good deed and now you can pass it on. Lots of people offer and we tell them no thanks and keep to ourselves.
Fantastic - thank you, stranger!
Not only did you help Courtney - but, you've given the "warm fuzzy feeling" to hundreds of other people as well. Good on you...
Needed that today - especially after having valet duty at school...
Love the post! PLEASE tell me the name of that shade of gold - the color is gorgeous!
That's so cool!
Reading your post today made me feel a little guilty about mine--whining and mad at telephone customer service.
But the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me . . . hm. I'll think about it.
I'll have to get back to you.
Nicest thing anyone ever did for me....Jesus died on the cross for me. Nothing can compare to that sacrifice...nothing whatsoever.
Ric aka Andrew blessed you, how do you repay this do you ask? By graciously accepting Ric's blessing so God can bless Ric....but you can do one thing...keep him forever before God's throne of grace. God will show you how to do an earthly repay if He chooses. Enjoy the gold walls. Hugs
Wow! There are good and nice people. I still believe good will always prevail. Thank heavens for tender mercies like that. What a story!
That was a wonderful thing that she did (and your brother-in-law too). You always hear about the bad in this world and so it is a nice surprise when someone does something like that.
Love the gold walls and I love the generosity. Can't wait to see the final reveal.
Pretty Pretty Gold Walls! And seriously.....the NICEST CUSTOMER EVER!! That woman deserves a permanent Gold star on her file in heaven!!!
I love how the gold walls seem to match the honey hue of your birch paneled walls. Perfect solution to not painting over the paneling!!! Bless you for that.
Nice lady at Ikea. And good of you to accept. reminds me that when I refuse my boyfriend's offer to pay for something unemployed lil old me can't afford (massage, chiropractor visits) that I would actually honor him by letting him - rather than insisting that I don't need his money.
Hmmmm.
When a new friend of mine found her car towed - in the middle of her worst personal financial crisis - I went to get her - and was going to take her to her ATM to get cash to release her car from impound. Thinking about it... I said, "Can you take that much out right now?"
Not without overdraft fees.
So I took the cash out of my account for her. I could float $200 at the time and she couldn't. No sense burdening herself more when she could just pay me back when things got better.
She actually honored ME by accepting my offer.
Very awesome person. Love the gold walls - absolutely beautiful - warmed me up on a chilly Minnesota day!!
Oh. Wow.
Wow! You have truly reached Celeb status. With your family AND your public. That is a great story.
To answer your question:
It is a perpendicular line connected to a skyscraper.
It doesn't seem possible but it is.
Right down to the very last skyscraper.
The coding is becoming very foggy and just plain wacky.
wow, indeed there are still GREAT people out there in this world! that's just awesome!
tara
i smiled the whole time i read.
seriously.
Oh! Those stories just warmed my little heart! I was the recipient of several acts of kindness back in December! It made me so happy and gave me a renewed hope in the world! This post is keeping that hope alive and well!
It is so amazing how kind and generous people can be...and how small the world is, thanks to the internet!
And I'm in love with your Gold Walls. And your couches.
I live in Chicago and generally walk or take public transportation. Saturday, I walked two miles to the grocery store and was on my way home, when it started raining. I missed the bus by a minute. Luckily, a very sweet cabbie from Algeria stopped for me and gave me a ride home. When I tried to pay him, he refused to take it. It was a very unexpected, generous gesture and it made my day. There really are some wonderful people in this world.
I can't believe the kindness of the Ikea lady! Tears are blurring my vision. I want to be like her. And you.
I love random acts of kindness. I like to receive and I lovd to give.
This is such a wonderful act of kindness and reminds me there is good in the world.
I actually sat in my chair, with my laptop, reading the entire thread you started one this and cried all the way through. It's beautiful.
Perhaps you could challenge all your readers to do a random act of kindess this week.

Just when I thought I couldn't adore your blogging more, I discover that I do - adore it - more...Thanks for that post - it's nice to be nice to the nice!
Love the gold walls. They are gorgeous. What a nice miracle to have such a kind person near you in line. That drive from Provo to Draper is much too far to run back for a debit card.
Loved this post. I can't believe how sweet that woman was to pay for your stuff so you didn't have to drive all the way home!!! And... way cool to have a brother-in-law who will paint a room for free. Love the gold. It's so bright and fun... .like you!
that is so nice :) nice blogging friends :)
hope you can visit and leave your mark on my blogs :)
my real story
my minute maid
years ago I had a basket full of food and had no check book when I went to pay, baby in cart, next town over. NO blog to help out. Stranger could see how flustered I was and came over and paid on the spot, gave me her address and said I trust you.
love that we can do and recieve like that in a world like ours.
gold rocks....
they named an 80's dance show for it, so im just sayin. NEST AWAY!
My heart is so full after reading your story! Thank you!
Yet another thing Ikea gets right! Nice customers! I love Ikea! We drive an hour to get to one and I've yet to go where I don't come out wanting to live in Sweden. As long as it looks like an Ikea store. Somehow they make it look fun to live in 300 sq feet of space.
Ceej--- Is there a way to get a book of m w/o having to meet with the missionaries? I would like to read it, but I do NOT want to meet with anyone.
just wondering. since you are the expert. :-)
Loved this! When you said "gold" walls before, I didn't realize you meant gold, as in metallic gold! Wow! I can see why your hubby hesitated, but the finished product looks amazing... guess he just needed to have faith in your vision!
I have done the same thing so many times... left my debit card in front of the computer- ugh! I need to just write the number down by the computer. Last time I was stuck with a cart full of groceries and an impatient cashier waiting for my husband to run it to me-
Good on the Ikea lady- what a lifesaver!
wow...sounds like wonderful things have happened! i am so happy for you that you were blessed with such wonderful people around you. love the gold walls.
Great story...thanks for sharing it!
Was that woman's name Kaylin Peters, because seriously, seriously...that's awesome (and she fits that description exactly).
And to ANONYMOUS: I believe NieNie would be more than happy to send you a Book of Mormon, just scroll down and you'll see it on the sidebar, can't miss it. Happy reading!

Love the walls, love the story, love nice people, love the blog - been an avid reader for over a year now. LOVE YOU! Thanks for sharing life each day. p.s. did you get your hair cut? It looks like it in those pics.
wow...i love that! and good for you for letting her do it!
My walls are Gold too! I LOVE IT! It is so nice and warm in this dismal winter gray we are enduring.
That woman restores my faith in humanity! Now, you just have to pay it forward. Some how.
I was at the grocery store with my 3 very small kids and as we were waiting to check out the kids and I were looking at the fresh cut flowers. My daughter (then age 2) and I were talking about them being pretty. The woman in front of me bought some and they really were lovely. After she paid she turned and said "Here, these are you for. They are from your kids". I went wide eyed, stammered thank yous (I was shocked) and she smiled and said have a nice day. I'd never met her before and I've never seen her since. Another time when someone had trouble with their card I paid for it, remembering this woman. She REALLY made my day/week/etc.
