MD with The Chief last April
Really weird, I know.
But it should be said, it is not the Idahoans. It's just Idaho.
This year I decided to write a list of things I wanted to do on our short visit to Twin Falls to make things more pleasant for myself. I like to second-hand shop (because the pickings are so fresh), visit the new Twin Falls Temple and eat slabby, greasy food. There you have it. La list!
After a day of scouting out some pretty cool housewife dresses from circa 1962 at the local DI, I was ready for some grub. My mother-in-law Grumma swears by this joint on the other side of town called Norm's. Fresh cut fries, soaked steak fingers, free refills--the whole bottles of tums please.
We met up as a family on location. Me, Chup and the little guy. Grumma and Popeye. Chup's brother MD (as I call him), his wife Kentucky and their progidy six year old Phun.
Walking into Norm's is akin to entering in an old western tavern where everyone knows each other and are comfortably conversing in jovial tones. The mood abruptly stops when you--the stranger--come through the doors. Silence and staring up and down. Staring up and down. Made worse by the fact I was wearing my Miz Mooz boots over my leggings.
Staring up and down and heavy chewing.
I ordered fish and chips hoping for the crispiest plate in the whole Gem State. Rather Chup ordered them for me, but that's a long story and not exactly imperative to this story.
As we were finishing up our crumbs, we heard a loud thud at the bar.
Then the waitress,
"Someone call 911!"
From what we could tell, a patron had fallen off his barstool and was having some sort of seizure. The layout of the cafe obstructed our view, but we could hear gasps for air, choking and the terrible sounds of death.
This all was happening fast, like it always does.
In this moment, without hesitation, Chup pulled the table out of his little brother's way. MD dashed out of his seat and was at the patron's side reassuring him--and the other diners--that he was there to help.
"I am a physician." We heard him announce--with a calm, quiet demeanor.
And for the ten minutes that followed (ten minutes which equaled an eternity)(ten minutes seems like a long time to wait for a response of a smaller town, no?) we could hear MD helping the man while he experienced a grand mal seizure.
Right there in Norm's.
And I thought to myself, how often do doctors eat at Norm's? It is the kind of establishment that Health Care professionals would generally recommend keeping a healthy distance. But on this day, at this moment, this man went to have a hamburger and had a seizure. And there just happened to be a doctor a couple booths over who knew how to prevent choking and stay calm.
You know where I am going with this, don't you?
These are the tender mercies of a good God in heaven.
I am always amazed.
By the way of a post script, while we were in Idaho, The Chief began to battle some awful flu. One miserable night, MD saved us time and money by diagnosing our son with an ear infection, called in a round of antibiotics and went with Chup to pick it up at Walgreens. Then, when we mistakenly left the bottle in the fridge in Idaho, MD called in a second round for us in Utah. The Chief has never been better.
He loves his uncle dearly.
P.P.S. We'd love to have you join with us in prayers for my sister Stephanie who is having more surgery tomorrow in Arizona. The next few months are going to be grueling as she works her way back to better health.
Thanks. Again.

74 Pieces of Opinion:
Did he live?
I hope so. He didn't die at Norm's anyway.
Reminds me of the day my husbands cousin and family went to a new church for the first time - she is a GP (family doctor). During the service a man collapsed with a major heart attack. G and TWO other doctors rushed to do CPR, whilst the rest of the congregation prayed. The other 2 doctors were both seniors at the local hospital. The man made a full recovery - he was back at the church within a month. Such a blessing.
Wow he's cute! MD's not in bad shape either!!
My brother is a doc, and rarely can take a plane trip without some emergency happening, and the inevitable announcement "is there a doctor on the plane?"
Isn't it amazing how God works? Thanks for sharing your story. My prayers are with your sister and your family. This must be an anxious time for everyone. I'm sure she'll be focusing on the end result. She has such an incredible support system in all of you. :) God bless.

firstly md sounds lika cool kinda guy, and secondly, stephanie gets my prayers ten-fold, i never thought i would be worried by something happening so many thousands of miles away from me, but stephanie has touched me, and she gets all my prayers, cus she's awesome.
Wow. Amazing story. I was once at an Octoberfest celebration when something similar happened during the Chicken Dance. Sounds like it could be an SNL skit, but it was really quite eerie.
Tender mercies, indeed.
Awesome story. Tender mercies, for sure.
My prayers are with Stephanie & her family - all included. I hope she finds some tender mercies to sustain her through this difficult, painful time. I know you guys sure are one of mine.
I love when you post things about Twin. I know I have said this before but I spent the first 16 years of my marriage in Twin. My hubs grew up there and kind of knows Chup, more like his family. Anyways, it is my home and I miss it terribly. But here in AZ, is home now just not my "home town" ya know what I mean? Anyways 2 things. One I always saw Norm's but in all 16 years I had never eaten there, funny huh? I was waiting with baited breath to see where you were going to eat and when you said Norm's I was thinking "ohhhhhh yeah.....that place.
Second thing, thanks for asking us to keep Steph in our prayers. I needed to be needed today, just a titch more than usual. So thank you. I think this has been my longest comment ever.
Off.
Awesome.
I'm glad MD was there for that man - I'm sure he never suspected he had a diving appointment that day :) Very cool!
or rather a DIVINE appointment LOL!!
My sister was probably one of those people that looked at you when you walked in. She eats at Norms all the time!
I love the Lord and all his works! And what is with babes, ear infections and the Christmas holidays. My sweet Marley had an ear infection and just about every other kid I know. Hope teh Chief is feeling better
Good thoughts and prayers are headed Stephanie's way!
What a blessing to have a doctor in the family. And an auto mechanic is pretty helpful too!
My husband is a physician which makes some things REALLY convenient. Like prescription drugs and the occasional "hey- what's this bump on my leg all about?" But even better...? Before he was a doc, he worked as a heating and air conditioning person for his family's business.
So get this: My husband is not only the best diagnostic clinician and beloved town physician I know but he can repair most ANYTHING around my home AND fix all toys.
THAT is beyond sexy.
Thanks for always making my mornings!
Prayers going out to your sister.
xoxo

Ah Twin Falls. My old stomping grounds. I'm pretty sure you're lucky YOU made it out of there alive wearing what you were ;)
I loved that talk by Elder Bednar. He and President Uchtdorf are my new favorite speakers. I'll definitely keep Stephanie in my prayers. :)
Prayers. I'm on it.
Another story that touched my heart Courtney - I truly believe MD was meant to be there that day AND my continued prayers are with Stephanie and your whole family.
I also am a Twin native who outgrew its fashion backwardness. Unless they were cowboy boots with Wranglers and a Stetson, girl, you're lucky to be alive yourself. Weird to picture MD as an MD. I still see him as a toe-headed primary kid. We all grow up sometime, I suppose.
Thinking of Nie and all of your family today.
Prayers and appreciation, coming right up.
What a blessing...
Stephanie is in my thoughts and prayers, and I'm blogging about it later today to spread the word. The more prayer and positive thinking, the better, non?
Love your blog, by the way!
she is in the prayer circles here in AZ, we love you guys and your family and will continue to pray for you all, love ya tons

I just started reading a new Book of Mormon, fresh eyes you know. I have been thinking alot about tender mercies. This story touched me in a way that I was looking for and needing. Thank you!
I will keep your sister in my thoughts and prayers! Wishing them the best. :)
Yikes, how scary!
And of course we will all be keeping Stephanie in our thoughts and prayers
I love tender mercy stories. Seeing the Lord's hand in such a dramatic way is a sweet experience.
Also, I totally understand what you mean about Idaho. Rexburg feels like home to me now, but Idaho in general is just strange.
Very cool!
My sister-in-law is a pediatrician and she gets her share of phone calls from all of us new mothers! :) Definitely advantageous having a dr in the family!
Prayers are going out for Stephanie!
My brother, Dr. Ben as we affectionately call him, had to answer the "Is there a doctor on board" call when someone was having an issue with too much insulin on a flight from SLC to New York. He was in his traveling grubbies, had his ipod and Stephen King book in hand to answer the call. Embarrassed to not be dressed in his professional garb, he was happy to help.
Absolutly tender mercies. I am constantly amazed at how God works his little miracles in our lives.
Our prayers are with Stephanie.
Tender Mercies indeed! They are all around us! I testify to that! Doctors are an amazing breed! They are What would we do without them?
Oh, and Lucky Kentucky!!! What a good looking guy she has!
On a serious note...my heart and prayers are with Stephanie. She sounded so brave in her last post. It has to be terrifying to face a new round of pain and time away from her family. Let her know how much we all love her for her courage and example of enduring faith!
I live in Burley--Heyburn actually. I grew up in Maryland. Imagine how I feel.
I believe the tender mercies of the Lord are all around us--in small and large things.
It is amazing isn't it? The timing of things, the people there, the things that could've easily gone wrong but didn't. What a blessing from a loving Father in Heaven, He puts all the instruments there and it is up to us to use them. Like MD. What a good man!
So thankful that MD was there to help. Those "tender mercies" (His people being WITH us in love) are literally a lifeline in the dark places of life, as you well know from the events of the past year or so. That is how God often revealed His presence to me when Katie was ill.
Prayers are being prayed for Nie. Blessings to you, Kentucky and all of your family.
I laughed as I read your account of walking into Norms and immediately knowing that you were the outsider. My brother and I were in Nauvoo on a Sunday afternoon and starving. We wandered into "Dotties", the only place open, and it was immediately clear that we were not one of them. Literally, everyone stopped and stared. They fed us, but not willingly. My brother's favorite part of the day was the t-shirt with a picture of the Nauvoo temple gracing the very large beer belly (I mean that literally) of a guy playing pool.
How is it that I live in Eden (very near Twin) and have never even heard of Norm's? Not that that sounds like a bad thing... Again, thanks for your thoughts and my prayers have been with your sis and your family :)
Just want you to know I'll be praying for Stephanie. I recently read her whole story on her blog (I know, I'm a little late - but almost exactly the same time she had her accident, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and I've had year and a half from hell - but nothing like Stephanie's). She is an amazing woman - and so are you. I'm sure everyone would love to have a family like yours - sisters that rush in and take care of things when something bad happens. I'm just so impressed with your whole family. I have a blog called Incredible Women, and I would love to feature you, and Stephanie (as soon as she is able). You are all in my prayers.

I heart miz mooz!!! Stephanie is always in our prayers!! :)
God is Good! Stephanie is in my prayers.
Stephanie is in my prayers today for recovery beyond expectations.
Can someone tell me what are Miz Mooz????????
Definitely tender mercies at work...
PS-Is her name really Kentucky?
Have you ever tried Boise? I bet you would like it...despite your feelings towards Idaho.
When you come to visit, your list should include Lawdy. Serious. Trouble girl. trouble.ok, kinda kidding, kinda.
Wow, just saw them talking about your blog on Studio 5. You're famous(er)! Get ready for even more fans to come your way. :)
P.S.
Idaho strange? Well it is after all the home of Napoleon Dynamite. Love the people though.
So interesting... I just started following your blog and, as luck would have it, used to live in Twin Falls until 6 months ago. Now, I am struggling to adjust to Arizona and so can't imagine how you could have "issues" with my hometown. ;o) However, knowing Norms I can see where someone might have some kind of episode there. Next time visit the great LDS bookstore just around the corner from Norms--Bell's Books. Go over there and bolster your faith that God does even visit Norms when the need arises. Go Idaho!! I miss you. P.S. Love your blog and your sister's blog. I will pray for her to find strength for the surgery. I know she's been through a lot.
Is his name really MD? There are doctors who came from Idaho? Weird. :)
wow and I thought my post were longwinded, LOL
I am from Twin and went to High school and graduated with MD (and Kentucky). I know he is a good guy and glad to know what he is up to, saving lives!
Ha, I just blogged about a Miz Mooz shoe sale at Luna Boston :-) Limited sizes- $18.75. Go here if you are interested.

Glad to hear the man didn't die there. Stephanie as always is in my prayers.
As always Stephanie will be in my prayers!
I'm an Idaho girl, living in Arizona....I have to say I miss the snow. It's 80 degrees today! Love your blog and will pray for your sis, of course. I remember a trip back to Boise from Utah, my 2 year old was so sick. I asked her what she thought could make her feel better and her little response was simply, "Jesus". Heavenly Father HEARS our prayers, doesn't he.
Next time try LaCasita, my favorite little Mexican shop in Twin Falls. Even if someone needed MD you would have been able to see what was going on. It's not Idaho it's the wind!
MyMom had a stroke on a flight to Las Vegas and they made an annocement asking for a doctor. Small world--my Mom's doctor was on the plane. Thank God! He knows us all so well and it was perfect. We ended up stayig in Las Vegas for 6 weeks while she was recovering enough to get home to Seattle, but we were able to fly her home.
I will have Stephanie in my prayers tomorrow. I'm having a medcal procedure (day surgery) tomorrow but I will be praying for her. I have added her to my Bible Study groups prayer chain too for the next few months.

C Jane, I especially loved that story since I've had a few Grand Mals myself (4-5 over the past 15 years). Except for the possible #5, I've always been within feet of an EMT or someone trained to deal with such emergencies. God is good!
Stephanie will be in my prayers.
My kids tend to get ear infections only on the weekends, or if we are out of town.
What's with that?
We don't have MD in the fam so we usually have to put up with hour long waits at Instacare, or a very long weekend away from home.
Darn kids.
Wishing Nie much luck and sending prayers.
Keeping your sister Stephanie and her husband and kiddos in our prayers that all goes well for her this go around -
When people need a doctor but there is not one there and they die, did God chose not to distribute a tender mercy?
I'm asking sincerely and respectfully.
My husband did two tours in Iraq and returned home safely. It bothers me when people tell me that God took mercy on us because then what does that mean about our friend who was killed? Or the friend who committed suicide shortly after his return?
I've been an Idahoan for almost 14 years. I think it rocks! :)
I had a similar experience last year - my girlfriend and I were out for lunch and just as we were finishing she keeled over and started seizing in the middle of the cafe we were in. No history of seizures! Talk about scary! Luckily for me (and her) I have plenty of experience with seisures as my mom is epileptic and I knew what to do and how to keep everyone calm until the paramedics showed up. She is fine now and enough time has passed that we can joke about the fact that she had just finished eating a chicken "seizure" wrap for lunch along with a cup of coffe called: "jamaica me crazy"!!!
i really love stories like this....renews faith again and again doesn't it?
Fresh Hell,
You made me think.
I think it would still be a tender mercy because he died under calm, peaceful circumstances with a doctor who knows and respects both life and death.
And not to make light of the situation, but perhaps it would give the other patrons a desire to change their lifestyle. Maybe even diet?
Who knows.
But death is almost always a tender mercy, in my book anyway.
Unfortunately there is a choking hazard when the person seizing has a mouth full of Norm's Eggs and Hamburger...
Thanks for the post C.
-MD
And a doctor is also a good thing when the man is eating alone and no one knows him or what his health history is. Plus he fell pretty hard to the ground.
Also, it was a blessing for us patrons who were witnessing something startling to know a dr. was around.
I hope MD got his fries for free!
Prayers for Nie - I think of her and of you every day.
C jane.. I read your blog daily and I love your words. They make me think and they make me laugh and they make me want to meet you and talk to you!
Anyhow..I am a nurse at Primarys and worked with the MD when he was a resident. He was so great and so easy to work with. How nice to have him in your family.
Thanks for sharing your writing..
The focus should not be on heterosexuality, or homosexuality, or "lifestyle"....
The issue is Surrogacy. A woman has chose to be a surrogate.
Only in a conservative State is this a moral dilemma.
ironically I feel the same way about utah (especially Utah County) that you do about Idaho. Funny huh?
