While I Wait For My Hair to Start Falling Out

There are too many hormones swishing
around in this body of mine for me to be able to write anything comprehensible. I range from pleasure to paranoia in the space of five minutes. My thoughts are like bubbles that form and burst in rapid succession. What if Chup cheats on me? I love lemon pie! If the big earthquake hits do we have enough water to drink and bathe? Asparagus! It's a weird existence, this postpartum stuff.

For this reason, I'd like to thank my guest posters this week. They have been delightful--Catherine, Stephanie, Azucar I love those women in my life. Chup was supposed to post on Tuesday in response to the many questions we've received about our birth story. Would we do it at home again? Did we prefer the unmedicated? Is it worth talking to the husband about to convince him to give it a try? But Chup wasn't feeling poetry in that moment and hopes to write that post in the near future.

Of course, if you ask me (which many of you did) I would reply (all caps ) YES. OH YES. TO ALL OF IT. But you might not believe me because of the aforementioned hormones. Best leave that post up to the Chupa.

Speaking of giving birth. Remember Ever? I call her the Prize of the County Fair. I also call her my Warm Sugar Cube. And I really like how so many things rhyme with Ever (clever, never, weather/whether) so that all my made up tunes and silly poetry is easily improvised. She's just El Lovely, Captain.

The other day my friend Wendy of Blue Lily fame, showed up in town for a couple hours to take photos of my gal. I lounged on the couch while Wendy swaddled and posed my sleepy daughter. Perhaps it was the best afternoon I have spent since Ever dropped into our lives. I fell in love with her even more, swoon, swoon, swoon.

And oh how I adore that Wendy too. By the time she left, I felt more confident in motherhood. She taught me--among many things--the fine art of swaddling, and I do believe it is an art. My babies break the swaddle I was formerly taught seconds after the wrapping. Turns out, I need to be using stretchy blankets and adding more layers to the baby burrito. Wendy also helped infuse in me the power of making choices in motherhood based on intuition and not fear--this is invaluable.

And so is her photography.

What? Would you like to see my swaddled Ever?

Here you go (you might be tempted to kiss the screen, warning!)

Thanks Wendy, as always.

I follow your blog regularly, but never comment.

First let me say "Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful baby girl!" I've not done that yet because, well, I never comment. But she is adorable, and the pictures are wonderful, so this time I am. I love the last picture where she is swaddled in the blanket with hearts. My first thought was, "Oh, she's a little peanut!" then "She looks just like I'd imagine a little pixie baby would look." Cute, cute, cute!! Thank you so much for writing and sharing your life. Even with lurkers like me. Again congratulations you and your family!

Don't worry, the more kids you have you still have doubts, but they don't last as long and the nurturing instinct kicks in and you don't struggle as much. The Hormone thing, it eventually passes, I think?!

OH my goodness! You have produced another beauty!
The picture of Ever lying on her front on the quilt made my heart melt. I actually said AWWW outloud. She is gorgeous. Congratulations. x

a.men said...

She is GORGEOUS! I love that face and that cute nose! Oh my! I bet you hold her and snuggle her all day! I am almost half way to meeting my third bundle of joy. There is a piece of me that can't wait and the other piece that feels like there is not enough time to ready myself, and my home before this new one arrives.

You are one lucky lady Courtney. I asked my husband about having this one at home and he about fell off his chair! Given that my first was a c-section, there's that whole risk of uterus rupturing. Probably not something any smart midwife would want to deal with at home.

Now that I have rambled enough, she is absolutely precious! Enjoy!

Amy The Mom said...

beautiful...i not only wanted to kiss my screen, i wanted to eat it up :) she's a deliciously gorgeous baby!!

I rarely post but that first picture of Ever, swaddled in red, looking up and out of the corners of her beautiful eyes, sigh, incredibly beautiful, so sweet. Congrats on your baby girl!

Curly said...

She's so sweet, Courtney. What a beautiful profile! I love her little delicate nose. My baby girl is already 5 months, and I can't believe how much she's already filled out within such a short time. I know I don't need to tell you to enjoy every second :)
As far as the hair falling out business, I swear it gets more severe with each baby. This time around I actually developed quasi-bald spots. My husband's eyes flew open when I came out of a public restroom sobbing b/c I had patches of hair missing. Then again, maybe that was due to hormones, too.

Oh my gosh! What a cutie!!! Congratulations! Good luck on the transition into 2. 2 was easy for me, in fact 3 was easy for me. It was that #4 that kicked my butt! And yet, I'm at it again with #5 in the oven. I've never done the at-home birth, but I have had two epidurals that didn't take effect. So I am right there with you on the pain spectrum. I loved how you described it, every feeling that I couldn't put into words was eloquently spoken in that post. I am absolutely in love with that hat! I hope that's going to be a topic on Dear CJane, I want to buy it. If it's home made then I need instructions so I can get my sister to make it. =) Love your blog!

But...she's already smiling in every picture! And those cheeks! It almost makes me want to have another, but it would have to be a girl, born in the spring, and as cute as Ever. Sounds kind of like a gamble to me.

Moving on!

Ever is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Those pictures are wonderful. you are so blessed to have such great people in your life that love to do nice things like picture taking for you.

The hair falling out part, for me, probably the WORST part of pregnancy, and that is saying a lot. I lose so much freaking hair, I have nothing left. It gives me pause to getting pregnant again. Except that the GOOD hair days DURING the pregnancy almost make up for it.

Anyway, good luck with the postpartum crazies! So glad to have you writing. I miss you when you're not around.

Oh my, I love her! (Ever, that is) Beautiful photos!!

And I agree, the swaddle is a fine art. It took me until my 4th babe (now already 5 months old...sniff, sniff...) to finally learn how to do it properly. And once I did, that sweet baby girl just melted. They truly do love to be swaddled up tight.

My favorite swaddling blankets are the Aden + Anais blankets. Large, stretchy and oh, so breathable.

P.S.
Love the post partum brain. I remember well. But now, 5 months later, my hair is falling out ;)

Why you go do that? WHY?

My baby is 6 next week and it is pretty much a full time (and very exhausting) job talking myself out of getting pregnant again, preferably before next week.

Now you have taken all rational thought out of the equation. Your baby is perfection. Perfection, I say. Want.To.Squish.MUST.Yum.yum.

What can I say that hasn't already been said?

Let me just say that ever since I read some of the dedication letters from your Mom, Chup and your family I just admire you even more as a mother. Your patience is remarkable. The time you take to go on a walk, read a book, let the Chief color on walls...it's so easy yet not many mothers take time to do it and you are such a great example to me. I am honored to know you, and even more honored that you let me into your life {via web}.

Ever is beautiful! I love her name and think it so daring of you and Chup to name her that. Congrats on your new addition to the family. Thanks for sharing your birth story it was very empowering for me to read it. I appreciate your braveness to share something so spiritual and personal to inspire other women like myself.

OH.MY.GOODNESS.

Seriously. I'm crying. Stupid cycle & wanting another child. I'm a lame mess.

I really might perish from the cuteness. I am dying for a pic of The Chief and Ever!!! How is he taking to being a big brother? I love me some Chief. Next to my own little man, whom the gym daycare people have nicnamed The Boss, I think The Chief is just the bees knees.

You have quite a responsibility, now, raising a miraculous female. Good luck on your journey. She's amazing.

the last pictures is precious. I hate post partum hormones but I do love what they do to my hair and skin...amazing glow.

The worst for me is when I entertain thoughts of death...that someone will die and then what will I do. Post partum hormones are crazy. I hope you feel better soon.

Ever is just breath-taking! That first picture just can't be real!

I didn't know swadling was real (I thought it was a term out of the bible--'they found him wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger') until the sweet elderly lady in the hospital taught me how after my first child was born. It is definately something that must be learned, and practiced. Not sure I ever got it right.

Yes, I kissed the screen--right smack on the photo of Ever with the red blanket and the sweet pointy knitted cap. Kissed it a couple times. What a sweetie!!!!!

Thanks so much for the smile you just gave me!

OMG! She's about the cutest little baby girl I've ever seen!! You make beautiful humans. :-)

Ooh, yes, getting the right swaddle is life changing, isn't it? The swaddle taught to me in the hospital was nuttin' compared to that of a friend of my grandmother, who happened to be a former nurse and birthed ten babies of her own (three of them ON HER OWN at home with no one but her no-good husband in the next room -- she's a soldier of the highest caliber!), who went about the business of swaddling my four-day-old babe the proper way. Saved me during his long crying jags thanks to the C-O-L-I-C.

And, of course, Ever is gorgeous. But you already know that. :D

Oh sweetness and light! That Ever is just a little bundle of what makes this world good. And that hat?!? I almost can't stand the pictures of her wearing it.

Sending lots of good wishes and joyful thoughts to the Kendrick familia.

She is truly a beautiful baby! Enjoy this wonderful time in your life, hormones and all. They grow much, much too fast. My babies are 31 and 24.

"My name is Ever. And I'm in a bowl. Cause I'm a baby and I'm cute. Ta-da!"

That is a direct quote from my baby girl who is now 6, the amazing Nor. We think Ever is too much cuteness.
love from seattle.

so sweet. makes me sooo excited for my new baby to come!! can't wait to snuggle him and take cute pictures of him. my kids love to swaddle. sometimes it seems like my husband and i are the only ones who do this with our kids. what are other people doing? it's a miracle cure for fussy newborns.

i don't know if you're joking, but my hair actually does fall out after i have babies. sometimes, for a really long time. with my daughter, it was at least 2 years of my hair falling out. i'm surprised i didn't go bald. it's normal, they tell me. and so is PPD. i hope it doesn't plague you badly. as long as you know you can pull yourself out of it... ;)

best wishes! ;)
