Breakfast is Now Served

I had to fight the urge this morning to rub butter all over Ever Jane, powder her with confectioner's sugar, plop a dollop of vanilla pudding on her head and eat her for brunch.

I know, not all mothers come with a tempting sense of parental cannibalism. I learned this when I wrote about desiring to eat The Chief smothered in a peanut curry sauce when he was five months old. Readers were like "Ewwww c jane. That's just weird."

When I read those comments I started to feel a little insecure, was it wrong of me want to ingest a baby between two buns slathered in barbecue sauce and melted swiss cheese? Also, lettuce, pickle and tomato? Maybe bacon? Uppity mustard? So I did what any sensible insecure person would do, I googled "animals who eat their young."

Turns out, humans are not on the list of species who eat their young. So maybe I am weird. BUT it also turns out no one really knows why evolution created filial cannibalism in the first place. Maybe extra protein? My hypothesis is this: if the scientific community could've seen Ever Jane this morning they'd have their answer.

Because mmmmmm. Mmmmmm. Mmmmm.

Stop all studies! We figured it out!

Is what they'd say.

Anyway.

If Ever grows up and doesn't like me one day (it happens, you know) I'll quickly remind her,

"You're lucky I didn't eat you when I had the chance."

In an omelette, dripping with syrup, washed down with a fresh glass of orange juice.

Like a mama wolf spider at IHOP.

I am c jane and I resist the urge to eat my young. Seasoned with Lowry's. Garlic butter. Sprinkled with Parmesan.

Oh, I'd be noshing 24/7 on those adorable chubby cheeks, too!!! :) Made me think back to Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" for a moment! :) I love your wit, sense of humor, and creative talents- literary, fashion, photographic, and tasty offspring to boot! :)

I love your blog and I LOVE Ever! I love her name. Love, love, love it. But don't worry. I won't copy it because my last name is Gross. That's right I'm Marie Gross and will never have an Ever Gross.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who also gets the desire to munch on my young. LOL - I often find myself nibbling on my toddler - she's just too cute for words! when I was little my Mom used to tell my brother and I that if there were ever a famine that Mother's are allowed to eat their children! Guess its an urge that runs in the family :)

She is beautiful. I nosh on my sweet baby's thighs daily. Is it wrong to snack?

Nancy said...

My desire to nibble on my son when he was a baby turned into a funny (to us) bedtime routine which included a sniff behind each ear and a nibble on the tip of his nose and chin - with a couple of kisses in between. Finally at 16 he decided enough!

Reader-Advisor said...

I know exactly how you feel. My sister-in-law and I have had extensive conversations about how we want to eat my youngest. She is just too delicious and dissolves into giggles when we gently nibble on her. She is impossible to resist. She's almost 2 and it is still a daily battle to not devour her.

Diana...aka...MeMe said...

Adorable... and very, very edible!

Hel said...

Not weird at all. Although I can't say I need to season my child when I go to chomp down on her chubby arms or cheeks.

Tiny little nibbles if I can get away with it...

Kim said...

Ever is adorable and quite nibbalicious!

Mallory said...

Ever is so cute! I don't have a cannibalistic urge, but when my son was born, I couldn't get enough of sniffing his head. I probably could have sniffed him right out of existence! And sniffing the baby's head is the thing I'm looking forward to most for the baby I'm expecting right now!

I think the bums are the best part. So nice and plump and juicy. I understand you Jane. She is lovely!

She looks so much like Nie's Gigs!
I'd have to nibble those cheeks too! :)

She is most delicious-looking!

Oh, I understand. I always wanted to nibble my son's little neck and munch on those sweet fat, ham feet! But then he got bigger, sweatier and now I just want to wash that neck and feet!

Enjoy these times.

M said...

I periodically had the desire to ingest my child as well.

And then I thought about it and here's what I think.

I think there's an instinctual part of us that wants them back inside where they can be ours and only ours again, where we can keep them safe and secure from the outside influences. And since we can't return them to the womb, we move on to the next way to bring them back under the protection of our bodies.

She's adorable, seriously, well done on the second kid.

Tempest Ahoy said...

I know just how you feel! We even play nibble-kiss on babies' hands and feet at our house <3

The Renee Chronicles said...

NOT weird! For the following two reasons. 1. My bestest friend knawed on her all 4 of her babies eyebrows aka Fur Worms. 2. My Brother still says to his kids he should have eaten them when they were younger while there bones were still soft. Its love, don't be insecure. We should all be so lucky that someone wants to nibble our eyebrows.

ClistyB said...

You'd be surprised how well she tastes just plain, straight out of the box. Young, almost six year-old boys' earlobes are the best. Especially if you can get 'em right before they ripen into kindy-gardners.

Joanna said...

That's not weird and you're not crazy. I have to resist the urge to eat cheeks (both types) at my house all the time. They're so delicious. I just want to take a bite and hold it in my mouth for a moment and enjoy the perfectness. I totally get you.

Laura Jane said...

I see your problem.

Make my order with butter and maple syrup.

That child is completely edible. Surely she's big enough to share between two portions. Or I could just have the leftovers......

(slurp, drool)

jack said...

Oh you've really made me giggle with this post. She is adorable!

Johanna said...

Don't worry, you are not alone. My first instinct whenever I see something cute is to put it in my mouth! Ever since I was a kid. I choked on a Polly Pocket once.

Thanks, CJane!

I've never had the desire to eat my young (ewww, cjane, that's just weird) but your uber sweet baby photos do make me want to have another baby.

Lynn said...

I had the same thoughts with my own three. I still say it to my kids and they are now 9, 8, & 6. I tell them that they look soooo yummy I could eat them up!

Bethany said...

"I'm gonna eat you up" is a CONSTANT promise around here! Sweet chubby cheeks are simply irresistible. She is a DOLL!

I eat my chubbers too!!! You are totally normal Cjane!!!! those chubs on Ever are to die for!!! Dig in Mama!!!

Shorty said...

You crack me up! I used to love to lip-nibble my son's gums when he was too little to have teeth or know how to give kisses. That was the sweetest feeling to me. Then those little toofers came in. My sweet nibbles had to subside. I think I resorted to lip-nibbling his chubby cheeks and neck at that point.

m&msmommy said...

She is SOOO adorable! I could eat her too. But I am "child eating type" :) I tell my daughter practically every single day that I could eat her up, while I nibble on her cheeks and/or her thighs, SERIOUSLY! :)

Sometimes you just can't help it! :)

sarahandmatt said...

haha I loved this post! Ever is a doll and yes so yummy!

I STILL say to my kids (ages 4 and 2) - "can I eat you for dessert, your so yummy!"

They laugh and say "no Mommy you can't eat us silly!" They think it's hilarious!

I am not sure when the urge goes away...maybe when they become teenagers?! ;)

Carrie said...

JUST THIS MORNING I asked my 16-month-old if I could eat him for breakfast. People think I am weird when I say things like that, too. In fact, I think I've scared my sister a few times when I told her my nephew was so cute I could eat him...with ketchup.

Ever is definitely delicious! I don't know how you resist those chins!

Its good to know I'm not alone :)

amyrose said...

I have the same urge, so I feel better knowing I'm not the only one. My husband gives me the strangest looks when I ask him if I can just have one small nibble of baby. I'll have to show him this, he'll see it's perfectly normal. Can two people make something normal?

I have always been about wanting to eat my kiddos - ooh that does sound strange. I had mentioned how edible my daughter was on the first day of a vacation with my sister in law who was in her early twenties. She looked at me like I was insane, but by the end of the week she said, "You know that comment you made about wanting to eat her? I totally get it now." :) And don't even get me started on how I call my son butterball....

You know what is funny? I was just thinking about writing a post regarding something along the lines of: If You Use The Word Yummy To Describe A Baby Then You Can't Hold Mine. But then I remembered that my sister in law calls her babies Yummy all the time and I knew she'd be highly offended if she read such a post, so I decided to keep it to myself. Perhaps I should simply refer her to you post and she will see that she is in good company.

However - that sweet double chin? Beautiful.

natalie said...

Oh, my. If you don't eat her, then I will! She is just delicious!
I don't think you are weird. I felt the same way about my babies. I just wanted to nibble them all the time! One of my best friends from high school and his wife just had their first baby, and he emailed saying he had the urge to just gobble his little son up...but decided against it because he felt the "ultimate outcome would be very disappointing." HA!

I too have the desire to eat my children. My youngest, who is almost 3 is so luscious that I just want to devour her but then she reminds me "Momma I'm not a cupcake I'm Lella!"

You know, I'm not one to want to eat my own children. I think it's because they never had the extra plump-ness to them. I've always wanted to with others though. Your Ever looks very yummy. Does that sound too bad?
You are so funny though. Thanks for putting a smile on my face this morning. Just try not to eat her...you can be strong. :)

Trish and Greg said...

I get what you mean! And it never seems to end. I could "snack" on my girls, and they're all grown up now. Toss in some strawberry scented shampoo, and, I'll admit, there's this wild impulse to just gobble, gobble, gobble! Ummmmm! Yummy girls! Lucky for them I just resort to hugs and big breaths of their sweetness.

Are you weeding out the comments from readers who think this is gross? I've never seen so many people unanimously admit to this before. While I sometimes have an urge to give a baby a little nibble, the mental image of babies covered in condiments (or of you eating your baby) is quite disturbing. Yes, I get that you're not actually going to eat Ever (I think). It's still just...disturbing.

Is it so wrong that my sister and I sometimes feel the urge to squeeze the little cuties till their heads pop...or just grab 'em and throw 'em cause their so cute? We've even been known to say that we just wanna punch 'em because they're so cute...sounds pretty demented when I type it out (and no, we've never actually followed through on any of these feelings).
I'm not quite sure what you would call this sickness of ours, but we recently discovered that a mutual friend in our Bible study has the same thoughts and feelings (again, never acted upon). It's nice to know it's not some kind of genetic disorder.
We've handled lots of babies over the years (many years of babysitting, plus our own little bugs) and they've all survived without a scratch. Thank goodness for impulse control!

I'm not appalled that you want to eat your young. I am confused, though...you believe in evolution? (Please note, I'm not Mormon. I'm a non-denominational Christian).

Miss Ever is adorable with her chubby cheeks and bright cherry eyes. I can see why you want to gobble her up :)

I had to stop nibbling on my daughter's cheeks when giving her kisses after she started biting me.
Sometimes I think maybe the biting isn't so bad if I can just give her nibbly cheek kisses.
So I can totally relate...

I just like munching on baby cheeks. And Ever's look very munchable. She does look a bit worried to me though...

I am with you on wanting to eat your young!! I want to eat my sons feet and cheeks. No condiments, just the sweet taste of baby.

I can't believe how much she looks like Nie's Nicholas!

You may have already seen this, but someone else shares your affinity for child munching.

LOL!!! Love the pics of Miss Ever! She is so adorable. Love her to pieces.

CRACKS.ME.UP how many people take you so literally. ha ha :)Eating children? Evolution? Seriously.

Sometimes I think you have fun sticking stuff in for the purpose of stirring them up. I know I would. Honestly, people. Get a sense of humor!

Love you, C.

I always had to fight the urge to snack on my son. I would kiss, kiss, kiss his little toes and they looked so sweet and tasty and then, well, it's hard to stop!

So, no, you're not strange. And, yes, Ever is especially delicious looking.

I just can't help taking nibbles of my own baby girl. I really might just gobble her up one of these days.

Ever is so adorable. I LOVE those cheeks!

Here's what I used to sing to my now 17 year old daughter:

Imogen, Imogen dumpling
Steam her in the pot
Butter her
And sugar her
And gobble up the lot

You need to add a cooking method to really stir things up :)

At Christmas time when my Little's drumsticks were nice and plump, i really really wanted to take our family picture around a formally set dinner table with the baby dressed like a turkey and all of us with our silverware up and ready to dig in to that juicy bird. I told someone and they thought it was weird. I totally get this post.

She is very beautiful.

I just love her chin(s). I love when my babies get those little chins, I just love to stick my nose right in there and sniff, nuzzle and nibble on them.

Enjoy every minute of that sweet little beeb!

She's absolutely scrumptious looking! I tell my children they're so cute I could just eat them up. Heck, I even say it to the children of strangers. I never thought it was weird and never considered that others might perceive it as weird. Ooops.

Ha ha ha! I get it. I totally get it. She is EVER so cute.
