Should I Retreat Now?

I am nervous. Tomorrow Chup and I are leaving for San Juan Capistrano to a Couple's Retreat on the beach. What does that mean? Couple's Retreat? So far it means that we had to locate a place where our toddler could stay for six days so that we could focus on the couple part of Couple's Retreat. (Thanks Meg!)

I mean, it's not a therapeutic, licensed Couple's Retreat, it's more like our friend's grandparents own a beach house and four of us couples are going to stay in it together for the extended Labor Day weekend. Don't worry, we're all Mormon and so things probably won't get wild. Plus two of us are slinging babies. Then again, we are Mormon and the other two of us are ripe for the next baby. So what am I saying here?

What I am saying is, I've never shared a romantic vacation and a beach house with three other couples for six days. If this isn't good blogging material I am in the wrong profession. And I am nervous.

To ward off my midnight nervousness I'd like to tell you about how Chup and I went to meet Sam of Sammy's Cafe here in downtown Provo and how he named his veggie burger after me. Because something about me says "name food after me" it seems.

First of all we walked into the joint and met Sammy. As we were saying, "Nice to meet you!" the lovely girl with the pink shirt and hipster glasses said to me, "I read your blog!" And I said, "Awesome!" and then Sammy introduced me to three of his adopted brothers from Romania and the same girl overheard and said, "I went on a mission to Romania!" It's a small place. I mean, not Romania, Sammy's Cafe.

If that paragraph didn't make sense to you it might be because you aren't Mormon enough.

But it had me laughing all day.

Then Sammy insisted we try his pie shakes wherein they take a whole slice of pie and throw it into the blender with ice cream and the result is only slightly better than his cupcakes shakes wherein they take a whole cupcake and throw it into the blender with ice cream and the result is better than any other shake in this great state of Utah.

Then Sammy recommended the rest of lunch while we talked about dealing with rock stars, which is Sammy's job on the side.

And I could totally empathize because I deal with The Chief, and sometimes he is a rock star. Or a punk rocker? Probably a little of both. (But mostly punk).

Before we had to say our good byes, Sammy said to me, "We are opening a new cafe in Rexburg, Idaho and we'd like to name a burger after you," which is every girl's honor, so I picked the black bean veggie burger because veggie burgers will always be a big part of my existence.

My homegirl Mindy Gledhill is going to be headlining the Sammy's Cafe grand opening outdoor concert next weekend, I really wish I could go, but I will probably be recovering from the Couple's Retreat and all of that marital meditation and seaweed soul wraps I will be doing.

Anyway, if you are going please try the c jane veggie burger and think of me fondly?

p.s. Check out Mindy's new music video Anchor here!

Speaking of concerts, please come to our Rooftop Concert featuring Benton Paul on Sept. 10th 8:00/ watch this piece of video (no motorized couches, but yes, skipping):

I so wish I lived in Provo. I want to go to the free rooftop concert series and sit in a chair holding my very own "Ever".

Alas, I don't. And I don't have a guy that flips on screen and starts playing the guitar when I snap my fingers either...

What does that say about me?

I used to park on that rooftop when I worked at Central Bank 5-7 years ago. I miss Provo.

Have fun on your couples retreat. I'm going to Paris on Saturday.

I was just in Utah (dropping our son off for college *sniff*) otherwise I would so come to that roof-top concert--it sounds really fun! Enjoy your time in Cali--we've grown rather fond of it-- other than the earthquakes and fires it's a pretty cool place.

I love you! You always make me laugh! Your type says Sept. 11, but you kept saying the 10th. Its the 10th right?

We will be so happy to welcome you with open arms to SJC! May I suggest a few places to eat???

For Mexican: Olemendi's (right on PCH next to the houses I'm guessing you're staying at)
For Thai: Thai Mongkut on Del Mar street in San Clemente... Try the veggie lettuce wraps, holy heaven.
For Super Yumminess: The Ramos House by the Train Station in San Juan. Everything is good... everything. And the ambience is amazing (p.s. only open for lunch and weekend brunch.)
Sprinkles cupcakes, balboa bars, the yummiest donuts in the world... We've got it all.

Can't wait to see pics. Have the best time and I'll keep my eye out for you. :)

Mmm, I love me some Sammy's. Pie shakes and sweet potato fries are my fav, but I could definitely step out of my comfort zone to try a CJane burger!

Love the look of Sammy's.... Laughed so hard at the have-to-be-too-Mormon-to-understand-paragraph..... But my absolute favorite part was your backfliping dude!! And your face while said dude was backfliping. Genius.

Ahhh, you will love your couple's retreat. You'll be down the street from me and there is nothing more relaxing than spending time on a California beach. It helps that the area you are going to is extra beautiful.

Since we mormons like to tell about our mission connections I thought I'd let you know that Sammy himself was in my mission in Seattle.

On a side note you need to find a way to get Sammys to bring back the candy bar pie shake. They had it a couple years ago and then stopped making them. It's the best thing ever! My husband and I still crave it.

Courtney said...

oh yaay! i love sammys and i'll be in rexburg next week so i will definitely go to the grand opening of the new sammys! i am soo excited that they will finally have a good burger joint there!

Carrot Jello said...

uh...why is Mindy's song not on the radio?

Carrot Jello said...

"Why Carrot! She is on the radio!"
you might say
Yes, maybe in Zion she is, but in Seattle?
She is not.
I found her once in the thrift store, and I bought her, but then I gave her away because I had heard if you love something set it free...blah blah...
and she never came back, so I guess she never was really mine in the first place.
Oh well.
I'd buy that song off of ITunes.
Is it there?
Oh wait.
The moderator is reading these.
I forget I'm not really speaking to CJane.
Moderator, is "Anchor" on Itunes?
Never mind.
I'll go look.

Carrot Jello said...

I can't go to Sammy's in Rexburg. It would compete with my cousins Taco Time in Rexburg.
My heart belongs to Taco Time.
I'm sorry.

Carrot Jello said...

I don't ever really go to Rexburg anyway. I guess I could go to Sammy's in my head.
That wouldn't be competing.

Carrot Jello said...

It is! It is!

Natasha said...

Whoo-hoo! Have fun on your couple's retreat. I'll pass the Sammy's information on to my sister in Rexburg! It looks like a great place to eat.

have fun on your couples retreat! also, please sell Stephanie that her new family photos are gorgeous!

stacy said...

i'm so confused!! i know sams family and i was unaware that he had adopted brothers. hahaha! and maybe you know this already...but the ruth schultz that you featured on your other blog is sams sister-in-law. you probably knew that already though.

you are going to have the best time on your retreat. ALWAYS take advantage of time alone...even if there are other people and a little baby. it's good for the soul. :)

Umm all I can think about is the cupcake shake. Oh how I wish we had a Sammy's here in WI, preferably right down the street so I could drive there right now and get one of those. I am pretty sure it is all I am going to think about the rest of the day.

Wait, wait, wait... An article about Sammy's but no mention of the fact that Sam's brother is the co-creator of the best show in the WORLD, Yo Gabba Gabba?!

As a Mormon, I feel it is necessary to point that fact out, because the Mormon network is mighty, and it is awesome.

When I visited Austin, TX a few years ago there was a place that had cheesecake shakes, they were AMAZING! Pie and cupcake shakes sound lovely too! I wish I lived out there just for that... :)

Marianne said...

I love Sammy's! Their cupcake shakes are amazing! Never go at 9:00 on a Saturday night though. You'll have to stand in a REALLY long line! How so many bodys can squeeze into such a tiny place is beyond me The karaoke was goo though!

I love all of your Mindy videos so far and I am looking forward to buying her latest CD.

"I have a dude." That made me laugh so loud I woke the baby! Gotta love that.

Also, you are an hour from my cheery home in Burbank. If you need a place to change Ever's weekly stinky diaper, pay me a visit. Not that you know me...but maybe vicariously through Stephanie counts?

Have fun on the Couples' Retreat!
