Dear Wiggs (The Beholder) - Not at all offended. Thanks for asking. I know its probably intimidating, but questions are good. Understanding each other is important to any lifestyle! I just want to add my two cents in to answer. I think the best way to see how we view women is to read what we as members are taught by the authorities in the church via lds.org and general conference talks. Just search womanhood or something like that on lds.org and read up. That's the best way to learn about us, not necessarily what other people say. It's like sports. Don't ask a baseball player to explain football to ya. (No offense) And there is an identical system set up for the women called Visiting (not "Home") Teaching. We women visit too, and are visited by women!

Amen sista! I think people are too polite and say, "We're doing just fine!" I once asked my Visiting Teacher to pick me up some contact solution with money I gave her cause I ran out and would have been too blind to drive to get some myslef- thus blind with 3 kids all day. She was so grateful for finally being able to help someone and thanked ME for asking for help! "Mine eyes were opened." Ok- that was too much. But service saves the soul- in whatever the form.

I've got a question for you (and any readers out there): why are Home Teachers all men? I guess that's part of a greater question I have about the role of women in the LDS church. I've actually read quite a lot about the topic, so I know the general ideas, but I wonder how LDS gender roles play out in everyday life.

I'm absolutely in awe of the LDS church, so I hope my genuine curiosity doesn't offend. We honeymooned in St. George (where my grandparents live) and both the hubs and I kept saying that we hope to eventually be a part of a community as strong as the one your church fosters.

Anyway. That's a long comment. Maybe if you're ever suffering from writer's block you can address it. :)

Love that answer. I completely agree with you. Just wish I had the guts to say what I need. My VT'er called tonight & asked what I needed. I really wanted to ask her to bring dinner--it was an hour after our dinnertime & we had just gotten home from my father-in-laws funeral (at which we were fed lunch, but there was lots to do after). Plus we are drained in every possible way after this week. I chickened out & said I was fine (it was after all past time for making dinner). Why is it that I'm so willing to help others, but not to ask for help?
We lucked out, my SIL had 2 dinners brought to her & we got to go share. It was salvation to me!
My home teachers go by the 15 (or 20) minute rule & bring treats every month. Love them!

Back in my singles ward days, my home teachers visited only sporadically. One of those rare times, they asked me and my roommates the golden question ("Is there anything you need?")and I blurted "Milk." Thank goodness I was only semi-serious (dirt poor as I was, I really could have used some) because they just laughed nervously and didn't really ever come again.

My husband just got put in the Elders Quorum - I may have him mention the 15 minute rule at the next presidency meeting...

I moved into a new ward and I was very lonesome. I lamented (and murmured) about my far off friends in another state. I was in need of some TLC. Until my Visiting Teacher dropped off treats... every week for over a month. Then I felt accepted, cool, like I fit in. I am now, very happy and a little heavier for it! Bring on the Treats!

I always ask my HT to take out my trash. I live in an apartment and the Dumpster is a million miles away. He does it every time. Once he left without doing it and 2 minutes later he knocked on my door and asked to take it out. Best Home Teacher Ever.

And of course food saves souls. What's the first thing we do when someone is in need? We organize dinners for them.

Love the GQ response... Seriously, I HATE that question. If they really wanted to do something, perhaps they should ask, "Do you need your rain gutters cleaned out?" or, "Can we scrub your bathrooms for you before we pray?"

It was like the pre-marriage-and-still-dating question: "What you do want to do?" "I don't know, what do YOU want to do?" If a guy ever asked me, I'd say, "Dinner and a movie."

To the Home Teachers, from now on, I shall say, "Chocolate Twizzlers. My soul needs chocolate twizzlers."
